Well Done

Underworld Dreams Reprint

New 26 Jan 2020 Asked by tqmurdock 54 Comments

Wow underworld dreams was a reprint? Well done. Fits so well that was a surprise. Love it when that happens.

It’s not just a reprint, but an *old* reprint. It was originally in Legends, released in the summer of 1994. It was also once on the banned and restricted list.

Theros Set Features

New 13 Dec 2019 Asked by quantumcat2002 29 Comments

Set looks awesome so far. A while back you asked what returning things people wanted from Theros and I said constellation, devotion and an eidolon of blossom like card and you delivered all of that. Well done

You’re welcome. : )

Infect vs Wither

New 09 Nov 2019 Asked by public-domain-books 54 Comments

In terms of flavour, Infect was really well done, but I find that in terms of gameplay I much prefer Wither. I seem to recall you like infect a lot, but it feels like overkill to me. I guess I don’t really have a question, but if you have the time to share a quick thought on the subject I’d be interested to hear what your thoughts are on the two.

I think Infect and Wither both belong in the game. While similar, they actual lead to very different decks.

Alternate Appreciation Methods

Mark, I want to send my thanks for everyone's hard work on Throne of Eldraine, but I'm worries about your hands. So you could please chest bump or knock heads with everyone involved to say job well done? You know, for the well-being of your hands.

“Why’d you head butt me?!”“Good work!”

Artistic Risks in Hushbringer

New 20 Sep 2019 Asked by silpheed-tandy 55 Comments

i have longtime wished that Magic art would take more risks, like they did in Ye Olde Days. well, i LOVE Hushbringer's art for how unnerving and surreal it feels. it also seems like the community is even more polarized about it than they were about poison, so well done!

As regular readers of me know, they key to good design is making things that someone will love not just making things no one will hate.

Praise for Elegant Designs

New 29 May 2019 Asked by vergilius314 36 Comments

Modern Horizons is just packed with incredibly elegant designs. Twisted Reflection and Throes of Chaos stand out in this regard among the most recent cards you've shown us, but the whole set has beautiful designs. Well done to the whole design team!

The set us as Mel friendly as it is Vorthos friendly.

Praising Japanese Translations

New 24 Apr 2019 Asked by dodyshiratori-blog 64 Comments

Hey Mark, I'm a professional English to Japanese translator and looking at the Japanese War of the Spark cards, the translations seem particularly inspired and well done. Could you pass on a "good job" to the Japanese translators for me?

Will do.

Praise for WAR Storyline

New 21 Apr 2019 Asked by greatglasslynx 48 Comments

Just want to say that I’ve been playing for a long time, and I think the WAR storyline is far and away the best I’ve ever seen in Magic. It’s astonishingly good: characters, themes, story beats. All of it. So well done!

Thank you.

Trailer Compliment

New 31 Mar 2019 Asked by tsuyoshikentsu 133 Comments

The trailer made me cry. Excellent storytelling with zero dialogue. EXCELLENT use of music. Well done. (High five to whoever picked the song. For someone my age, it’s the perfect choice.)

Definitely watch the War of the Spark trailer if you haven’t yet.

Kudos for Khans Block

New 17 Mar 2019 Asked by bossanova87 73 Comments

Can you give some high fives to the team that put together the Khans block? Looking back on it now, I really have a new found appreciation for how well designed and implemented that whole story was. You guys were able to do "time travel" again in a unique way, that didn't also completely break the game. I found it so amazing how detailed each unique Legendary character had their own set of changes based on the change in a world without and then with Dragons! So very cool, and well done! Thanks!

Some of us are still in the building, so I’ll high five them.

GRN Prerelease Success

New 29 Sep 2018 Asked by sircaelum-deactivated20190608 26 Comments

Mark! MARK! Please distribute many high fives for GRN. Every single person at my Prerelease had a blast, and everyone in my group got to play exactly what they wanted! Very well done.

High fives shall be delivered.

Core 2019 Praise

New 29 Jul 2018 Asked by kvanever 62 Comments

Don’t listen to the hate. Core 2019 is a really solid set. The MTGO Draft metagame is still evolving and the games are really interesting and skill testing with a lot of decisions. It’s a really well done and elegant set. I think its biggest weakness is having to follow Dominaria, which was a Limited masterpiece.

I’m getting a lot of compliments on Core 2019. It’s the usual “by addressing the cynics, I make the public seem cynical on Blogatog” issue.

Legendary Creature Design

New 14 Jul 2018 Asked by rahasya 37 Comments

Is it sometimes hard to make legendaries in special subtypes like bear? I feel like you guys did a great job with Ish-Kanah as a spider commander. Even though Goreclaw isn't directly tribal, it feels very bearish, and I think it's a job well done.

We can’t always make everyone happy as they don’t all want the same thing.

Proud Parent Moment

I’m super proud. : )

Appreciation and Impact

New 08 Jun 2018 Asked by joshbegerow 49 Comments

Give yourself a high five today if you haven't. You have done so much for magic which does so much for all of us for example my son and I bonded pretty close over playing magic. Your passion, innovation, and communication with the players has really made magic what an awesome entity it is today. Job well done I imagine having a legacy like that must feel pretty amazing

High five delivered and thanks for the kind words.

Dominaria Family Introduction

New 21 May 2018 Asked by poaceaetor 60 Comments

I've wanted for years to get my spouse and kids interested in Magic. The combination of Dominaria's story and set design have finally done it. My family has loved meeting the characters, and it makes them excited when they open a card they recognize from the story, whether it's a mythic like Teferi or a common like Caligo Skin-Witch. The crossover of story and game play is so well done -- my thanks to the many folks who made it happen! I'm looking forward to more of it in Ravnica :)

I’m happy to hear you’ve brought you family into the game. : ) I think they’re going to enjoy what we have planned.

Two-Headed Giant Praise

New 23 Apr 2018 Asked by greatglasslynx 33 Comments

I’ve been playing Magic for a long time, and I tried a two-headed giant prerelease for the first time yesterday. It was a blast! I’d recommend it to anyone. Oh - and Dominaria is exactly what I hoped it would be. Well done!

Two-Headed Giant is a great way to play cooperatively with a friend. It’s also a great way to teach a new player.

Midnight Pre-release Kudos

New 21 Apr 2018 Asked by sundsted 29 Comments

I just got back from a midnight pre-release and I went 3-1 in my favorite colors. Simic! Dominaria has a lot of neat cards and I won't ask you to distribute any high fives since you must get a ton of those requests. For me the set, the flavor, and the design made my night so kudos to the team for job well done!

I will accept the kudos on behalf of the whole team.

Artwork Appreciation

New 27 Mar 2018 Asked by somethingyetgrows-deactivated20 56 Comments

Personally, I liked the way phyrexian scriptures looked but a lot of my play group didn't, however after seeing history of benalia, everyone in my play group loves the way they look. Stunning art and a nice frame. Very well done

Thank you. James, our graphic designer, did amazing work.

Card Design Compliments

New 24 Mar 2018 Asked by kabimur88-blog 34 Comments

Well done with the line between rules text and flavor text! I thought that this would look as ugly as before, but whoever designed it did really well. Can you distribute high fives to those who deserve it?

Can do!
