Surprise Party

Crossovers Opinion Evolution

New 28 Oct 2023 Asked by strix-soven 208 Comments

I just saw a collection of 7 screenshots from 2011 thru 2018 from this blog where you repeatedly shoot down the idea of doing mtg crossovers. You said "We think it's important that Magic is one cohesive game, and not a hodge podge of different things." This hurts to hear because it's verbatim sentiment that has been expressed to you about UB which you shot down as unreasonable, and you never addressed the contradiction. I know things change, but how can we trust what you say to us here?

I’ve never said anyone’s feelings are unreasonable. People can and should feel justified believing whatever they want. My goal on this blog is to share with you my best sense of where Magic design is at that moment. Often Magic moves in directions I can’t predict. If you asked me ten years ago, as many people actually did, I wouldn’t have predicted Universes Beyond. But now that I’m knee deep in it, and I’ve seen a lot of data based on the ones we’ve released, I’m a convert. I believe it is something that will bring lots of happiness to Magic players. For example, I was in a playtest for a Marvel set the other day and it was one of the most fun playtests I’ve had in years. I’m a huge fan of Marvel, and, obviously, a giant fan of Magic, so bringing those two loves together is quite joyful. It really hammered home to me the power of Universes Beyond. Trust is a thing to be earned, and I’ve worked hard for twenty-eight years to form a trust with the players. I’ve never lied to you, but I have said things that I didn’t think would happen that did. Saying something not knowing the future isn’t lying. I 100% believed the thing I said when I said it. Also, I always stress that I couch future talk with the mindset that I don’t use my future knowledge. If I know we’re doing thing X next month, I’ll act as if I didn’t know that when asked about it, because it’s important for me to not ruin the surprise of what’s to come. This is much more like not telling someone they’re having a surprise party than straight up lying, but yes, whatever you want to call it, me not ruining future surprises is something I do regularly on this blog, and I’m totally transparent that I do it.

Unstable Draft Fun

New 09 Oct 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 39 Comments

I drafted Unstable last night, and it was some of the most fun with Magic I’ve had in a while. My opponent round 1 was a good friend; they cast Photo Op to get Enter the Dungeon. While I’m that subgame, I cast Tug of War to start another. Later, I helped someone hide a Clown Robot token for the Surprise Party that I passed them. Can you distribute the highest of fives to the design team?

Will do. : )

Unfinity Rules Queries

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by scarlettstrings 18 Comments

Hey Mark! We had a blast last night playing with our Unfinity commander decks, really love the set :D We had a couple eules questions come up, which might be important in future games. Does Devil K. Nevil have to stay on the table for his jump to be successful? And the other is with Surprise Party, do you have to hide the tokens under things already on the battlefield or can you sneak them into sleeves of cards in your hand before you play the cards as long as you aren't caught?

Devil K. Nevil has to clear the line of creatures, but doesn’t have to land on the table, although he gets style points for it. You can’t hide the Robots in things before you play them. You have to hide them after things are on the battlefield.

Draft Joy and Applause

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by rebel-ryan 25 Comments

This draft was the most fun I've had playing hands-down, including the time I got passed 2 approach of the second suns in Strixhaven. It's amazing to me that the things that I thought would be fun to do were also the most powerful cards. In my pool, I got to run surprise party, Greatest show in the Multiverse, Standard Procedure, and Carnival Barker.I have never had an entire room applaud for me before today.

Surprise Party Strategy

New 07 Oct 2022 Asked by 22bebo 28 Comments

Mark, how do you suggest we utilize Surprise Party in draft? Do I only get the clown tokens I open? Am I allowed to ask other players for their clown tokens? Should I not give away my clown tokens if someone asks for them, out of fear of being surprised? If someone wheels a suspiciously large cake onto the battlefield, should I fear for my life total?

You can ask other players for tokens.

Unfinity Clown Tokens

Question about a card from Unfinity: Would you be allowed to stick Clown tokens in your card sleeves and count that as "hiding" for Surprise Party?

No. They can be hidden under the cards on the battlefield, but they can’t be in your deck.

The token need to be the full token.

Surprise Party Tokens

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by noahdoestechthings 42 Comments

To answer the Surprise Party question, there are four shapeshifter tokens with changeling. One of which is a 3/2 that comes from Black Market Connections.

Surprise party requires using actual, official, Magic-printed Robot Clown tokens, but Changeling tokens do fit those requirements.

Clown Robot Tokens

Surprise Party asks you to use "printed Clown Robot tokens". This refers to the creature types on the tokens, so can I use Shapeshifter tokens with changeling?

Does that exist as a printed token?

Favorite Birthday Present

New 12 May 2020 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 154 Comments

Mark Today is My Birthday!!! My favorite set is Kamigawa and My favorite charcter is Toshiro Umezawa and my favorite Creature type is Rat. But honestly I know everything about those 3 subjects. So the real Birthday trivia I want is, What is the best Birthday Present you ever got Mark?

For my 30th birthday, Lora (my then girlfriend/now wife), threw me a surprise party. It was a very nice party with catered food and a DJ. It was a wonderful party, but I didn’t know how she was able to afford it. I later found out she ate nothing but Raman noodles for six weeks to save up the money. That’s the first time I realized how serious she was about our relationship. Seven months later, I proposed to her.EDIT: A little additional information to add some more context. There was a place she could have gotten the money - me. I would have easily given her the money. I had it to give. But asking me meant it couldn’t be a surprise party and she knew how much I would enjoy having a surprise party. So, there was a much easier path she could have taken to get to a party, at let’s say a 70% rate, but she did what she did because she wanted to give me the best party even if it made things much harder for her.
