Hecatomb Design Involvement

Did you have any involvement in the design of the late Hecatomb game?

I did not. I believe that was mostly Mike Elliott’s design.

Hecatomb's Color Alignment

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 20 Comments

Is Hecatomb still in color for Black due to the sacrifice cost or would it be more Red since thats where that effect has seemed to move or possible multicolor?

Black can still sacrifice creatures as a cost, no problem.

Mutate Inspiration

Was Mutate inspired by Hecatomb?

The game? No. It was us trying to capture the flavor of evolution. Champion was the most influential source.

Five-Sided Card Discussion

New 15 Jun 2023 Asked by aceofmoxes 50 Comments

WotC used to print a card game called Hecatomb with five-sided cards. Was there ever any discussion of using this technology in Magic?

What value would having five-sided cards add?

Hecatomb TCG Trivia

Do you have any trivia on the Hecatomb TCG Wizards made in 2005-2006?

I had nothing to do with it, so I don’t have a lot of trivia.

Mana Source Mechanic

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by fuddlesthegatekeeper 37 Comments

One thing i loved most about the game hecatomb was the ability to use a creature that had no chance of being played that game as a "mana source" instead, a decision made from hand. Have you guys considered bringing this mechanic to magic at all?

That mechanic is a core element of Duel Masters. Landcycling is similar although it obviously requires mana. I doubt we’d do free landcycling.

Hecatomb Game Discontinuation

New 03 Dec 2017 Asked by apocalypticvalraven 20 Comments

Related to the Dreamblade question- could you please find out what exactly was the cause of the Hecatomb game being discontinued? I loved that game, and was kind of bitter about the loss for a while, now I'm just sad.

With only a few rare exceptions, the reason games get discontinued is not enough people show an interest in buying it.

Forgotten TCG Recall

A Wizards TCG you forgot: Mike Elliot designed Uzumajin for your Japanese partner Takara-Tomy before leaving. It's a twist on Hecatomb, having square cards with transparent regions. Rather short-lived, but I still have my deck and it's a fun game. I love your Japanese games.

WotC Game Innovations

New 11 Jun 2016 Asked by jimharbor 46 Comments

Aside from Netrunner has wotc ever designed a card game not meant to "graduate" people to mtg?

Wizards has made all of the following trading card games: Netrunner, Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, Battletech, Star Wars, Harry Potter, MLB Showdown, NBA Showdown, The Simpsons, WCW Wrestling, Neopets, Codename: Kids Next Door, Dune, Hecatomb, Maple Story, and Duel Masters/Kaijudo. None but the last are connected to Magic in any way.

Not that I know of.

Hecatomb Game Trivia

New 03 May 2016 Asked by ironshade 38 Comments

Time for my shot at some Birthday Trivia! There is an Urban Legend of sorts that WotC once made an unreleased game called Hecatomb (not the MTG card) and that there was a crossover card for Yawgmoth made with art commissioned. Can I get some trivia about this (or a yea or nay on its validity)? And, if true, can you maybe see if that art is still in the recesses of some server somewhere and share it please?

Hecatomb was released. The game just didn’t last long. I’ll have to look into the Yawgmoth rumor as I didn’t work on the game. Happy Birthday!

Legacy Documents Request

New 20 Oct 2014 Asked by keiyakins 13 Comments

Could you pass along to the Appropriate People that it would be really nice for the DCI site to have a legacy documents page for no-longer-supported stuff like Hecatomb?

I will pass it along. I will note that it is going to have lower priority than getting the things the current games we produce need.
