Searing Spear

Magic Slang Over Generations

New 17 May 2021 Asked by ruhruhrandy 54 Comments

I was listening to Strixhaven with Ari earlier and he referred to “3 damage to any target” as Searing Spear instead of Lightning Bolt. Do people do something like this often to you? It really made me feel old. (No offense to Ari I’m sure he’s a wonderful guy)

Magic slang does vary based on how long you’ve been playing. I’ve just accepted that I’m old.

Card Reprinting Logic

New 16 Oct 2017 Asked by jhoslayer 39 Comments

What's the design reasoning behind reprinting lightning strike over searing spear? Both seem generic enough.

Two issues: 1) Which is a better fit for the creative?
2) Will having two different copies of the same card (allowing eight to be played) cause a developmental problem in any format?

Core Set Contents

New 26 Mar 2017 Asked by ihaveakramp 29 Comments

Yesterday you asked what parts of the core set we would like to see return, here's my answer. I would like a simple box set which contains playsets of 5-10 utility cards which are not in standard-legal block sets. Here's an example for a BFZ-SOI-KLD-AHK Set: Relic of Progenitus, Hero's Downfall, Dissolve, Searing Spear, Pacifism and Arbor elf. None of these cards fit with the feel of the worlds we are currently visiting, but would improve standard by adding a little graveyard hate and removal.

Graveyard hate missing is not because of the lack of a core set.

Card Naming Convention

New 19 Aug 2016 Asked by soapiecakes-blog 22 Comments

I'm sure the window has passed now given all the "name a card" cards, but was it ever talked about to have names not be markers of unique cards? So you could do things like reprint Inquisition of Kozilek under a name that fits the plane it's being reprinted on, but have it count as the same card for deckbuilding, etc, or not have issues with stuff like searing spear/lightning strike because they'd be the same card?

There’s no easy way to make the names not the markers. I don’t expect it to change anytime soon.

Card Descriptors Idea

New 06 Nov 2014 Asked by inspired-kettchup 45 Comments

D&D spells have descriptors like "fire" or "death" or "evil" or whatever to categorize them and distinguish them. If the Magic card face had enough space, would you use descriptors on Instants and Sorceries the way permanents have subtypes, so they could be easily grouped? (Searing Spear and Lightning Strike would be slightly functionally different then; maybe young pyromancer cares more about the spear.) Or do you think it would add too much complexity?

If we started over, I’d be tempted to make more flavorful supertypes.

Lightning Strike Decision

New 04 Oct 2014 Asked by sofacoin 15 Comments

Let's reverse "Why Lightning Strike": If you'd thought of Lightning Strike before m13, would you have used it instead of Searing Spear?

Remember that the change in particular happen after we were committed to art that didn’t match the old name.

Card Naming Strategy

New 04 Oct 2014 Asked by lseths 30 Comments

In regards to names for cards, you said "It’s one of our most limited resources. Note we are careful about when we use a simple name." Then why do you keep wasting names on functional reprints? Why not reprint Searing Spear instead of wasting the name Lightning Strike? Why not reprint Inspiration instead of making Weave Fate? I can understand for something like Counsel of the Soratami becoming Divination due to it being plane-specific, but why do these re-names if names are so valuable?

Usually when we use a good name on a card that’s similar, one of two this is going on. One, we slightly changed the card mechanically and that’s what we want to be reprinting in the future (example: Weave Fate) or two, it’s a general enough effect that we know we’ll use often, so we make a slightly different creative take to allow us some choice to adapt to the world it in future reprints (example: Lightning Strike).

Lightning Strike Reprint

New 14 Jun 2014 Asked by amcrocker 50 Comments

What purpose does reprinting Lightning Strike serve? Its already in standard and will be for same length of time as M15. If red needed a decent burn for limited why not reprint Searing Spear or create a new burn spell. It seems rather lazy.

My new theory is people just don’t like Lighting Strike because every time we print it, I get angry mail. : )

Theros Lightning Appreciation

New 02 Apr 2014 Asked by write-in-stone 20 Comments

The more we see of Theros worldbuilding and learn about Keranos in particular, the happier I am that Lightning Strike exists as it is, instead of being Searing Spear, as many fans (including me) wished it had been when Theros was first spoiled and came out. Lightning Strike keeps getting cooler the deeper we get into Theros!

I’m glad some of you are coming around. : )

Signs of Success

New 07 Oct 2013 Asked by eyeball-frog 26 Comments

Is it a sign you've done something right if people can't agree on what to complain about.

It is. I know Theros was doing well when the biggest complaint was about Lightning Strike not being Searing Spear.

Unusual Complaints

New 05 Oct 2013 Asked by chimeneamtg 41 Comments

"I get complaints about everything. And I mean everything" What was the complaint that surprised you the most, that we don't already know? (so no Searing Spear, Return to Kamigawa, etc)

No matter what we do, no matter how popular, someone doesn’t like it and as the most visible spokesperson, they often tell me. The craziest ones are always someone asking for something that if put up to a vote wouldn’t generate 1%. For example, I got a complaint about how they hate it that with premium cards you sometimes get two rares in a single booster.

From the Vaults Idea

New 02 Oct 2013 Asked by alexcm4297-blog-deactivated2021 25 Comments

Many times, From the Vaults are full of high dollar crazy rares (and yes there are exceptions). Could we possibly see a From the Vaults with only commons and uncommons that are popular and highly liked, for example, Doom Blade, Oblivion Ring, Searing Spear, and Fiendslayer Paladin

“This is not the supplemental product you are looking for.” While we could do something like you are suggesting, it wouldn’t be From the Vault.

Elemental Spells' Flexibility

New 27 Sep 2013 Asked by dearmarkrosewater 5 Comments

The re-skinning of Searing Spear got me thinking: Was there ever an attempt to distinguish the elements by making fire spells sorceries and lightning instants?

No, different worlds and different planeswalkers call for different elements and thus we need them to exist in both instant and sorcery versions.

Design for Formats

New 27 Sep 2013 Asked by import-os 6 Comments

Do you take in to account other formats when making new sets, such as gods as commanders, or adding a new searing spear to modern. And do you think about how one deck color (Esper for example) controls better/worse than another (Bant as another example) and which control types have more/less utility? (If you can't tell I'm a control player)

We keep in mind other formats and definitely make cards with them in mind but we do not prevent ourselves from making cards that could warp things outside of Standard if we feel they are good for Limited/Standard. Those formats all have the ability to ban things if cards are a problem for that format in particular.

Card Design Timing

New 24 Sep 2013 Asked by tsumiband-blog 7 Comments

@naming Searing Spear/Lightning Strike/etc. IIRC you've said before that sometimes in R&D when it comes to designing blocks the two teams don't necessarily communicate - but there is oversight for *Standard* right? So this is a kerfuffle that could have caught during the inception of both sets. They see a Standard season with two functionally identical cards; they talk to design heads, point it out, manage the namespace. I assume this is a thing that already happens, is it not? If not, why not?

We did not know what the Theros card would be when Magic 2013 was being done. Heck, we didn’t know what it was going to be when the art of Theros was being done.

Unexpected Questions

New 24 Sep 2013 Asked by chemicalchemical 23 Comments

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you did not expect to be answering so many questions about Searing Spear.

If you had asked what the hot topic the week after the prerelease, I would not have guessed Lightning Strike.

Heroic Design Space

New 24 Sep 2013 Asked by thirstydragon 9 Comments

I really don't mind lightning strike. The card is the same as searing spear, which just means it's a solid common. The art is great and the flavor is solid. It also allows for another searing spear for future core sets, to maintain variety while keeping an equal balance point. Functional reprints happen all the time. As an actual question do you think heroic had enough design space to exist outside of theros or do you imagine it'll be mostly covered after Nyx?

Ask me at the end of the block.

Addressing Complaints

New 24 Sep 2013 Asked by miracle-falcon 23 Comments

Not to say that you don't take our grievances seriously, but I think this lightning strike/searing spear thing is the most responsive we've seen you to a problem we've had - asking multiple questions about why, giving us lots of information about what went into the decision, and looking up further details and coming back to tell us what you learned. Has there really been that much of an outcry?

Believe it or not, it’s the number one complaint I’ve had about Theros. Which, by the way, is a great sign for Theros. If that’s the biggest issue, things are good.

Lightning Strike Decision

New 24 Sep 2013 Asked by victorsantmaker 8 Comments

Couldn't Lightning Stike be anthing else other than a functional reprint of Searing Spear? Maybe 3 damage sorcery speed, or 3 damage to players, 2 damage to creatures. 2 damage with upsides.... There is a lot of things that it could do and it just feel 'meh' to be a functional reprint from something that just left standard

Late in development, the developers don’t like using things they haven’t been well played and understood. (Many of development’s biggest mistakes came from trying something new late in the process.) The card had to match the art for Lightning Strike and had to be a repeat that was good enough that it would see tournament play. There were not a lot of options.

Searing Spear Replacement

New 24 Sep 2013 Asked by moone513 33 Comments

I for one am totally fine with getting a new, more fitting version of Searing Spear. It seems like a simple enough effect that we can afford to have multiples.

Okay, so I went and got more info about how Lightning Strike got its name. The spell was originally a different spell, had the name Lightning Strike and the art had been commisioned. It needed to change and the development team wanted a simple spell that they already understood as it was later in development. This meant it could not be Searing Spear as the art was not a searing spear.  I’m not sure this information will end this debate, but hopefully it explains a little better how and why the decision was made.
