Knight Errant

Elspeth's Summoning Choices

New 30 Mar 2023 Asked by stickypartyknighthuman-deactiva 40 Comments

Hi Mark! In MoM, one of the tribal themes with Knights. Elspeth is in this set. One of her previous cards is Elspeth, Knight Errant. Why does Elspeth summon Soldiers instead of Knights?

“Knights matter” is a component of a draft archetype (white/blue). Elspeth is an attempt at a constructed shot. Different elements aimed at different things.

Teyo's Naming History

Regarding Teyo's name, it should be noted that "Elspeth, Knight Errant" was Elspeth's first card and "Elspeth Tirel" came second.

A fine point.

Re: The "knight errant" story; do you think that was an isolated incident, or was there a lesson in card naming there?

There was definitely a lesson in card naming.

Focus Testing Frustrations

what has been the most frustrating thing you have seen during mtg focus testing?

We had a playtest with new players one time. They had an hour to learn how to play. They never learned because they spent forty-five minutes arguing over how to pronounce Knight Errant. Forty-five minutes! I think I had to be restrained because I was going to tell them after like twenty minutes.

Mishra's Toy Workshop Ruling

New 24 Oct 2015 Asked by zombie-illithid 21 Comments

One of your rulings on Mishra's Toy Workshop says (or at least implies) it can't be used to cast Cloudgoat Ranger, Elspeth, Knight Errant, and Doubling Season. Yet you implied in another ruling that it can be used to cast Myr Battlesphere. I don't understand the difference between casting Myr Battlesphere and Cloudgoat Ranger (they both create tokens with ETB, and only ETB). What is the difference?

Mishra’s Toy Factory can be used or any spell or effect that directly makes tokens. I’ve ruled that an “enter the battlefield” effect counts.

Elspeth Trivia

Can I get some birthday trivia on Elspeth, Knight Errant? (Or any elspeth)

Many people believe Elspeth has blonde hair (because traditionally light hair is tied to “good” and dark hair to “evil”) but she actually has brown hair. Happy Birthday!

Silver-Border Usage

New 17 Dec 2014 Asked by calintares 19 Comments

Silver-Border question: can you use Mishra's Toy Factory to cast Cloudgoat Ranger? how about Elspeth, Knight Errant?

Mishra’s Toy Workshop can only be used to cast spells and activate abilities that actively are making tokens. You cannot use it, for example, to cast a creature (let’s say Phelddagrif) that has the ability to make tokens. You could though use it on the activation that makes them. So, casting Raise the Alarm, yes. Casting Doubling Season, no.

What was the problem with Knight Errant? Were people pronouncing it Ka-nig-it?

Errant was the problem not Knight.

MaRo, you had me going with the New New World Order article all the way up to Knight Errant. Well played.

The funny thing is Knight Errant did cause us endless headaches in focus groups.
