Baron Von Count Inspiration

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by nitrabant 32 Comments

Hi Mark, do you have any trivia about what or who inspired "Baron Von Count" in Unstable?

We were doing resonant villain tropes, and the over-the-top mad scientist with grand villainous plans was one of them.

Creature Type Choices

New 01 Nov 2023 Asked by llanowarminotaur 38 Comments

The recently previewed Intrepid Paleontologist has Druid as its creature type. How does this fit in with the discussion about using the Scientist type on appropriate worlds? Was the decision that while "Paleontologist" is Ixalan-appropriate, "Scientist" is not? Or was the Druid type locked in before Scientist was available (and if so, how did the contemporaneous Jurassic Park cards have access to the type)?

It can take a while for the use of a creature type to get wider use because we work on a lot of products simultaneously.

Scientist Beeble Scale

Where is Scientist on the Beeble scale?

I’d call it a 5. I think we’ll use it where appropriate.

Scientist Type Appreciation

New 25 Oct 2023 Asked by mrtitanic 58 Comments

Not sure if you knew this, but my mentor Dr. Charles Pellegrino's scientific research inspired Michael Crichton to write the Jurassic Park novel. Dr. Crichton credited him in the book. Seeing "Scientist" as a type reminds me of him, and as a scientist myself, I hope there will be more of them, including Oceanographers, Meteorologists, Geologists, etc. Even magical worlds must feature science.

Scientist is now a creature type we can use in the appropriate sets.

UB Sets Influence

New 20 Oct 2023 Asked by glovealike 26 Comments

With so many scientists, robots and firearms in UB sets, are chances to get these in non-UB sets higher than before?

Creature types from Universe Beyond sets are available to appropriate in-multiverse sets.

Nardoe's Typeline Limit

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 27 Comments

Hi Mark!Could it be possible that Nardoe isn't a Cyborg because "Legendary Artifact Creature - Cyborg Scientist" doesn't fit on the typeline?

That is quite possible.

Scientists in Innistrad

New 24 Sep 2023 Asked by missmoo77 37 Comments

Re: Scientists Is Innistrad considered too high fantasy for these cases? Or do you mean you're using it in more strictly no magic settings like in Universes Beyond? I figure that Innistrad would be a good place for a lot of errata if they were to happen as there are quite a bit of blue "wizards" that could be a flavor hit under Scientist instead. But I can also understand if Scientist may be more like Time Lord were it's saved for specific instances in no magic settings.

Scientist will be used in environments where the characters would be referred to as scientists.

Scientist Subtype Introduction

New 23 Sep 2023 Asked by missmoo77 40 Comments

I'm so excited about all the stuff revealed in the MagicCon Las Vegas 2023 panel! A specific question with Ian Malcolm being revealed, is Scientist going to be an official creature subtype? And if so should we expect errata for other cards (like say Laboratory Maniac)?

We are using by it going forward, but I don’t know if we’re using errata on anything. Note it’s used in more modern settings. More high fantasy settings will still use things like Wizard.

Tamiyo Theme Birthday

I'd like to invoke the rite of Birthday trivia! Could I get some trivia on Nashi or Tamiyo please?

Tamiyo is a scientist who studies moons. She went to Innistrad because it has a really strange moon. Happy Birthday!

Persistence in Science

New 27 May 2023 Asked by tqmurdock 34 Comments

Happy belated birthday Mark. Something that has really helped me is your stories about how you have had to be persistent to get things done that you knew were good for the game but others couldn’t see. I find myself in a similar spot as a climate scientist and your stories remind me to be confident in my intuition and dedicated to figuring out how to explain what seems obvious to me in a way others on the team will resonate with.

Ant-Man's Color Identity

New 10 Feb 2023 Asked by j-waffles 38 Comments

You said ant-man was green/blue. Would you mind elaborating? Hank Pym, the inventor of the suit and the first ant man, was certainly UG. But what about Scott Lang, Pym’s successor and the ant-man we see in the MCU? He’s not a scientist, he’s a thief. All of that makes him seem more black than blue.

I was answering for the comics. Both Hank Pym and Scott Lang from the comics are green/blue. The MCU version of Scott is more red and less blue.

Genesis of Unstable's Mad Science

New 30 Aug 2021 Asked by teaxch 42 Comments

Did the idea of doing a mad science world for Unstable come from wanting to do Host/Augment, or did Host/Augment come out of trying to do a mad science mechanic? Or was it just two things you wanted to do that happened to work well together?

Mad scientist world came first.

Color Pie's Sacrifice Characteristics

New 16 Aug 2020 Asked by kheadhoro 42 Comments

Hi, I would like to make use of my birthday question voucher! But rather than trivia, could I ask you about the color pie? Specifically: is the characteristic of sacrificing ones health to achieve ones goals in Blacks slice of the pie, as it is a form of "greatness at any cost" or is it really depending on the goal you want to reach? For example, would a scientist who drowns themselves in their work to the point of health problems be blue or black/blue or something else entirely? Thanks!

All colors can do that depending on the reason. A white character, for example, might sacrifice their health if their work is for the greater good.
