All Will Be One Theme

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by marrinara-sauce 8 Comments

Did All Will Be One have a wedge theme at some point in design? It seems like the sets biggest mechanics all appear primarily in sets of wedge colors (WBG poison, URW artifacts, BGU proliferate, GUR oil counters)

Not specifically, but sometimes designs drift in certain directions.

Draft Themes in MH3

New 29 May 2024 Asked by trifas 32 Comments

Does every Wedge have a draft theme in MH3? Jeskai has Energy, Temur has Eldrazi and Abzan has Modified. I wonder if Sultai and Mardu have something too.

There’s connective tissue, but not a full named mechanical theme.

Color Shift Explanation

New 27 May 2024 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 1 Comments

So last week, iirc, you mentioned that today's making magic article explains why energy moved from temur into jeskai. But the article makes no mention of the color shift. Can you explain why it had to move colors?

I believe I said my podcast with Erik Lauer on the topic talks about it. That goes up this Friday. But maybe I misspoke and said my article.I’ll give you the short version. The set had to divvy up the core themes and Eldrazi worked better in green/blue/red as it wanted to have more ramping elements and wanted green more. Energy went into blue/red/white because it had more of an aggro component and played better in those colors.

Energy in Jeskai

New 13 May 2024 Asked by weebos 26 Comments

Is there a reason why MH3 seems to focus Energy in Jeskai when it was more Temur in Kaladesh? It's cool, but I was hoping to see more Green Energy cards.

I recorded a podcast with Erik Lauer on the vision design of Modern Horizons III and we touch upon that exact issue.

Evaluating Multi-colored Card Representations

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by lazcarno 26 Comments

"As I explained in the episode, it’s hard for every multicolor card to mechanically represent every color." I realize not every card needs to follow the rule, but that wasn't my question. My question was whether you would agree that this card doesn't follow the rule. That said, I did feel that since there were few actual multicolor cards in KTK, that you could have done better than this. Not every multicolor card needs to follow the rule, but was it so hard to make 4 rare Jeskai cards that did?

The card does not mechanically represent all three colors. It is quite hard to make elegant three-color cards that strongly hit all three colors.

Energy Deck Color Choice

New 28 Feb 2024 Asked by validtangent 18 Comments

Hello Mark! After reviewing the Modern Horizons III Commander Precons, I was curious how the energy deck ended up in Jeskai instead of say Temur, cutting green, a color with twice as many energy cards as white. Thanks for any insight you might have!

I assume it has to do with themes in Modern Horizons 3.

White's Inner Peace

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by kaptain-kota 43 Comments

You say internal peace isn't a White thing. How do you explain the Jeskai clan, or the card Inspired Ultimatum? Both seem to show how White can seek an inner peace. Also, I remember you talking about that as a White thing in both White Speaks and your White/Green podcasts.

If bringing everyone inner peace is part of a larger goal to creating group peace, that’s not beyond being a tool white could make use of. My point was finding your own personal happiness without it tying into the larger group happiness isn’t a core white thing.

Color Order Explanation

New 30 Jul 2023 Asked by woihtmmd 113 Comments

"They are in WUBRG order. Note that doesn’t mean W is always before U" Can you explain how this works? I'm confused.

Let’s start with allied color pairs. The way we do them is we start with the color and the go clockwise around the color wheel. That means they are: White/BlueBlue/BlackBlack/RedRed/GreenGreen/WhiteNote that means green and white are green/white, the order in which they are consecutive rather than the order of WUBRG. For enemy color pairs we get: White/BlackBlue/RedBlack/GreenRed/WhiteGreen/BlueIn this case two color pairs, red and white, and green and blue, are not in WUBRG order, but in the order where they are closest around the circle. This order makes it so each color is first two out of four times, and last two out of four times.Shard/arc three color trios are done the order that they appear together in the circle:White/Blue/BlackBlue/Black/RedBlack/Red/GreenRed/Green/WhiteGreen/White/BlueRed, green and white, and green, white, and blue aren’t in WUBRG order.Wedge three-color trios, are written such that the shared enemy color is in the center, with each color appearing with it as it appears when it’s written as an enemy color :White/Black/GreenBlue/Red/WhiteBlack/Green/BlueRed/White/BlackGreen/Blue/RedOnly white, black, green is in WUBRG order.Four color quartets appear in the order they appear consecutive in the color wheel: White/Blue/Black/RedBlue/Black/Red/GreenBlack/Red/Green/WhiteRed/Green/White/Blue Green/White/Blue/BlackAll but the first two aren’t in WUBRG order.Five color us in WUBRG order:White/Blue/Black/Red/Green

More Wedge Commanders

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by strix-soven 36 Comments

May I request more wedge commanders? There are nearly 2x as many shard as wedge. In case you're interested: Sultai 17, Temur 15, Jeskai 19, Abzan 12, Mardu 23. Wedge total 86. Esper 34, Grixis 39, Jund 28, Naya 30, Bant 29. Shard total 160.

We do them in about equal numbers. The discrepancy comes from the fact that we used to do a lot more of the ally combinations than the enemy ones.

ONE Set Color Themes

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by beastmasterftw 31 Comments

Hi Mark, I was looking at the ONE cards, and I noticed that a lot of the mechanics seem to fall into 3 color pairs, specifically the enemy color wedges (Temur has oil counters, Sultai has proliferate, Abzan has toxic, and Jeskai seems to have some artifact synergies). I was curious if this was intentional, and if it was, if it means that ONE was a wedge set at some point in design, or if this was a result of some other part of the way you design sets.

It was purposeful that certain themes show up in three colors, but it wasn’t because the set was ever a three-color set. It just lets us have some nuance with draft color pairs. For instance, white, black, and green are the toxic colors, so it lets us do three different draft archetypes that are each distinct from one another.

Urza in Standard Play

New 12 Jan 2023 Asked by themastah 33 Comments

Mana Symbols Order

Is there any specific colour order for the mana symbols in the CMC? Most Jeskai cards I've seen are ordered URW but some older cards I've seen are ordered RWU.

There is a set order. Wedge order permanently changed during Khans of Tarkir.

Narset Character Trivia

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by aork14 39 Comments

Hello Mark! For my birthday, I was wondering if you had any cool trivia about my favorite color combination (Jeskai), my favorite character (Narset), or my favorite card (Desperate Ravings)

Narset came about because we liked the idea of a character that in one timeline was a legendary creature of great renown, and in the other, a planeswalker. Happy Birthday!

Temur Wedge Insights

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by monorayjak 53 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my 22nd birthday. Can I have some trivia relating to my favorite wedge Temur? Also, if you don't mind asking a bonus personal question or two, what is your favorite three-color combo and triple color card? Feel free to ignore those last two, those are just me being curious. Thanks in advance Mark!

Temur plays into an aspect we don’t often see in blue, a quest for physical perfection. I don’t have a favorite trio. I personally am Jeskai (blue/red/white), if labeled as three colors. I’ll choose a card I just designed as my favorite three-color card. I’m really proud of it. : )

Mana Symbol Order

New 09 Nov 2022 Asked by notmakingablog71 83 Comments

Why do the mana symbols in some multicolored cards follow WUBRG but not others? i.e. an izzet card will have blue then red, but a golgari card has green first then black?

There is an order to every color combination: WUUBBRRGGWWBURBGRWGWWUBUBRBRGRGWGWUWBGURWBGURWBGURWUBRUBRGBRGWRGWUGWUBWUBRGThe order for each cycle has a pattern which goes around the mana circle in a particular way that is consistent for the cycle.

Jeskai Trivia Request

New 05 Oct 2022 Asked by smuglookingbarrel6 73 Comments

I finally get to invoke birthday trivia, so can I request some trivia about the Jeskai?

The challenge of the Jeskai was making them both spell and combat relevant. Those two things don’t tend to overlap a lot. When we found prowess, we knew we had our mechanic. We did try prowess for one playtest at +2/+2. Happy Birthday!
