You printed Rancor for zero mana?! You designers are mad! MAD I SAY!!

We already printed Rancor once for a mana cheaper than we intended. : )

Mistake Turned Feature

New 14 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 36 Comments

Are there any examples of y’all making a mistake, then the players fell in love with it, so you decided just to roll with it?

Rancor was supposed to cost 1G and we didn’t catch it until it was already sent off to the printer.

Citing MTG Cards

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by drewblive380 63 Comments

RE: RE: citing MTG cards. Not an easy answer. Most appropriate would be to just cite the card as an image. In APA that would be: * Company producing the product. (Year of card's publication). Card's Name [Collectible Trading Card]. Gatherer. URL. * So you could quote Rancor and cite * Wizards of the Coast. (1999). Rancor [Collectible Trading Card]. Gatherer. URL * (I can't put the actual URL in a question). This should not cite the visual artist unless you are specifically using the art from the card. The copyrighted final product has an implicit license for the art work to appear with the card as published. If you are using the text of the card then you cite the work as published which is the whole appearance of the card as found in a card pack or as displayed on the Gatherer website, and the explicit owner of the complete composition which is the name found in the copyright on the product. If you look on the bottom right of any MtG card this is clearly: ™ & © YYYY Wizards of the Coast

Citing Cards Correctly

Misprint and Errata Procedure

New 20 Oct 2021 Asked by righteousforest 52 Comments

Every now and then a card is issued errata due to a misprint, but I'm curious... Have there ever been misprints that didn't substantially impact a card, such as wrong creature type or a slightly incorrect name, that it was decided not to release errata for?

It is common belief in R&D that Rancor was 1G and got misprinted.

Possibility of Rancor Shift

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by auzzie-almighty 29 Comments

Could Rancor be color shifted into Red?

Unlikely at that cost, but possibly at another cost.

Rancor Power in Standard

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 29 Comments

In your personal opinion, would Rancor be too powerful for a contemporary Standard environment?

I know we’ve talked about it. It’s definitely pushing the boundary of acceptability.

Card Typos

New 23 May 2018 Asked by foilmountain 42 Comments

How many cards do we have today that were typos?

Rancor is the only mana cost typo I know of. Note it’s not really a typo as it wasn’t wrong because production made a mistake.

Rancor Trivia

New 23 May 2018 Asked by americanaprime-deactivated20210 86 Comments

It’s my birthday, and I’d like to request a reprint (or very similar) new version of Rancor, my favorite card. Also, trivia on it would be awesome too, thanks!

Rancor was supposed to cost 1G, but we accidentally wrote it down wrong in the meeting. That’s why it costs G. Happy Birthday!

Rancor Cost Error

New 02 Feb 2017 Asked by sweatypizzasong-blog 61 Comments

Is it true that Rancor was supposed to cost '1 and a green', but somebody misheard it as '1 green' and the mistake wasn't caught in time?

The cost was agreed upon by development and then recorded incorrectly.

Rancor's Cost Error

New 18 May 2016 Asked by reeseht 51 Comments

Hi Mark. Talking with friends about the power level of Rancor I remember reading an article in the mtg site that said it was an error. Rancor initially will cost 1 mana more and doesn't give trample. Am I wrong? I can't find this article, can you explain that? This fact can be a nice trivia :)

The card did have an error. We changed the cost from G to 1G in development and the change never got recorded. We didn’t realize it until the set came out. Oops.

Cube UN-cards Suggestions

New 28 Oct 2015 Asked by luckylooter 35 Comments

I'm adding a few UN-cards to my cube, which is basically just focused on being fun and powerful limited cards. Rancor and Skullclamp are probably the best cards in it. I've added Who/What/When/Where/Why and Booster Tutor (Cube packs only), are there any others that come to mind as good additions?

Suggestions?

Rancor in Red?

Could a appropriately-costed Rancor be printed as a red card?

As part of a cycle? Maybe.

Rancor Trivia Gift

New 13 Dec 2014 Asked by elnefashu 35 Comments

Hey MaRo, it's my birthday today! Can I get a trivia on my favorite green card of all time, Rancor? Thanks!

Rancor was changed in development to cost 1G and then accidentally didn’t get changed. We caught the error late in the process and decided it wasn’t worth the not insignificant price tag to fix. Happy Birthday!

Pronunciation Guide

New 20 Oct 2014 Asked by rxphantom 31 Comments

I know the topic of pronunciation comes up sometimes, especially for Garruk. It's even more troubling when real words are the victims of this grammatical mangling! Can you join me in telling the world that Rancor rhymes with "anchor?"

It does rhyme.

Rancor Trivia

New 18 Jul 2014 Asked by esper109 63 Comments

Hi, it's birthday trivia time! Anything about my favourite card Rancor? I always use this card to beat my brother, and now his wife does the same, so I love it!

In development we tried the card at G. We felt it was better than we wanted and changed it to 1G. That change never got corrected in the file and the card got printed at G. True story. Happy Birthday!

Improving Auras

New 09 Jun 2014 Asked by masticon 22 Comments

Totem Armor, Bestow, ETB effects, and the "rancor effect", all seem to be pretty effective ways of making Auras more effective. Is it beginning to feel like the Aura risk problem is being solved or is there still a lot of work to be done?

It’s an ongoing issue that we keep finding different solutions for.

Design Error Consequences

New 17 May 2014 Asked by redjujufish-old-deactivated2020 27 Comments

Can you name any cards where an error resulted in it being either overpowered or underpowered? I remember reading that Tarmogoyf was supposed to cost 4

Tarmogoyf was printed at the cost that was intended. I turned the card in at 2G */* and lead developer Mike Turian chose to change it to 1G */*+1. (Okay, I think he always thought it was */*+1.) Rancor is an example of a card that I believe was supposed to be 1G and accidentally got printed at G.

0-Toughness Bestow Creatures

New 12 May 2014 Asked by danvogelsong 6 Comments

Was there ever any thought of 0-toughness bestow creatures? Pretending to be Rancor, or similar enchantments

That makes them too much like normal auras.

Aura Complexity

New 19 Mar 2014 Asked by commandersredzone 12 Comments

Why can't new auras all have the Rancor return template? Would make them more playable imo.

It would also make them more complicated. Note that auras, while often weak, are very popular.
