Earl of Squirrel

Acorn Cards Integration

New 02 Sep 2023 Asked by relicmtg 50 Comments

I know that playing acorn cards with non-acorn cards together has always been an intention for you when designing acorn, so I wanted to let you know that my Commander playgroup has found a fun way to do that! We have a deck of 70 curated acorn cards that any player can pay 3 mana to reveal the top and play it for free. You might get something fairly weak like Extremely Slow Zombie, but you might also get something strong like Earl of Squirrel. Thought you might find our approach interesting!

Cool! Thanks for sharing.

Potential for Earl of Squirrel

New 28 Jan 2022 Asked by silverhawkpx45 27 Comments

Would Earl of Squirrel have been able to be printed as black border if he was first printed in Unfinity? I.e. is "squirrellink" too silly an ability name even if everything the card does works in black border rules?

It could work if written out, but we can’t _____link things in normal Magic.

Challenge of Implementing Squirrellink

New 08 Dec 2021 Asked by badatcommander 45 Comments

Is squirrellink really that hard to do in black border? Rapacious One was printed well before Earl of Squirrel and basically has Eldrazilink. Is the difficulty in making squirrellink work without a trigger?

We could write out what squirrelink does in black border. Making it a lifelink variant is where we get into trouble.

The Silver Border Consideration

New 28 Feb 2021 Asked by wunthyll 144 Comments

Was making Universe Beyond a silver border thing ever considered to reduce backlash from enfranchised players? I mean, Wizards had to have remembered the furor over the Walking Dead cards, but then the pure excitement over the Transformers and My Little Pony cards. It leaves the ability for people who love those IP's to still play the cards for fun, but keeps it out of tournaments. Heck, there could even be separate silver border tournaments and leagues, and it would open other IPs to be bolder.

Let’s explore the alternate universe where we gave these cards a silver border. We’re making a whole bunch of unique cards that work perfectly fine within the rules. These aren’t Un-cards where they’re pushing boundaries mechanically. These are cards that you could easily play if we let you. You have a deck where a certain card would work perfectly, but because it’s a different IP, it’s treated as “not real”. You have to bug your fellow players to use it, and if one person in your play group says no, it’s off limits. In this universe, I’m getting angry players upset that we made a bunch cool cards that “we don’t let you play”. How do I know this? Because I get messages all the time about Un-cards. When are we going to make Contraptions or host/augment or Earl of Squirrel in black border? That’s the flip of side of this issue. There are a lot of players who want to be able to play whatever cards they want to play and us artificially, in their minds, making a line is us fundamentally doing something we shouldn’t. The point here is we can’t win. Neither path we could have chosen will make everyone happy. (Kind of a truism in Magic design.) So, we picked the path that we think will make the most players happy. I also firmly believe that this issue, when the dust settles, is not going to be as world ending as it feels to some players right now. Why do I believe this? Because I’ve been here before. Many, many times. There are so many things we’ve chosen to do, that the initial response was “this is going to kill the game”. And it didn’t. In fact, with time those decisions become part of what people love about Magic. So yes, we did explore the path of a walled off subset of cards where you can only play them in certain formats, and we decided that that path, in the end, would make more players upset.

Silver Borders on Earl of Squirrel

New 18 Oct 2020 Asked by antimage7734 51 Comments

Is there anything about Earl of Squirrel's effects that have to be silver bordered? I'd love to see them show up on a couple other lords for underserved tribes.

The only thing keeping Earl of Squirrel silver border was Squirrels weren’t a black border thing when Unstable came out.

Silver Border Errata

New 14 Jan 2020 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 49 Comments

Earl of Squirrel was updated to being a Noble... but I find it funny, because in Silver Border World errata does not exist. What made Eli change it when there is no situation where it can count?

Errata exists in silver border.

Silver Bordered Cards

New 22 Aug 2019 Asked by morteos00 44 Comments

A number of silver bordered cards are used by my play group (there is a dice rolling deck and Earl of Squirrel is used in a Squirrel deck) what are your thoughts on silver bordered cards being mixed into regular modern for casual play?

I’m all for it. If your play group allows it, go for it!

Squirrel Cards Prospect

New 28 Jun 2019 Asked by quinton-the-hurricane-mccain 47 Comments

I've built a white/gree Squirrels & Elves EDH deck recently with Trostani, Selesnya's Voice as the commander. I was elated that Modern Horizons reprinted Squirrel Nest and had a few other Squirrel cards as well. However, in the future, for funsies I wanted to make a squirrel tribal deck, but there just aren't enough (commander legal, RIP Earl of Squirrel) squirrel cards to justify this. Could there be a potential for more new squirrels in the future or even a legendary squirrel?

If you want a Squirrel deck, you might need to be willing to use silver border cards. I’m hoping for more black-bordered Squirrel cards in the future, but even if successful, we’re a long way from a deckful of Squirrels.

Squirrel Title Fun

New 21 Jun 2019 Asked by meradric 20 Comments

Was 'Earl of Squirrel' named that primarily because the rhyme felt good, or was 'Duke of Squirrel' considered and maybe discarded because not enough people would get the song reference?

We came up with Earl of Squirrel and liked it. I don’t remember anyone suggesting Duke of Squirrel.

Earl of Squirrel Blackborder

New 26 Apr 2018 Asked by silmarillian-deactivated2018121 50 Comments

Could Earl of Squirrel exist in blackborder? If no, why not?

It couldn’t be a Squirrel or affect Squirrels as the creative team currently doesn’t want Squirrels in black border. The ability would also be written out and not made a lifelink variant. But other than that, yes it could be done mechanically in black border.

Silver Border Commander Rule

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by davbricar-blog 41 Comments

Would you support a silver border house rule that says "creatures with royalty titles in their name (like Earl of Squirrel) can be your commander"?

Silver border already requires buy-in from your play group. Ask them if you can use Earl of Squirrel as your Commander.

Silver Cards in Commander

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by mr-obliterator 108 Comments

While I appreciate your hard work on under you and I both know there is no normal place for silver border cards after we draft. Commander is the next greatest format for these silver cards and we don't understand why you'd rather pick 5 minites of fun having 4x earl of squirrel out rather than giving us a squirrel commander to help give life to squirrels hopefully pushing them to black border once again.

There are many Commander players. There are even more players who play what I call Casual, they play with the cards they own. We do a lot of things for Commander players, but we also do things for players of other formats. In this case, I leaned towards the Casual format rather than Commander. That’s how this a works. I have to strike a balance. It can’t always be your way.

Earl of Squirrel Wish

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by egyptcraze 59 Comments

why wasn't Earl of Squirrel legendary? my un-mander squirrel deck is sad! :(

It stacks. I wanted Squirrel decks to be able to have four of them on the battlefield. For regular readers this is another example of the tension with legendary permanents having downside text, it forces us to have to pick a side every tine we make a lord.
