Remove Soul

Appreciation for 'Unsanctioned' Game Format

New 16 May 2020 Asked by calamitouscube 39 Comments

I LOVE UNSANCTIONED! Especially Flavor Judge (aka Vorthos's UnCard) since I invented a Format like it during Onslaught! I felt that Remove Soul shouldn't counter Soulless One, Akroma's Vengeance shouldn't destroy her or Ixidor, Lay Waste shouldn't destroy Wasteland, etc. You can choose to play Flavor(or flip a coin)before any game. You all must agree on something making sense(Like Borborygmos wielding Chariot Of Victory as a fist weapon)or it happens normally. Try it, all my play groups love it!

Happy to hear that.

Rules Interpretation Issue

New 20 Aug 2018 Asked by suggested-name-nick 33 Comments

I had an argument with a friend. He believed that R&D's secret lair prevents you from tapping basics as they have no text. However he also believed that he could cast his player reward Remove Soul to counter my Llanowar Elves. Who is right?

Basic lands being able to tap for color is baked into their rules and definition. R&D Secret Lair doesn’t stop that.

Flavour Analysis

Mark, I'd like to report a flavour fail. Dauntless Bodyguard has power 2 or less, so it's still daunted by e.g. Steel Leaf Champions!

And you can Remove Soul Soulless One. : )

Flavor vs Gameplay

New 19 Aug 2015 Asked by gonzoron 47 Comments

Shouldn't sip of Hemlock give a poison counter instead of life loss? : )

Shouldn’t Remove Soul fail to counter Soulless One? : ) Better gameplay means that flavor isn’t always 100%.

Pacifism Logic

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that a creature enchanted with Pacifism can still Fight?

You can also Remove Soul a Soulless One.

Soulless Card Interaction

New 11 Apr 2015 Asked by kandykidzero 33 Comments

If I cast a Soul Summons and the top card of my library turns out to be a Soulless One, what happens?

The same thing that happens when you Remove Soul it - game mechanics trump flavor. : )

Rule Interpretation

While playing our old casual decks, my friend tried to counter my Soulless One by casting Remove Soul on it. Is that really allowed???

In every format but Flavor Magic. : )

Flavor vs Gameplay

Why can't Swords to Plowshares deal with swords? That seems like a flavor fail.

And Remove Soul can counter Soulless One. Some flavor falls through the cracks for the sake of good gameplay.

Golem Flavor Miss

New 11 Oct 2013 Asked by cairnwanderer 16 Comments

Why do none of the Golems in Theros have Protection from Gorgons? They are already made of stone.

We can’t always hit 100% of the flavor. Remove Soul can counter a Soulless One.

Reason Behind Change

New 13 Sep 2013 Asked by ununnilium 11 Comments

Actually, Doug Beyer explained in his article "A Fresh Coat of Magic Paint" that Remove Soul was changed to Essence Scatter because ripping out a creature's soul sounds like a black kill spell, not a blue counter.

That too. : )

Spell Repetition

New 13 Sep 2013 Asked by ricefrisbeetreats-deactivated20 4 Comments

Why does both essence scatter and remove soul exist?

Because for some spells that we plan to repeat a lot, we like having options to allow us to help it better fit the world. (See Searing Spear and Lightning Strike.)

Terror Card Return

New 20 Aug 2013 Asked by theblaqdove-deactivated20180513 12 Comments

Are we ever going to get Terror back? I understand that Doom Blade is strictly better, but I really like when I'm able to play alpha/beta cards in standard that aren't basics or just unsummon. I'm also petitioning for the return of Remove Soul.

Terror has a non-regenerating clause that we don’t tend to use much anymore. Also, the nonartifact clause isn’t used much either.

Flavor Imperfections

New 24 Jun 2013 Asked by madcapscience 17 Comments

Does it ever bother you that Broken Fall can't save a creature from Tragic Slip?

And you can Remove Soul a Soulless One. The flavor’s good but it’s not perfect.

Naming Constraints

New 05 Aug 2012 Asked by 53ctum53mpr4-deactivated2016120 4 Comments

If card names are one of the thinnest resources available, why do cards that are the exact same get printed with different names? I know sometimes it's flavor (Kodama's reach vs cultivate) but what about Remove Soul vs Essence Scatter, expanse vs wilds, etc?

Usually a name change is based on the old name not making sense in the new environment. Other times, it’s development wanting players to have access to eight copies in older formats. Also, the resource is not names but simple, elegant names.

Functional Reprints

New 15 May 2012 Asked by linqed-blog-deactivated20190911 1 Comments

What is the reason for functional reprints? There are cards that do the same thing but have different names (Essence Scatter and Remove Soul for instance). As a fan of old cards I would love to see old cards get reprinted in Standard. What makes you decide you want the effect, but not the name? Does it lie in that the old name might be offensive? Or is it more flavor oriented?

The name is usually changed fro one of two reasons. Reason #1: The old name doesn’t make flavor sense in the new setting. Reason #2: R&D wants players to be able to play eight copies in some older format.

Tragic Slip Query

New 24 Feb 2012 Asked by clothinthesand 11 Comments

How can Tragic Slip be used on a creature that flies? How is it supposed to slip in midair?

Here’s one of the things about names. Most names don’t make sense in every situation. For example, is a kill spell supposed to always make perfect sense depending on size and abilities and color and creature type. Yes, it’s funny that you can Remove Soul a Soulless One but trying to pinpoint card effects to perfectly match flavor would a) be impossible to actually do and b) would lead to worse game play. Magic works best when as many cards can interact as possible.

Go For the Throat Logic

New 02 Feb 2012 Asked by grodytoadie-blog 9 Comments

Can you please explain how it's possible for Go For the Throat to destroy Headless Skaab? Headless Skaab doesn't even have a throat!

It’s the same way that Remove Soul works on Soulless One.
