Unique Creature Types

New 20 Jul 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 32 Comments

"Why were child and guest made creature types? They aren't really classes or occupations the way most other creature types are. Not all creature types have to be classes or occupations. They’re categories you can apply to creatures." Neither is Peasant, but we have lots of those. There's Cowards too.

Also Elder (in least in how we use it, to mean very old).

Norin the Wary Errata

Is there any demand to errata Norin the Wary so that he's now a coward?

It comes up from time to time.

Errata and Creature Types

New 20 Jul 2022 Asked by cheesedurian-deactivated2023010 22 Comments

When you errata creature types, you just add a new type. For example, "Dread Warlock" changed from "Human Wizard" to "Human Wizard Warlock". Does it follow that "Norin the Wary", if errated, would be "Human Warrior Coward"?

We try to be careful when we add words to cards that aren’t printed on them.

Defending Norin's Reputation

I just wanted to voice the opinion of myself and others that you didn’t blow it with Norin the Wary. He’s no coward, he’s a vigilant, rightfully wary survivor and we won’t let his good name be slandered. : )

The 'Coward' Missed Opportunity

Why isn't Norin the Wary a Coward? You had the perfect opportunity, and you blew it!

We did. I hold my head low.

Character Intimidation and Fear

New 10 Feb 2022 Asked by perhaps-a-tree 57 Comments

Meaning of the word aside, the art and flavor text clearly depict the traveler as fearful meaning scared, rather than frightening. He is shown running away from wolves and being called a coward. Additionally, the wolf on the backside (Fearsome Werewolf) is likely supposed to be a juxtaposition (fearful vs fearsome), so it seems unlikely the traveller was *also* supposed to be scary. No hate at all though Mark, I love your work and blogs. It is just reasonably interesting.

You’re correct. The implication of the creative is he’s afraid. I’ll admit that I didn’t look at the card when answering the first question, I just looked up the definition, so that’s on me. Why does he have menace? Mechanically, he’s a common and for simplicity we just wanted to change the creature’s stats. Flavorwise, my guess is he’s both afraid and intimidating. Those qualities can coexist.I do admit, it’s not doing the best job of reinforcing the menace.

Creature Errata Revisit Chances

New 08 Aug 2020 Asked by godsmack711 43 Comments

Hey there Mark, since you guys seemed to have changed your stance of late on creature errata (22 cards becoming nobles, 1 card become a warlock, 6 cards becoming sharks, 75 cards becoming dogs just since last year) what are the chances of you revisiting the errata of making Norin a Coward and making the creatures with proper names into legendary creatures (King Suleimon, Old Man of the Sea, Ali of Cairo, Frankenstein, Niall Silvain, Ali Baba, Abu Jafar, Aladdin)... It only seems fitting.

The former is a possibility. Making something legendary is adding a drawback and thus functional errata.

Future of Special Rules Text

Any chance we'll see the line "cowards can't block Warriors" or similar rules text again? It's always been my favourite to quote

It’s a possibility.

Timing and Creature Types

New 21 Jan 2020 Asked by meradric 38 Comments

When Time Spiral was done, where was Future Sight in development? Mostly, what happened to make Norin the Wary not be printed as a Human Coward, given Boldwyr Intimidator coming out two sets later?

It was just a case of bad timing, where Coward became a creature type too late for Norin.

Duel Decks Audience

New 04 Sep 2017 Asked by haroldforrest-blog 36 Comments

What's the intended audience for the Duel Decks!? I bought the Mind v Might pair intending to use it to introduce my friend to Magic... but both of the decks turned out to be really technically demanding (Suspend!? Warriors/Cowards!?), and so it made learning more difficult than it needed to be.

Planeswalker Packs are actually the preconstructed decks more designed for beginners.

Norin and Brago Trivia

New 03 Jun 2017 Asked by jjoossyy-stuff-blog 24 Comments

Hey Mark, my Birthday was a couple of days ago and I wanted to know of you had any trivia on Norin or Brago, thanks

I designed Norin in Time Spiral because he was one of my favorite characters from flavor text. The key to his design was that he was a coward that would never choose to get in harm’s way.Happy Belated Birthday!

Blue Color Preferences

New 07 Apr 2017 Asked by darkselia 43 Comments

I know is not a question but I see that there is a lot of people saying that blue is hard for new people. When I started to play I chose blue because it was my favorite color. I didn't see wich one is more easy. But for me it wasn't soo hard because I'm pretty coward and I liked the idea of responding to the others actions instead of be agresive and attack. And I liked using counters or returning permanents to heir hand when I was afraid to something. Now I can't imagine me without using blue.

Whenever I talk about data, I’m talking in conglomerate. The average new player is more likely to do thing X. That doesn’t mean none of them do thing Y, just less.

Coward Typeline Status

New 12 Oct 2015 Asked by jamessweet-mtg-blog 28 Comments

Um, I don't see any Cowards, not in the typeline. Only on the Intimidator's rulestext, but not as a printed type. Am I missing one?

You are not. The question is would we ever make one and I said Maybe. : )
