Champion of the Parish

Favorite Cards Trivia

New 11 Jun 2015 Asked by sovietbathtubfactory 23 Comments

It was my birthday a few days ago and I am very persistent! Do you have any trivia on one or both of my favorite cards: Champion of the Parish and Hamlet Captain?

Champion of the Parish was a tweak on a lord. Rather than make all of Humans bigger, they make him bigger. It was a neat way to get a larger White creature. Happy Belated Birthday!

Champion of the Parish

Finally the time to ask my birthday question has arrived. What can you tell me about my all time favorite creature Champion of the Parish??? Thank you soo much

One of the themes was tribal and we wanted the four monster tribes (spirits, werewolves, vampires & zombies) and the humans who served as the victim for the monsters. The strength of the humans was their ability to band together (and turn everyday objects into weapons). Champion of the Parish was created as a human tribal card development could push. Happy Birthday!

Game Mechanic Misinterpretation

Hey Maro, in your podcast, you said Champion of the Parish put a +1/+1 counter on a human when that human entered the battlefield. It actually puts the counter on itself when a human enters the battlefield

Oops. I’ll chalk it up to focusing on driving. : )

Norin Sisters Deck

New 19 Jul 2014 Asked by nobthehobbit 72 Comments

I don't know how much you look at deck lists, but it might hearten you to know that there's a deck in Modern that revolves around Norin the Wary. It's called Norin Sisters and it uses Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant (and sometimes Auriok Champion--the Sisters, from the Soul Sisters deck) to gain tons of life every end step, triggering Ajani's Pridemate and Champion of the Parish, and sometimes Genesis Chamber as well.

That does warm my heart. Go Norin!

Token Creature Types

New 26 May 2014 Asked by nvoitek 15 Comments

If Vanguard of Brimaz makes Cat Soldier tokens, then why Akroan Crusaders doesn't make Human Soldiers? That would made my Human/Battalion/Heroic deck so much more flavorfull... (+Champion of the Parish)

Token creatures have one creature type by default. We break that rule when the set in question has some tribal component (and sometimes just a card) in it.

Soldier Token Typology

So why are most cards still making Soldier tokens instead of Human Soldiers? I know in current standard it would probably rocket launch Champion of the Parish, but I still wonder why stick to race-less tokens as the norm.

Unless there is a special in-block reason such as Lorwyn’s race/class tribal themes, we only put one creature type on our tokens to help keep them simple and easier to reprint (perhaps we want to reprint the card in a future block without humans).

FNM Deck Approval

I thought you'd like this. My FNM this week was Block Constructed, a format I have never played. So I decided to go with a deck I thought I would enjoy: a Thatcher Revolt/Goldnight Commander combo with added Snapcaster Mage goodness to flashback Thatcher Revolt. I threw in some burn spells, some more humans (Champion of the Parish is go!), and called it a deck. It was really fun to play, and I did pretty well. Thatcher Revolt; not just a limited card!

Your deck has the official “Maro thumbs up” stamp.

DotP 2013 Strategy

New 22 Jun 2012 Asked by nullparallax 8 Comments

As a good marketing method to luring mundanes into the paper train, why does DotP 2013 start off by using illegal decks against the player? (A deck comprised of a few Archaeomancers and limitless Talrand's Invocations) N00bs will be coming to FNMs with decks built with 40x Champion of the Parish's and 20x Plains and not understanding that it's illegal, because they played against it in DotP 2013 etc.

What you are talking about our encounters. They’re a kind of puzzle and don’t represent a normal duel.

Thatcher Revolt Praise

Thatcher Revolt is absolutely amazing, yesterday I played a test deck with WR Humans, had a Champion of the Parish out, Goldnight Commander, and Thraben Doomsayer (in Fateful Hour), I played Thatcher (+3/+3 to everything, +3/+3 counters to Champion), then tapped Doomsayer, Cloudshifted him, then tapped Doomsayer again, +5/+5 to everything (Goldnight), +2/+2 (Doomsayer), and a ramped up Champ. I won in a single turn sitting at 1 health. Thank you so much! I love this card!

Me too.

Thatcher Revolt Combo

New 28 Apr 2012 Asked by miangeloshadow-blog 9 Comments

Thatchers revolt is a great card. If people cant see it just consider this Champion of the parish + Unruly mob, when thatcher comes in Champ gets a +3/+3 and at the end of the turn Mob gets a +3/+3.

The reason Thatcher Revolt rocks is because Thatcher Revolt with so many cards in Avacyn Restored is something awesome.
