Sliver Queen

Sliver Queen's Class Identification

New 02 May 2024 Asked by exalted-boda 48 Comments

Why isn’t Sliver Queen a Noble? 🧐

The term “Queen” mirrors the phrase “queen bee” to signify that she birthed the Slivers (at least the ones on Rath), not that she’s a noble in charge of politically overseeing them.

Birthday Sliver Trivia

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by rwssr 41 Comments

Hey Mark, it’s my birthday! Can I please get a birthday trivia factoid on either Sliver Overlord or Sliver Gravemother!!?

Sliver Queen had been pretty popular. Legions brought back Slivers, so we thought it would be cool to do another five-color legendary Sliver in Scourge. We picked two abilities we thought would be useful. The tutor ability so you could go get the Sliver you needed in the moment, and the steal ability to help in Sliver on Sliver matches.Happy Birthday!

Slivers Home Plane

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by xansor 68 Comments

If/when: basing a new set or new product on the sliver home plane where sliver queen was taken from or the plane sliver gravemother lives where they have overthrown a faction that had tried to domesticated them?

I believe the Slivers home plane is a when.

Reserved List Dilemma

New 19 Sep 2022 Asked by rwssr 67 Comments

Would/Could WotC make a card on the Reserved List legal for Standard. Like for example, doing Slivers in a premiere set and announcing Sliver Queen is legal for that set and Standard in general?

Making a card Standard-legal, but not more available, does not seem like a recipe for success.

Five-Color Card Trivia

New 12 Jul 2022 Asked by trifas 53 Comments

Hi, Mark! Another birthday around here. Could you share any trivia on my first commander, Scion of the Ur-Dragon, or any 5 color card?

The first five-color card, Sliver Queen, came about because we wanted a card that tied all the Slivers together, and they were all five colors, so it seemed fun and splashy to make the Sliver Queen five color. We made her legendary because Michael and I put her into the story. Happy Birthday!

Sapience Requirement for Gaining Sparks

New 03 Mar 2022 Asked by hitek1208 31 Comments

You said it's possible to get a spark, but I thought only sentient things could get a spark. Are slivers sentiment enough, or would one have to gain enough sentience to then gain a spark (and then go through the process of igniting it). I know karn had a "talk" with the queen back in the weatherlight saga, so maybe...

The Sliver Queen was for sure sapient, so Slivers are capable of sapience. I’m not sure if the drones are less so though.

Reprinting the Sliver Queen

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by jimi099 41 Comments

Will you ever reprint the Sliver Queen? I have the original and I feel iffy about putting her in a deck.... the Overlord was reprinted but never the queen...

We can’t. It’s on the Reserved List.

Is it possible to print art cards for reserve list cards such as Black Lotus, Sliver Queen, etc.?

That is a very interesting question.

Trivia on Legendary Slivers

New 17 Apr 2020 Asked by rwssr 42 Comments

Can I get a birthday trivia factoid about any of the 5 legendary Slivers?

The Sliver Queen was made purely as a mechanical execution. We made her legendary because she felt legendary, so Michael Ryan and I worked her into the story. Happy Birthday!

Sliver Queen's Role

Are sliver queens like bee queens in that they sometimes set out to start their own hive?

The Sliver Queen makes Slivers. We’ve only ever met the one.

Slivers' Hive Mind

New 05 Nov 2019 Asked by extreme-office-narcisist-blog 33 Comments

What level of hive mind do slivers have? Are they sapient or are only the leaders sapient? Do they have free will? If so, do they lose it while hooked up to the hive mind?

Most of the slivers aren’t sapient, but the Sliver Queen was.

Sliver Queen Printer

"Our printer to print our playtest cards is called Sliver Queen." as a massive Sliver fan i just gotta know if there's a story behind this. you opened this up MaRo, now ya gotta share the why of it.

I think it’s because the Sliver Queen spits out a lot of Slivers just as the printer spits out a lot of cards.

Sliver Planeswalker Possibility

New 24 Mar 2019 Asked by betuman 34 Comments

Regarding the sliver pw, couldn’t we have a sliver queen become a planeswalker? I mean, storywise, this breed of sliver could be sapient.

It is possible yes.

Intelligent Slivers Concept

New 23 Mar 2019 Asked by per-mariam-ad-jesum 25 Comments

Artificial creatures can’t hold Sparks, but can non-sapient animals? I was under the impression that Slivers weren’t intelligent, but people sure do love talking about a hypothetical Sliver planeswalker.

The Sliver Queen was intelligent, so some Slivers are, just not most of them.

Slivers in Supplemental Sets

New 15 Feb 2019 Asked by 64m3-0v3r 31 Comments

Could we have slivers in a non-standard set, like Commander? My sliver Queen deck need some help Mark! 😂

Slivers could show up in a supplemental set.

Early Creature Types

New 21 Jun 2018 Asked by lazcarno 55 Comments

Here's something I've always wondered about. Way back in the day, creatures ("Summon" cards) only ever had one subtype, including Legend; to the point that Sliver Queen needed rules text saying it counted as a Sliver. Why, then, did the original Elder Dragons get not one but two additional creature types? Why did they get to be "Elder Dragon Legends," but Sliver Queen couldn't say "Sliver Legend?" As the lead designer of Tempest I'm hoping you'll know this. ;)

Early Magic had a rule of one creature type. That felt Elder Dragons Legends was cool enough to break the rule. I pushed very hard to break the one creature type rule and was part of the team that convinced everyone to start race class.

5-Color Design Trivia

New 15 Jan 2017 Asked by combatdonut 43 Comments

Mark, it's my birthday! And this is my first ask on blogatog. Could I get some trivia on 5-color design?

The first five-color card I was ever associated with was Sliver Queen in Stronghold. We wanted to make a Sliver lord and Slivers were all five colors, so making her five-colored seemed like the only right choice. I worked her into the story and she and Karn had a touching scene (she was guarding the Legacy and Karn talked her into letting him have it).Happy Birthday!
