Day of Judgment

All Creatures Fight/Bite Spell

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by braveswordwielder 5 Comments

A theoretical “all creatures fight/bite” spell seems like it’s going to be Day of Judgment (or at least Duneblast) in 99% of situations. Seems like it goes squarely into the “deathtouch + ETB fight” category to me, even if a functional template could be figured out.

It would probably be multicolored, if we did it.

Potential for Black Day of Judgment

If or When: A black Day of Judgment?

When if you mean a black card with the same rules text, if if you mean the same mana cost (but converted to black).

Color Pie Term Origin

New 15 Apr 2019 Asked by scrabblezard 30 Comments

The first use of the term "Color Pie" I could find was in your June 3, 2002 article "Day of Judgment", although the concept was mentioned in an earlier article by Randy Buehler: "Of Polls and Pies" on April 26, 2002

We were using the term before 2002 in R&D. That’s the earliest in print reference to it?

Card Name Spellings

New 15 Mar 2015 Asked by the-gods-have-spoken 28 Comments

Is there a reason that Day of Judgement is spelled Day of Judgment on the card? My computer autocorrected to the first option and confused the mass card order list. Another card with a weird grammar bit I noticed today was Resolute, Archangel. The comma is important, apparently.

Judgment is spelled without an “e”. See the Magic expansion for proof. Radiant is the archangel’s name thus the comma.

White's Card Advantage

New 16 Mar 2014 Asked by anaivecynic 21 Comments

For everyone asking about white card advantage, Day of Judgment IS white card advantage. White just doesn't gain card advantage off drawing, except for the occasional cantrip removal or cantrip d00d (and white's tend to be of the Wall of Omens variety).

Yes, white gets card advantage. All colors do. White is bad at card drawing.

Black Day of Judgment

New 03 Jan 2014 Asked by samyrius 29 Comments

Is a black Day of Judgment printable from a color pie standpoint? Everybody would love a Damnation reprint but I'm guessing it's unlikely to happen because of the regeneration clause...

Black is more than allowed to kill lots of creatures.

Damnation's Future

New 06 Dec 2012 Asked by ijskonijn 8 Comments

Any chance we might see Damnation or a black Day of Judgment in the (near) future? Or was that a one-time thing for Planar Chaos?

Black is king of creature kill so mass creature kill is in black’s part of the color pie.

Three Word Texts

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by dann0s 7 Comments

Do you share with me the simple pleasure of a card with only three words in it's text box? I've always preferred Day of Judgment (M12 version, at least) to Wrath of God because of the elegance of a large box with "Destroy all creatures." dead centre. Also, as a card goes it doesn't get much easier to grok than that!

I too enjoy a simple three word rules text.

DotP Encounter Design

New 24 Jun 2012 Asked by sunbyrne6 2 Comments

I'm loving DotP on the iPad, thanks for that. Back around Tempest, the legendary Aaron Forsythe built a deck that was all Muscle Slivers and Kindles. Some of the encounters really feel like that. (Especially the all-Bloodghast/Day of Judgment deck). Who designed the encounters?

The decks and encounters were built by Magic R&D mostly the developers.

Regeneration and Destroy

New 01 Jun 2012 Asked by khaemwaset-blog 5 Comments

A few days ago you said, "One of the major reasons we don’t use bury is that we don’t use “Destroy target creature. It cannot be regenerated.” much anymore." Is there a particular reason you're moving away from preventing regeneration with destroy effects, e.g. Wrath of God to Day of Judgment, Terror to Doom Blade? The biggest reason I can come up with is that it can limit interactions.

We found that it hosed regeneration for no particular reason. It also added more words to the cards and we’ve been on a campaign to reduce words where we can.

Dealing With Hexproof

New 05 May 2012 Asked by vicisaposer-deactivated20231123 6 Comments

Im not gonna give up on my question. "Were working years ahead" is not an excuse for making creatures immortal for people playing my colours (anything but blue). I can not deal with the hexproof angel that stops diabolic edicts. Its ruining my magic experience. I dont want to stop playing modern or t2 but im probably moving to cube until you guys fix up this mess.

Just off the top of my head. White has Day of Judgment style effects. Black has discard. Red has stealing effects (okay, you then have to sacrifice it). Green has fight. There are ways to deal with it in colors other than blue. We understand that hexproof + evasion is a potent combo so in the future we’ll be both having less of it and charging more for it.

Day of Judgment Insight

New 23 Mar 2012 Asked by fangfabio 1 Comments

Speaking of how white can have creature removal but at a price (have to make an exchange, or meet a condition, etc.), how Day of Judgment fits into white's color pie?

White also gets destroy everything of a certain card type. It can wipe the slate clean.
