Platinum Angel

Platinum Angel Origin

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by puggfuggly 41 Comments

In "Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto" you note Platinum Angel was created by the development team of Brandon Bozzi, Randy Buehler, Elaine Chase, Brian Schneider, Henry Stern, and Brian Tinsman. Then later on whenever you tell the story of its creation, you express regret that you can't remember who designed it. The Ken Nagle mixup might be because he designed a twist on it in Abyssal Persecutor.

I think platinum angel came out well before Ken Nagle joined Wizards, so it couldn’t have been him who designed it.

That is a good point.

Life Payment Rules

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by su92 53 Comments

This is outside your area, but I find it a bit odd that you can't pay more life than you have, but you CAN pay exactly the amount of life you have (and lose). Would it be a good change to not allow that to avoid people making mistakes especially in digital? (Paying your last 1 life only ever matters with Platinum Angel and such)

We want payment working there same for all resources. If you can pay all your mana or all your energy, we have to let you pay all your life.

Platinum Angel Creation

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by su92 28 Comments

Do you remember who created Platinum Angel or how it was made?

We commissioned the art before we knew what it did. We loved the idea of an artifact Angel. I don’t remember who designed it. My best guess is Ken Nagle. EDIT: It couldn’t have been Ken Nagle as he didn’t work at Wizards yet.

Prince Twilight and Platinum Angel

New 25 Jul 2022 Asked by tyaaronbarnett 33 Comments

As the official silver border head judge, how does the rules interaction between Prince Twilight Sparkle and cards like platinum angel work? (assuming that the rest of the ponies get released)

This is more of a normal rules question. I believe Platinum Angel stops alternate win conditions from winning the game. Any rules people double check me?

Platinum Angel Card Trivia

New 19 Jun 2022 Asked by thelongcorgi 56 Comments

I forgot to ask on my birthday, so I hope you don’t mind giving me some late birthday trivia on my favorite card: platinum angel

Platinum Angel was commissioned as a piece of art long before we knew what it would do. We just knew we wanted a mechanical Angel. The art came back great, so we knew it needed a cool design. I think Ken Nagle came up with it. Happy Belated Birthday!

Color Pie for Platinum Angel

Where are platinum angel effects on the color pie?

We do it very infrequently, but my gut is if we put it in a color, it would be white.

Platinum Angel Query

Was Platinum Angel the last marquee card?

It wasn’t technically a Marques card although it meets the requirements. We stopped doing marque cards many years earlier.

Rules Lawyer vs Doom Blade

Does Rules Lawyer die to Doom Blade?

It does. : ) Rules Lawyer doesn’t stop state-based effects from affecting itself. Think of it as a bit quirkier Platinum Angel.

Mirrodin Pure Artwork

New 06 Mar 2017 Asked by lazcarno 39 Comments

I'll tell you what you DID create for Mirrodin Pure, you created artwork for a Darksteel Platinum Angel. That definitely constitutes something that I, for one, am still waiting to see. ;)

Maybe one day in a supplemental product. : )

Destroy Target Player

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by therealzerochaos 31 Comments

If Door to Nothingness ever gets changed to "Destroy target player", could we also get Platinum Angel changed to "You are indestructible. Your opponent can't win the game"?

“Destroy target player” is not identical to “Target player loses the game” so I wouldn’t ever expect errata. Also, it’s not clear the rules can even handle “destroy target player.”

Win-Lose Game Design

New 13 Feb 2016 Asked by mashugasnewblog-blog 56 Comments

We've done platinum angel and abysmal persecutor. What are the odds of "You cannot win the game and cannot lose the game" happening at any point?

Magic is a hungry monster so we’ll probably get there eventually.

Abyssal Persecutor Trivia

New 12 Nov 2015 Asked by dusqofrakdos 28 Comments

Maro! Its still my birthday for a little less than an hour. I was wondering if I could get trivia on my favorite card Abyssal Persecutor.

Abyssal Persecutor was designed by Ken Nagle as a riff of Platinum Angel. Happy Birthday!

Card Originality Challenge

New 05 Nov 2015 Asked by goatllama 41 Comments

You guys running out of original effects (ex: Platinum Angel) or are you just holding out on us?

With each card it gets harder to do something that can’t in any way be compared to a previous card. The real issue here is how high is your bar for originality? Make it high enough and you’ll see very few cards that qualify. 16,000+ cards is a lot of cards to not copy in any way.

Death's Shadow Trivia

New 20 Oct 2015 Asked by swagcrow420 44 Comments

Hello Mark! First , I really enjoy your blog! Anyway... today is my birthday, and I was just wondering if you had any cool trivia on Death's Shadow, one of my favourite cards design-wise. Thanks!

If you have negative life, having something like Platinum Angel on the battlefield, Death’s Shadow can become best ghee than a 13/13. Happy Birthday!

Abyssal Persecutor Trivia

New 10 Apr 2015 Asked by follower-of-liliana 19 Comments

It is possible that today is my birthday. Is it possible to give me some trivia on abyssal persecutor?

Abyssal Persecutor was designed, I believe, by Ken Nagle, the lead designer of Worldwake. I think it was him riffing off the popularity of Platinum Angel from the original Mirrodin which kept you from losing the game while she was on the battlefield.Happy Birthday!

Mirrodin Pure Design

New 07 Mar 2014 Asked by cambodian-scrotum-thieves-deact 18 Comments

I missed my birthday ask but I really want to know; were any cards ever designed for Mirrodin Pure? The Darksteel looking Platinum Angel artwork is too beautiful to not have equally gorgeous mechanics with it.

We had no plans to ever do Mirrodin Pure so no cards were ever designed for it.

Ultimate Battle Win

New 06 Aug 2013 Asked by mr-gus-the-mighty 23 Comments

If I have on the battlefield Omniscience, Platinum Angel, Sigarda, Avacyn, Asceticism , Melira, Witchbane Orb, and Tamiyo's Ultimate at the same time, do I win?

You do in the OPASA AMWOTU format. : )

Mythic Rarity Decision

New 13 Dec 2012 Asked by osomoore 3 Comments

Why wasn't Door to Nothingness in M13 a Mythic? If there was ever a Mythic effect, an artifact that makes players lose the game would be it. For comparison, Platinum Angel and Abyssal Persecutor are both Mythic.

There might have been a crunch at the mythic rare rarity. I agree that I would have made it mythic rare.

Design Timing Decisions

New 14 Jun 2011 Asked by wobbles 0 Comments

You said that you often save cards for "where they'll mean something." So why was Abyssal Persecutor in Zendikar block instead of Scars? Seems exactly the kind of mechanic would have be great on a Phyrexian Platinum Angel.

Hindsight is, as they say, 20/20. Yes, if I knew then what I know now, I would probably have tried to hold Abyssal Persecutor for a Phyrexian Platinum Angel. It’s a lot easier to catch this stuff when everything is locked down and finalized than when everything is in flux.
