Enjoyment from High-Power Reprints

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by astrophobe 40 Comments

As an example of why some of us are happy about high power bonus sheet reprints: at pre-release I had Stoneforge Mystic and Gold Pan, and realized it turns Stoneforge Mystic into colour fixing! It was such a delightful micro-discovery. So I totally disagree that these cards somehow make limited less fun

There is a lot of fun discovery.

Assessing Aftermath Set in Bonus Sheet

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by rynosaur94 68 Comments

Has it become clear yet if cramming the Aftermath set into a bonus sheet was a success or not? Seeing how bomb heavy the prerelease was made me dislike that solution to your self-made problem quite a lot. Stoneforge Mystic and Oko are incredibly warping in limited.

You’re conflating the bonus sheet of reprints with the Big Score collection of new card designs ported over from the Aftermath-ish product.

Mystic Type Status

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 31 Comments

on the subject of creature type errate, can i request that 'mystic' be officially retired? there are a lot of famous "mystic" cards but basically none of them are actual mystics. it's right up there with "giant" for how often the term is used but not represented in a creature's type line. it only appears on 7 cards and it hasn't been used in over 20 years.

It’s what we call semi-retired. We still support it, but don’t use it on new cards.

Ravnica's Varied Tones

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by talos-4 49 Comments

Re: fedoras on weirdsMAKM looks conpletely on-brand for Ravnica to me. Ravnica has always had urban elements, and cards like Tin Street Dodger, Frilled Mystic or Ral Zarek all feel "dressed up" in a way that's still "high fantasy" without feeling out of place amongst MAKM art. "High fantasy," whatever that means, has the spaciousness to include detective agencies, and why couldn't they look vaguely like Vincint Price movies? Ravnica, a sprawling metropolis, surely has room for varied easthetics, including tall collared coats, fedoras, and shifty characters. Bottom line, the vibe and creative of MAKM are amazing so far, it's not out of place on Ravnica, no complaints. It's possible the neigh-sayers are picking up on the difference in tone. The last ravnican outings have been fairly serious or forboding, being either a planewide invasion of undead supersoldiers, or the unstable political situations leading up to that. In contrast, MAKM is pulpy, fun, and much less dire in scope. Murder is still dark, sure, but unraveling a mystery is very different from stopping a planeswalker genocide. For fans who identify strongly with 'Serious Ravnica,' this set could feel off-brand.

I do think Ravnica has enough breadth to hit multiple tones.

Future of Bonus Sheets Theme

New 11 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 41 Comments

Do you think bonus sheets could be less strict in their theming in the future? A lot of people seem to like them, but the possible reprints are very restricted by having to be legendary creatures, enchantments, etc. IN ADDITION to fitting the sets in the first place. For example, Umbra Mystic could've worked in WOE, but it wasn't an enchantment.

The data we have shows that players like the sheets themed, and the cleaner the theme the better. That said, we’re experimenting with bonus sheets, and will try different things that might not be quite so linear.

Combo Bans Versus Cards

New 05 Jul 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 26 Comments

"It’s not something that’s easy to monitor. If an opponent plays a banned card, you know to call a judge. But if not a combo was banned, you don’t know."But if they don't play the combo, it doesn't matter that they do have it. If anything its a huge drawback since that means that if they draw piece A, then they can't ever play their piece B and they'll have to literally hide their hand from onlookers (possibly for the whole tournament) or they'll be disqualified.I don't see it being more complicated then Stoneforge Mystic that was banned EXCEPT if you were playing the exact decklist of the precon deck that included it.

The Stoneforge Mystic thing was only because we banned a card before a preconstructed deck with the card got released. It was a wonky work-around. That shouldn’t be a precedent for anything.

Rules Heavy Cards

New 03 Jul 2023 Asked by nicklbailey 25 Comments

Has R&D ever considered banning in every format such cards as Panglacial Wurm that put a huge weight on the rules?
Is that in part because those cards rarely see tournament play? Would you consider it if such a car became an all format staple. The rules issues of Panglacial Worm with the power-level of stoneforge mystic say?

If Panglacial Worm was causing competitive tournament issues, we’d probably react differently.

Banning Aggressiveness

New 29 May 2023 Asked by zargasheth 55 Comments

Regarding your recent point that "if nothing ever gets banned, we aren't doing our job properly", I think I agree. However, players will often point to the decade from 2006 - 2016 in which only two cards (Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic) were banned in Standard for contrast. Do you feel that more cards should have been banned during that time, or that R&D wasn't pushing the envelope enough?

I think we weren’t aggressive enough in our banning.

Portal Set Query

New 26 Mar 2023 Asked by titania776 21 Comments

This is a weird request but can the instants from the Portal sets be changed back to sorcery but still retain the ability to be played at instant speed? I know its a small thing but cards like Mystic Denial or Extinguish cannot interact with themselves and the other “instants” in the portal sets.

That would cause more confusion than good will.

Elf Creature Redundancy

New 30 Jan 2023 Asked by mrmoustachemm 83 Comments

Given that we already have Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, and Elvish Mystic, would you print a 4th 1-mana 1/1 green creature that taps for G, and if so would that be a good candidate for the "any number in your deck" mechanic?

Unlikely.

Impact on Limited Play

New 20 Nov 2022 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 87 Comments

I played a lot of BRO limitted... Still hate MA type slots. I like balance in my environments and for luck/variance to be minimal as it can be it Magic. I get it, the MA slots are to appeal to other types of players, but is there a way to get reprint cards into packs that don't warp limited like the MA slots in BRO and Strixhaven have?

How do others feel about bonus sheets impact on limited? (Things like Mystic Archive and the Retro Artifacts.)

Card Names and Flavor

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by theshunpiker 33 Comments

I have been searching to see if you have answered this question, because I am sure you have, but I can not find it. Why are identical cards printed with different names, like Terramorphic Expanse | Evolving Wilds, Mind Control | Persuasion, or Llanowar Elves | Fyndhorn Elves| Elvish Mystic?

If cards aren’t problematic in number, we will sometimes change the flavor to better match the creative of the set it’s in.

Preference in Card Templating

New 21 Jun 2022 Asked by elmarcodepico 40 Comments

Hey Mark! A little feedback on Future Sight effect templating. I vastly, vastly prefer the old template where you play with the top card of your library revealed (Future Sight, Oracle of Mul Daya, Courser of Kruphix). I find it annoying to play with the new template (Bolas's Citadel, Mystic Forge, Augur of Autumn), since it always leads to one player staring at the other as they check the top of their library over and over and over.

The reason we prefer it is to keep hidden information in the game. If my opponent always sees the top card of my library, they (eventually) know everything in my hand, and that’s just less fun gameplay.

Preferred Batch Preferences

New 04 Apr 2022 Asked by dlhochy 78 Comments

I know it's a big one, but my preferred batch would be Centaur, Ally, Fractal, Mystic, Yeti, Owl, Octopus, even though the sound of it is something quite precocious.

Trivia on Card Frame Designs

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by lanz37 47 Comments

Hey Mark! I think my Birthday trivia got buried, so I'd love to get some trivia about card frames. My favorite frames are the Mystic Archive and Planar Chaos frames, but I'll accept trivia about any of them : )

The Player Chaos frames were designed as a what if for if we make the “eighth edition” frames hew closer to the original Alpha frames. Happy Belated Birthday!

Validity of Confluence Cards

New 23 Sep 2021 Asked by mj6music 67 Comments

So a command is 4 options, pick 2. A charm is 3 options, pick 1. Are Confluences like fiery confluence and mystic confluence a thing then? (3 options, choose 3, you can pick any option more than once)

They exist, so clearly they’re a thing. Do people want more of them?

Success of Mystic Archives

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by forrestlupin 43 Comments

How successful were the Mystic Archives reprints in Strixhaven? Personally they were one of my favorite parts of the set! Will we see more specialized reprints like this in the future?

Quite successful, so that bodes well for other things like it.

Understanding Historic Horizons

New 15 Aug 2021 Asked by jozogozo 41 Comments

For the people talking about historic being "standard +" Historic already has had five or six anthology expansions, all of jumpstart, most of the mystic archives, and two remastered sets with cards that weren't in standard. Historic Horizons isn't really unprecedented except there are brand new cards in it

Fyndhorn Elves and Modern Legality

New 22 Jun 2021 Asked by trevthetree 39 Comments

Is Fyndhorn Elves specifically printed to not be Modern Legal? I was building a budget Modern deck at my LGS today and was a little bummed when I couldn't find Llanowar Elves or Elvish Mystics and the alternatives I found weren't legal

I assume play design might want to limit how many one drop green mana producers there are in the format.

Mystic as Supported Creature Type

New 04 May 2021 Asked by dalenthas 39 Comments

Wait if Mystic is a supported creature type why is Elvish Mystic a Druid?

It’s supported more in that we haven’t changed the old cards with it than we’re actively making more,
