Party Crasher Limitations

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 15 Comments

If my opponent is invited into another game by better than one, can I attack with my party crasher during their combat phase in THAT game? They is my opponent after all.

No, Party Crasher can only attack in the game they’re in.

Skipping Turns Mechanics

If I have to skip my next turn because of coronatog or something and then get roped into another game by better than one, can I skip my turn in that game instead?

No.

Skip Turns Rule

New 18 Dec 2023 Asked by heavenlyevan 25 Comments

In a draft game recently someone played "Eater of Days" and let the etb resolve to have themselves skip their next two turns. They then cast "Better Than One" (they actually cast it multiple times but it isn't relevant to the actual ruling) to add a teammate onto the game. Would the teammate's turns be skipped as well? They didn't exist when the skip next two turns trigger happened.

They would because the core is the player who skipped turns.

Unstable vs Unfinity

New 12 Mar 2023 Asked by armeizh 59 Comments

Hi Mark, yesterday we drafted a stashed box of Unstable. It involved "As Luck Would Have It" as high as 61 counters; a Five-Fingers Discount on Rules Lawyer to turn a game around and win at a negative life total; round 1 getting overtime because one player had to play two games at once due to Better Than One; and a player without a board state topdecking Over My Dead Bodies for a massive attack that left the opponent just one life short of lethal, fitting for a horror villain's last lunge. All in all a good time for everyone, and for what it's worth it confirmed that I liked Unstable more than Unfinity. Contraptions play better than stickers, and the "silly themes" feel more scattered in Unfinity, which makes the draft a bit more daunting as it's harder to get a feel for whether your deck will "get there" in terms of playability. The puns and flavour and individual cards are still solid, though! I just enjoy Unstable more.

I think Attractions are the closer thing to compare Contraptions to. Which you prefer depends on how much you enjoy planning ahead. Contraptions are Spike-ier and Attractions are Timmy/Tammy-ier.I’m glad you enjoy Unstable. I spent a lot of time on that too, and am always happy to hear people enjoying it. Stickers ended up being more polarizing than I expected. Part of it was logistical issues that we didn’t have a lot of control over.

Leyline's Initial Turn

New 25 Jul 2019 Asked by mouse-wife 34 Comments

Hi Mark! I have a silver border rules question. If I cast Better Than One and give my new teammate a hand with a Leyline in it can they put it onto the battlefield for free with the Leyline’s ability?

No. It needs to be the first turn of the game not of their involvement in the game.

White's Card Advantage

New 04 Nov 2018 Asked by chrisgodinho 32 Comments

White can’t get card draw, but can it get some form of card advantage that isn’t technically “draw”, like red’s “impulsive draw”? Maybe if it’s connected to creatures in some way?

White gets board sweepers and other removal that’s better than one-for one.

Silver Border Gameplay

New 28 Jun 2018 Asked by lytrx-blog 22 Comments

Hi Mark! Silver border question. If a player casted Better Than One in a kerfuffle game, how do you divide up the command zone?

However you like. You can give your Commander to the new head’s command zone (assuming it’s in your command zone).

Universal Game Scenario

New 29 Mar 2018 Asked by darkdever0-blog 58 Comments

If someone copied Better than One 7.5 billion times, targeting everyone on earth, wouldn't that mean that everyone has played a game of magic?

You can’t do “outside assistance” on someone be who doesn’t agree to be involved.

Unrulings on Better Than One

New 23 Feb 2018 Asked by nate-fiendblooded 28 Comments

Hey Mark on account of my son being born, could I get some unrulings on "Better Than One"? If a player gets knocked out of a multiplayer game with 3 players left are they considered 'outside of the game' and a legal target for the card?

Yes. You can ask for assistance from someone no longer in the game.

Inspiration for Better Than One

New 01 Jan 2018 Asked by sircaelum-deactivated20190608 28 Comments

I was going through the original Great Designer Search when I realized something. Alexis Janson submitted a card called "Getting a Head" for the silver bordered design challenge. This is where Better Than One came from right?

Correct.

Teammate 'Owner' Status

New 14 Dec 2017 Asked by trigunnerblog 24 Comments

If I got a teammate with Better than One and they have to shuffle cards into their library or get a card returned to their owner's hand, do they go into my library or my teammate's library? In other words: Is my teammate considered owner of the cards I gave to them for that game?

They are the “owner” for the duration of their time as an extra head.

Team Sizes in Unstable

New 11 Dec 2017 Asked by lavalot 22 Comments

Had lots of fun with unstable Mark, good job. Now, better than one, is there any limit to the size of a team you can have? Also if you already have a teammate does your new teammate become the teammate of your old teammate as well?

You can have as many heads as you gave copies of the spell cast. Note that only the head casting the new Better Than One splits their stuff with the newest head.

Unstable Game Fun

New 09 Dec 2017 Asked by codenamejd 26 Comments

Unstable is SO MUCH FUN! Tonight I got pulled in to a game with a Better Than One, and my teammate had The Grand Calcutron - so I got to draw a bunch of cards straight away, including his Griselda. My teammate decked out but I managed to get him a draw. I then faced him in round 3, and cast Five-Finger Discount on Griselda. So in two different rounds I got to cast the same person's Griselda - after having drafted WU. Thank you for this set!

You’re welcome. I love hearing all the Unstable stories.

Teammate Game Participation

New 04 Dec 2017 Asked by stoovanoworld-blog 20 Comments

Does your teammate for better than one have to be out of any game of magic or is it specifically your game?

They can be in another game if that game is willing to pause while they play in your game.

Subreddit Popularity

Hey Mark, just thought you should know that the Hangman and Better Than One spoilers are two of the highest-upvoted posts ever on the Magic subreddit. Cheers!

That’s great to hear.

Sharing Contraptions

New 26 Nov 2017 Asked by mr-good-wine 10 Comments

Casting Better than One, can I share my contraption deck and contraptions? If so would they be considered assembled?

You can share both cards from your Contraption deck and assembled Contraptions which are considered assembled. You can’t change what sprocket they are in though.

Teammate Selection

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by sartoriusoftheabyss 64 Comments

If I'm playing in New Zealand, can I choose the Whanganui River to be my teammate with Better than One? If I'm in Argentina, can I choose an orangutan? They're legally persons there. And what about in the USA, where corporations are legal persons? Could I choose Hasbro as my teammate?

The person has to agree which all those things are invariable of doing. Okay, maybe if the Orangutan knows sign language.

Changing Card Names

New 23 Nov 2017 Asked by gman-003 34 Comments

Can I use More or Less to change a card's name? Say, "Gimme Five" to "Gimme Four", or "Better than One" to "Better than Two"? "The Countdown Is At Two"? "Four-Headed Goblin"? I have no idea why anyone would want to do this, since it doesn't change the rules text in any way, but I'm sure I'll find a crazy exploit somehow.

You can and it does matter; there are numerous silver-bordered cards that care about qualities of the name.

Card Ownership Twist

New 22 Nov 2017 Asked by qwar-zach-blog 12 Comments

(according to the FAQ) So I act of treason a creature my opponent controls, then cast Better than one and give that creature to my teammate. They own it now? put it in their hand/graveyard/deck when appropriate? "Just remember that for purposes of the game, your new teammate becomes the owner of those cards."

It doesn’t lose the connection to its original owner. When the effect wears off they get it back.

Kindslaver Advice Rules

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by magic-undertale 18 Comments

I cast Better Than One, then activate Kindslaver. Can my teammate advise the controlling person? In a multiplayer game, can my other opponents advise that person?

No. No one playing in the game may advise.
