Draft Boosters

Transition to Value Boosters

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by marlarkey01 12 Comments

Hey Mark, why was it decided to remove the draft and set the booster because of confusion amongst them, but putting value booster is better, is supposed to be a support for pauper/pauper commander?

You’re conflating two things that have nothing to do with one another. Draft boosters went away because the majority of the audience preferred set boosters. Play boosters were a way to keep the essence of set boosters while still providing limited play. All of that is mostly centered in local game stores. Value boosters are addressing a need of certain mass market stores to have Magic boosters at a lower price point. They are not a product the vast majority of enfranchised players will ever interact with, and their existence has nothing to do with organized play.

Introduction of Value Booster

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by anyguy 36 Comments

I really don't understand WotC sometimes, you take away the draft booster, because there are too many booster product lines, but now introduce the new "Value Booster", even though smaller, non-draftable boosters have proven to be unsuccessful wither aftermath. I really don't understand that logic.

The Value Booster is for a very narrow type of store. Most players will never see it.

Draft Boosters Removal Feedback

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by sickosickofruit 32 Comments

Hey Mark just wanted to say that the news about the new "value boosters" feels like a kick in the teeth as someone who has had to give up drafting as often as I used to enjoy because of the removal of draft boosters increase in costs (not to mention how that affected how limited plays). I'm all for having more afforable ways to interact with this game obviously, but when you tell me that I can't play draft at the price point I could afford before because they were too niche to sell then follow up by releasing a new niche pack type I can't help but feel betrayed. I love this game and I love how fun limited has been in recent years just wish something similar to draft boosters (which was already a budget version of our new play boosters) could have been a priority.

Not enough players wanted to buy the draft booster. That’s why it went away. It was nothing nefarious. We can only sell something that there’s a large enough market for.The value booster is an attempt to solve a completely different problem. There are a lot of stores that want a lower priced Magic booster option, so we’re experimenting with something for them. If there isn’t an audience for it, this too will go away. The two boosters are quite different from one another and serve very different audiences.

LGS Challenges with Boosters

New 18 May 2024 Asked by charble 31 Comments

Mark, today, my LGS of 24 years announced that it is closing at the end of the month because it can no longer run a profit because of Play Boosters. Since Limited was its primary revenue driver, the increased cost of running a draft, combined with the USD/CAD exchange rate and a weak economy, running the LGS became financially untenable. Charging more for draft wasn't an option. There are many similar LGS outside the US facing the same problem. Regular draft boosters served an important role.

The market was driving away draft boosters. Not enough people were buying them to justify their existence. Play boosters was us doing something to keep limited play from going away.

List vs Bonus Sheet

New 16 May 2024 Asked by godkingjinping 18 Comments

Is the list different from bonus sheet?

Yes. For example, the bonus sheet has a crime theme and shows up once per booster pack (draft boosters). The List doesn’t have a connective theme (it’s valued reprints reskinned to Thunder Junction) and shows up at a lower frequency than the bonus sheet.

Token Slot Complexity

New 06 May 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 15 Comments

About the suggestion of a second token slot being surprisingly complicated. There was a time when there was no token/ad/minigame slot in packs. How complicated was it when the pro tour player profile cards were added then turned into the ad/token slot?

Making a draft booster is a different animal than making a set booster. The play boosters are far closer to a set booster than a draft booster, so comparing it to old draft booster executions is comparing apples and oranges.

Play Booster Pricing

New 06 May 2024 Asked by theothin 25 Comments

For someone buying Play Boosters as a replacement for Set Boosters, the price of a booster has not changed. For someone buying Play Boosters as a replacement for Draft Boosters, the price of a booster has increased.

You are getting something for that price increase, more rares/mythic rares per dollar spent.

Booster Cost Concerns

New 05 May 2024 Asked by anyguy 10 Comments

More a note and I don't even know if there is a solution to my problem: I am a 100% limited player with a tight budget. With play boosters being more expensive then draft booster, due to budget, this just leads to me playing less. Also inflation is additional stress on my budget. I feel, that I'm getting less and less enfranchised and engaged because now I do less drafts. I fear loosing MTG as a hobby. I mostly play in my LGS and don't have a private playgroup, where we could play cheaper options like cube. I know WotC is a company and has to show growing revenue but it just sucks, that I may loose this great hobby and game because of monetary aspects.

I hear your frustration. The popularity of set boosters meant when we consolidated draft boosters and set boosters, they were crafted more to match set boosters. We essentially made set boosters draftable. I will note that the price of boosters didn’t go up. Play boosters cost the same as set boosters, and, like set boosters, you do get a higher amount of rares/mythic rares, on average, to match the higher price point. But yes, if all you do is draft, the individual drafts got more expensive. None of this change was done to somehow squeeze extra money out of people. We just took the most popular booster product and sold it at the same price, but with added value (more cards per booster and made it draftable).

Draft Guide Oversight

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 19 Comments

Opened a bundle for OTJ today, and noticed that it had a game card from Magic Core Set 21 explaining how to play Draft when the box contains Play boosters. Is this a slight oversight? I thought new product would include updated game cards explaining how to play with Play boosters instead of referring to Draft?

Whether or not you’re using Draft boosters or Play boosters, you’re still drafting or playing (booster) draft.

Sealed Play Boosters

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by hereforthenerdpolls 38 Comments

Any thoughts on play boosters for sealed play? I just had a really rough pool for OTJ. Trying to change up how I evaluate cards, but it ended up being hard to live the cowboy dream opening up only a handful of cards in one color and build arounds for different decks.

Draft boosters also occasionally had that problem with sealed play.

Play Boosters Explanation

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by msulentic-blog 43 Comments

Hi Mark, big fan here. Just wanted to say I do not enjoy the framing of Play boosters as "to save limited" I understand the context but the reality is that without limited ,magic as a whole would suffer probably catastrophically, hence the implication that limited was the weakest link is not fair.As a limited fan, I do not like reading those words and would like the framing to be less derogatory to my favorite format. Words matter; something like "We created them for the health of the entire game" would be easier to parse, and more accurate to be honest. If I come off combative, I apologize, I love the game, and I understand why the change was made; I just don't like reading the word limited in a precarious situation.

The writing was on the wall. The market wasn’t supporting draft boosters. We had, at best, a couple years before market forces drove them away. How was this possible? Well, the vast majority of Magic players don’t play limited.Play boosters’ whole existence came from a profound understanding by R&D of the importance of limited play. If anything, play boosters are a testament to how fundamental limited is to the game, not a knock of it.

Creature Power Discussion

New 04 Mar 2024 Asked by heavenlyevan 22 Comments

"The other major effect you can see on creatures is that the average size is going up, especially in white. In Draft Boosters, white's default average power was 2.95. In Play Boosters, that goes up to 3.28. That's around a third of a power greater. This is being done to ensure that every creature is playable, as lower-powered creatures can become more situational."Re: power vs mana cost. It also might be possible there's a creature power aspect of the set skeleton we weren't privy to?

I am referring to power as in power and toughness.

Boosters for Drafting

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by slapcastermage 34 Comments

The limited sets in the past 4 years have been unbelievable! I have been having an absolute blast, I have drafted them all! I was crushed to hear that draft boosters were going away. Why were draft boosters added, taken away, and replaced with play boosters? With the additional rare slot and less commons to fuse with the now obsolete set boosters, it feels like the push to make everything more profitable is creeping into limited play. Some things I like about limited 1) Each set is usually not impacted by must-have or oppressive commander or modern cards. 2) I like is that it's common centric. 3) I like that there is a lower frequency of rares. 4) low cost of entry, 15 bucks at my local lgs, 10 on Arena. In general, I am not happy about the limited booster changes but I will wait to try them.I am concerned that one day limited will be deemed "not profitable" and this golden age will end.

Play boosters are us ensuring that draft continues on. Draft boosters were selling so poorly, they were eventually going to be eliminated. We took steps to make sure you can keep drafting.

Drafting Boosters Test

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 30 Comments

Did Wizards ever test drafting Play and Draft boosters alongside each other, in a chaos draft environment? I know that probably wouldn't be a big concern, but I'm curious how that would play.

We have not tested that.

Play Booster Land Slot

New 15 Nov 2023 Asked by cmonasdf-blog 25 Comments

Play booster question: in LCI, draft boosters have a chance to contain a cave in the basic land slot. In upcoming sets that use play boosters, will some of those sets use the basic land slot for other lands like LCI, MOM, DGM, and FRF did?

It’s an option available.

Commander Precon Exclusivity

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by abxxxy 27 Comments

Sorry to repeat this question but I just want some clarification. Cards that are unique designs for a commander precon that releases alongside a premiere set (ex. Murders at Karlov Commander) will not appear in any boosters. This means that unique precon designs will only be accessible in their precon.

I believe that was always true. There were a handful of Commander-focused designs that appeared in set boosters, but not draft boosters. That’s what’s going away.

Draft Booster Feedback

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by thetitan555 45 Comments

The move away from draft boosters frustrates me more with the audience for Magic products than with the product itself. Magic has always been special to me because my experience with it was of making do with what you have: 'kitchen table' play. To see that when faced with the choice between "a unique way to play Magic and collect cards" and "collect cards", people chose the latter to the point that the market does not want the former... It makes me feel very alone in my impression of the game. I don't know. Maybe I'm unique in this.

The reality of the Magic audience is it’s very diverse and wants lots of different things. Juggling all those audiences is the biggest challenge of making Magic.

Limited Format Passion

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by ledlighton 28 Comments

Hello Mark,I appreciate that Limited seems to still be important to Wizards even when Draft boosters are in decline. Draft is nearly the only way me and my playgroup are playing Magic, as we think that this is the best way (for us) to experience the game.So thanks for making Draft live through this new type of booster, I hope the teams give the same passion into these new Limited environments as they gave to some of the last sets, who were some of the best Limited formats of all times.

We are.

Limited Format Importance

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by spudvatter 30 Comments

It’s really disheartening to hear so many people nonchalantly ask or suggest if Limited should be shelved. (I understand this was never WOTC plan). I get they may not like the Play Booster change, but to suggest eliminating the source of happiness for myself and others, it smacks of zero empathy from my community. I would ask those people to really think about how what they are advocating for impacts others. Do they really want to take away my whole experience to avoid a change to theirs?!

R&D (and Wizards as a whole) understand the importance of limited and all of our actions were insuring that it didn’t go away. We recognize there is a substantial audience that cares about it. As for the larger community, it’s true that a lot of people see Magic through the lens of how they play, and don’t truly grasp that what makes the game special to them is very different from what makes the game special to other players. My best guess is that some interpret draft boosters not be sustainable long term to there not being a big enough of an audience, which isn’t true, but I get how you could make that assumption. The market is weird in a lot of ways and can do things that aren’t necessarily logical if you don’t understand all the nuances of it.

Set Boosters Analysis

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by qanadhar 28 Comments

Hi Mark. Zendikar Rising came out in September 2020, in the heart of the pandemic when in person limited play was effectively non-existent and would be for nearly 2 more years. Did the analysts take that massive warping factor into consideration as to why Set Boosters outsold Draft Boosters?Seems like a pretty significant external factor to me.That said, I stopped buying draft boosters to crack and only play in-store, so have no need to acquire boxes for at home draft, so this change is no impact personally, but I think the pandemic may have skewed the data too much to support such a significant change.

The downward trend of draft boosters have gotten worse over time, not better. The data fights against this being a pandemic effect.
