Counterspell Power Level

New 17 Nov 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 62 Comments

Given how strong answers and threats are in Standard is Counterspell / Mana Leak still considered too strong? Or is it just negative connotations from sins of the past?

Power level is not my forte.

Counterspell Draft Balance

New 06 Sep 2023 Asked by yuleooze 50 Comments

WOE feels fun to draft, Bargain plays well and feels pretty dynamic. I'd really like to see counterspells relegated to rare and mythic, losing to Cancel and Mana Leak variants for the x hundredth time is not fun or novel. Thanks in advance.

There are a significant amount of players for whom counterspells are an important part of limited. We try to strike a balance.

White's Counterspells Design

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by dracomoros 29 Comments

Is there much design space in white having counter spells that counter unless the opponent pays a cost (like mana leak and quench) to fit in with a taxing theme while letting blue have hard counters/counters with benefits?

It’s not a design space issue. It’s how much white counterspelling do we want.

Spell Colorshift

With the reveal of Reprieve, if or when? A colorshift of Mana Leak?

White can have that rules text. I’m not sure it gets it at that cost.

Counterspell Like Ward

New 20 Aug 2021 Asked by mythicos74 49 Comments

Ward is, IMO, a Hexproof that works better because it gives opponent the choice to circumvent it for a price. I have always thought that Counterspells, especially in matches where sideboarding isn't a thing, are too hard to play against. How do you feel about making Counterspell be like Ward by default and allow the counterspelled player to cancel the counterspell for a price (i.e. a little like Mana Leak)?

Counterspells have to be costed correctly, but do come with a real cost for the caster. You have to not do things to leave the mana open. I think having some conditional counterspells is good, but I also think the counterspell player should be able to depend on some of them. I think a mix is what creates the best overall gameplay.

White Colorshifted Mana Leak

New 25 Jul 2021 Asked by mysticleviathan 43 Comments

So can white get a colorshifted mana leak or spell pierce? or are those too efficient for white?

I’m not sure white’s spell taxing is going to be as efficient as the best taxing spell blue’s done historically.

Taxing Counterspells Concept

By taxing counterspells, do you mean something like Mana Leak?

Yes.

Mana Leak Usage

New 07 May 2020 Asked by wrath-of-the-moon 26 Comments

In response to tbjanowski's question. Mana leak was a 2 mana counterspell in standard awhile back with a caveat and it was run in pretty much every deck that played blue.

White Counterspell Limits

New 23 Jan 2020 Asked by atta-turk 34 Comments

Hi Mark! Curious about the space for a white counterspell... Could white get an unconditional counter effect if the set up was very difficult? Like if it could only be cast during combat and/or required you to have a creature?

No. It can delay (Memory Lapse) or tax (Mana Leak), and at a lower power than blue. That’s it.

Color Pie vs Power Level

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 29 Comments

"As a rule of thumb, if you can change numbers and make a color playable, it’s not a color pie issue, but a power level one." But white appears to be the only color where numbers dictate the color pie. Lightning Bolt, Mana Leak, Thoughtseize, and Path to Exile are four cards that are generally too good for Standard despite having in-color effects, but only Path is considered to be out of pie because of its efficiency.

Removal is treated a little differently as you don’t want colors overall being better than colors that are supposed to have stronger removal of a certain subset.

Counterspell Mechanics

New 27 Nov 2019 Asked by animatedscreenshots 34 Comments

What's the difference between Mana Leak-style counterspells and the Rhystic mechanic?

Mana Leak my opponent has to have it in their hand. Rhystic spells basically gives my opponent a Mana Leak every time I cast a spell with it. It’s the difference between your opponent doing something to you and you doing it to yourself.

White Mana Leak

Would a colour-shifted Mana Leak be in colour pie for White, or would that be too strong?

It might be too strong in blue.

Taxing in Blue

New 09 Aug 2019 Asked by reynoldsericd 34 Comments

How firmly is taxing in blue? I see a lot of blue effects that make spells cost more when they target blue's creatures, but otherwise taxing seems pretty sparse in the color. In the WAR DTW, you said Dovin's static ability was a bend in blue that was at least partially allowed because he's a hybrid card.

Blue is secondary to white. Blue also taxes quite often on counterspells with things like Mana Leak. White does it more, but blue has access to it.

Counterspell Mechanics

“It either counters a subset of cards or does something that doesn’t always work, such as making the opponent pay extra mana.” if Mana Leak were made today, would it (probably) cost nUU (where n=any integer)?

Taxing counterspells only need one blue mana as they are “soft” counterspells (aka it doesn’t always counter the spell).

White Mana Leak Potential

Since white can do taxing counterspells, could we ever see a white mana leak?

In theory.

Standard Cards Proposal

New 13 Mar 2017 Asked by mdbryan84 30 Comments

I want to thank you for taking time to answer questions and communicate with the players. So if we can't have lightning bolt back in standard, how would you feel about the following suite of cards (one for each color) being perpetually in standard: naturalize, mana leak, doom blade, lightning strike, and celestial flare?

The cards always being in flux is a core part of the game.

Powerful Counterspells

New 22 Dec 2016 Asked by bitterrootmtg 40 Comments

Having exactly one powerful counterspell in standard (e.g. mana leak, remand) would not allow a "draw-go" deck to exist (using your definition of "draw-go"). The deck wouldn't have the tools to counter most things its opponent does, just a few things. In light of this fact, why has it been years since we saw a powerful counterspell in standard?

One of the problems with having a game with fluctuation of power level, and being over twenty years old, is that players define “powerful” as the historic peak of an effect (rather than use the term to mean impactful in the environment it’s played in).Current Magic has done a lot of rebalancing of effects to create a more level playing field. Historical “powerful” cards are often hard to bring back, because they majorly warp the environment. That’s not to say we can never do it but it comes at a very high cost and thus isn’t something we can do very often.

Not a developer but my guy is most likely it’s too strong.

Power Level Adjustments

New 26 Sep 2016 Asked by shadesofpink 33 Comments

Spiritkhan is asking what you think standard/limited etc would be like if you hadn't dropped the power level of instants and sorceries (eg: no one cmc kill spells like Bolt or Path, scarce numbers of two cmc counterspells like Mana Leak or Deprive, and even fewer 2 cmc kill spells like Doom Blade etc etc etc)

I think it would be worse, which is why we did it.

Corrected Win Percentages

New 27 Feb 2016 Asked by tanisfahr 18 Comments

Not that it's a big deal, but you left off the win percentages for a few of the first round matches (Cryptic Command, Mana Drain, Remand).

Fixed it on my chart. Thanks. Cryptic Command beat Spell Pierce with 82%. Mana Drain beat Spellsputter Sprite with 75%. Remand beat Mana Leak with 54%.
