Karn Liberated

Subgame Card Probability

New 04 Nov 2019 Asked by nayon7 41 Comments

What is the likelihood that a “subgame” effect like Shahrazad or Karn Liberated will ever get printed again? Separate answers for standard legal and supplementary product

Subgames are now silver border only due to tournament time constraint issues.

Subgame Rules

If I'm in a subgame from The Countdown is at One, and I ultimate a Karn Liberated, will the new subgame also start at 1 life? Would the winner of that game then be used for the Countdown resolution?

No, it would start at 20 because of Karn. Yes, that game determines the impact of the sub-game.

Existing Emblem Removal

In response to: "Would a Planeswalker ultimate that got rid of opponent's emblems ever be considered?" There is already a planeswalker ultimate that does this: Karn Liberated.

Fair enough.

Karn's Plane Transcendence

Did you ever consider having Karn Liberated be an Artifact Planeswalker?

We did. We decided that Planeswalkers transcend other card types and creature types.

Karn Liberated Exclusion

New 01 Aug 2016 Asked by shadesofpink 35 Comments

In From the Vault Lore, why wasn't Karn Liberated included? He just seemed like the perfect inclusion: His -3 ability refers to the Legacy Weapon, His Ult refers to his ability to time travel, AND he was one of the central figures in MANY of MTGs stories... The perfect combination of power and lore.

We only had fifteen slots and lots of choices to fill them.

Karn Ultimate Rules

If I ultimate Karn Liberated what, if anything, happens with a creature removed with AWOL? Also, if I start a new game after the last one ending normally, can I have my creature back then, please?

You do get them back of the game ends or starts over. So yes, Karn gets stuff back.

Hybrid Planeswalkers

So given that there have been more than a few supertype crossovers lately that were a bit unusual (like Enchantment Artifact, Enchantment Creature, and further back land creature), do you believe there is any design space for something like an Artifact Planeswalker or Enchantment Planeswalker? Granted, if you did believe so, Karn Liberated may have had an Artifact supertype, but let's imagine a future possibility, like Heliod or Erebos becoming a planeswalker.

The reason for not crossing them was mostly developmental. Once you start letting Planeswalkers be Artifacts or Enchantments, you open up a lot more potential abuses.

Karn's Pacifism

New 23 Jan 2015 Asked by kerrjf 51 Comments

Is Karn still famous for being a pacifist? If so, why then can Karn Liberated exile cards?

This is a Doug question. I’ll just note that exile doesn’t always mean kill. Look to Swords to Plowshared as an example where you remove their desire to fight not kill them.

Color Philosophy

New 28 Dec 2013 Asked by envoyofghosts 14 Comments

Why is "destroy target permanent" unacceptable in green but acceptable in brown? A monogreen deck can cast a Karn Liberated just as easily as it can cast a Desert Twister.

Some color definitions come from the inability to do something. A color philosophically being able to do something and a mono color deck of that color getting access to it are not the same thing. For example, green is not supposed to destroy creatures but I believe artifacts should have that ability. Yes, a green deck can use those artifacts but then green is forced to go outside of green to do it.

Doubling Season Interactions

New 27 Dec 2013 Asked by doortonothingness 13 Comments

For the record: Ajani Vengeant; Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver; Domri Rade; Gideon, Champion of Justice; Jace Beleren; Jace, the Mind Sculptor; Karn Liberated; Nissa Revane; Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded & Venser, the Sojourner can't ultimate immediately with Doubling Season out. Unless you have more than one :)

FYI.

Karn's Future Appearances

Will we see Karn again? Such a great character, I hope Karn Liberated wasn't the only time he'll be around!

I doubt we’ve seen the last of Karn.

Artifact Planeswalker Concept

New 01 Sep 2012 Asked by snikersnack-blog 2 Comments

Was there ever any thought to making Karn Liberated the first ever "Artifact Planeswalker" Type? I feel like it would have made a lot of sense.

Tezzeret would have been before him if we granted artifactness to planeswalkers. Partly for power level reasons and partly for flavor reasons we’ve decided that planeswalkers transcend things like artifactsness and creature subtypes.

Designers Behind Karn

New 18 Aug 2012 Asked by thesilvernoble 3 Comments

Hi Mark. The mechanic I'd like to see returned is the snow mechanic. My favorite block was the Ice Age block (including Coldsnap!). Being an old-timer, of course, Time Spiral is a close second. My question: Who designed Karn Liberated and Karn, Silver Golem? Karn holds a special place in my heart - my middle name is Karn.

I’m not sure who designed Karn Liberated. My best guess is Ken Nagle as it was his set. I designed Karn, Silver Golem. Also, I designed the character of Karn back when I was one of the two people in charge of the Weatherlight Saga.

Reanimating Planeswalkers

New 14 Aug 2012 Asked by stackweaver 13 Comments

Excluding Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and Sun Titan there are no cards that reanimate planeswalkers(as far as I know). Every other permanent type can be reanimated with effects ranging from Argivian Restoration and Replenish to Crucible of Worlds(and obviously Reanimate itself). I am wondering if a card that says "return target planeswalker card in your graveyard to the battlefield" could ever be printed. I mean ultimately is it really that much more broken than turn three Karn Liberated in Modern?

Why don’t planeswalkers have cards that let us avoid mana costs like every other permanent? Um, because we’ve gotten smarter.

Planeswalker Design Process

New 23 Mar 2012 Asked by fangfabio 2 Comments

Are planeswalkers designed by individual designers? Is there a planeswalker card you can say you designed? Also, who designed Karn Liberated?

Planeswalkers tend to go through many iterations so more people get their fingerprints on them. For example, I have had a hand in many planeswalkers but there isn’t one I feel was solely my design.
