Planeswalker, Modern Horizons 3 Query

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 4 Comments

Why was there no traditional planeswalker in modern horizons 3?

Because we used the slots for the DFC cycle that players have been asking for since Magic Origins. The set only got five planeswalkers, so if we wanted a cycle, we needed them all.

Planeswalkers DFC Symbols

New 27 May 2024 Asked by tanknspank 10 Comments

Do you know why the planeswalkers in MH3 use the generic triangle symbol for DFCs instead of the one used in Magic Origins and M19?

I think we’re moving towards all DFCs using the triangles and not making unique symbols for different flavors of DFCs.

Arcades and Kaledesh Trivia

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 36 Comments

Maybe it got lost in the sea of questions, but could I get the coveted Birthday Trivia? About Arcades or about Kaledesh, as Arcades was my first commander, and Kaledesh was my first set!

Kaladesh, the plane, was originally created for Magic Origins because we needed to show Chandra’s home plane. We liked it so much we decided to make it a set and spent extra resources building it, so we’d be able to build on it a couple years later.Happy Belated Birthday!

Kaladesh Birthday Trivia

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by captain--wasabi 35 Comments

It was my birthday a couple days ago, may I ask for late trivia on Kaladesh?

Kaladesh was designed to be Chandra’s homeworld for Magic Origins. We liked it so much we decided to use it for an upcoming set.Happy Belated Birthday!

"I call it a travelogue set." -- Would Magic Origins count as that as well? A set that explicitly takes place on multiple planes.

Sure.

Whirler Rogue Trivia

New 23 Nov 2023 Asked by murmuringmystic 35 Comments

It's my birthday today! Do you have any trivia on my favorite card in all of Magic- Whirler Rogue? If not, can you talk about your favorite recent example of lenticular design?

When we were designing cards from Kaladesh in Magic Origins, we were walking a tightrope. We wanted to introduce Chandra’s home world in a way that felt complete (it was in blue and red), but also didn’t cause a problem when we visited the world two years later. I think we ended up in a good space with Whirler Rogue being a great example. Happy Birthday!

If there will be a Magic Origins 2 are the planeswalkers who lost their spark still on the table to be featured on it?

Sure.

Multi-Plane Set Possibility

Is it plausible that there will be a set based around more than one plane simultaneously that doesn't involve interplanar war?

Like Magic Origins?

Chandra Nalaar Trivia

New 28 May 2023 Asked by the--zubatman 42 Comments

Hello Mark. It's my birthday and I would like to ask for some trivia on my favorite character Chandra Nalaar.

Chandra’s homeworld was initially designed for Magic Origins, but we liked it so much we opted mid-design to make it the setting of an upcoming block. Happy Birthday!

Reverse Magic Origins

New 20 May 2023 Asked by aringa90 27 Comments

Hello Mark,I liked the theme of planeswalkers losing their sparks in Aftermath. Was there ever any thought about making “reverse” magic origins-style planeswalkers? (A planeswalker on the card front transforming into a creature on the card back)As far as we know, other planeswalkers are bound to lose their spark in the future, so Is that concept something Set Design might be interested to do?Thanks for reading!

We wanted to be consistent with how we did the desparked planeswalkers between sets, and not all sets have DFCs.

Future Set Focus

When/If, another set (Supplementary or Premiere) like Magic Origins that focuses on just a couple planes as opposed to 1 or all of them?

When.

Teasing New Worlds

New 07 May 2023 Asked by simsarwel 38 Comments

Hello Mark =), was the absence of a completly unknown plane in battle cards, hinting for a future expansion set, a deliberate choice? I know the design team loves to do that, recent Atraxa being a perfect example.

Yes. We talked about teasing a new world we were planning to go to, but March of the Machine was already a strain on the creative team, and that was dubbed too much extra work. We learned when previewing Kaladesh in Magic Origins, that it’s a huge amount of work.

Lorwyn Time Flow

New 03 Apr 2023 Asked by nakamagic 75 Comments

How quickly does time flow on Lorwyn/Shadowmoor? If normal, then it seems odd to have the Phryexian Invasion of Lorwyn when Lorwyn changed to Shadowmoor when Nissa was a child. Unless Nissa is over 1000 years old.

The world of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor has had its cosmology altered since Magic Origins.

One-Word Set Names

New 29 Jan 2023 Asked by noahdoestechthings 29 Comments

If/When a one word standard-legal set name that isn't the name of a plane? Was the most recent one technically magic origins?

If, because we like to convey what plane we’re on.

Pioneer Start Point

New 18 Jan 2023 Asked by themastah 39 Comments

Why did Pioneer start with Tarkir? Wouldn't Magic Origins have been a much more natural place to begin the format?

I wasn’t in on the decision, but I know those who are spent a lot of time on it.

Phyrexian Arc Pace

New 17 Jan 2023 Asked by petruscaex 45 Comments

Mark, if I may: I understand that this Phyrexian Arc actually started back in Scars of Mirrodin, just as the Bolas' Arc kinda started back in Shards of Alara, but the "ignition point" of the Bolas' Arc felt for me something around Magic Origins, which give us like 4 years of stories, while the ignition point of this Phyrexian contlict feels like Kaldheim but it had a pause until Kamigawa came out, which gives us like 1,5 years worth of stories. Maybe if we had like 2 years of development of this part of the arc things wouldn't feel that rushed.

The Phyrexian storyline has been subtly building for many years. Maybe it was a little too subtle.

Past Event Sets Possibility

New 12 Jan 2023 Asked by snoozyrobin 28 Comments

Is there a possibility for another set with a story set in the past/revisiting an event similar to the recent story of The Brother's War or Magic Origins from back in the day?

There is.

Planeswalker Origins Insight

New 22 Dec 2022 Asked by captainjackharness 75 Comments

If you did Magic Origins 2, are there any planeswalkers you'd personally like to dive into more? Living or dead, since they could be starting their journey here.

I have a soft spot for Kiora.

Possible Origins Set

New 10 Dec 2022 Asked by mollyjames 48 Comments

Could I request another Magic Origins type set? I really enjoyed having a Core set that set the stage for the characters and planes that were featured in the following years.

I do think there’s the possibility of another Magic Origin-like set, but it’s far more likely to be a normal premier set than a core set. Also, one could argue Magic Origin wasn’t quite a core set.
