Magic Mothers Trivia

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by guywithbooks 122 Comments

I invoke the ancient rite of birthday trivia. Do you have any trivia on mothers in Magic? If that’s too general, something about Cathartic Reunion or Mother of Runes?

I believe either Mother of Runes or Elesh Norn, Mother Of Machines is the most played mother. When we made Mother of Runes, the brand team at the time questioned having an old woman on a high-end tournament card, but we felt strongly it sent an important message, so it stayed. Happy Birthday!

Deck Limit & Dragon Trivia

New 06 Apr 2022 Asked by kandykidzero 48 Comments

Hello Mark,I would like to ask that Mother of Runes receive an errata to allow any number in a deck. There are so many neat arts available and another one has just been released for the April Secret Lair Super Drop, it is hard to just choose 4 to play with!

Thank you.

P.S. It is my daughter's 9th birthday today and she really loves all the Dragons in Magic: The Gathering, if you have any trivia for her.

I can’t help you with the Mother of Runes thing, but here’s some a Dragon trivia question for your daughter:Red has more monocolor Dragons than any other color by a lot (116). What color has the second most monocolor Dragons? (I’ll put the answer in the notes.)

Protection from Colorless

Re: protection from colourless: Giver of Runes from Modern Horizon grants protection "from colorless or the colour of your choice" so it's already a thing for white (and a way to let Mother of Runes not be strictly better than Giver).

My birthday was in April and I'm sure my trivia request ended up in the mix of all the questions you get, so just renewing today - Anything you can give me on Mother of Runes (the original)?

It’s the only tournament staple to drink tea (I assume it’s tea) in her art. Happy Birthday!

In honor of Mother's Day today, do you have any trivia on the multi-format staple, Mother of Runes?

I think she might be the only Magic creature shown drinking tea. Happy Mothers’ Day everyone!

Mom Trivia

It's my mother's birthday. Can I get some mom trivia?

Mother of Runes is one of a handful of cards to be directly parodied in an Un-set. (Unhinged’s Mother of Goons.)

Mother of Runes Likelihood

Mother of Runes showing up in a standard legal set on the storm scale?

Chances are low (let’s say an 8) as the card is a bit overpowered for Standard. Not a developer, yada, yada.

Simple Legendary Commanders

New 15 Aug 2014 Asked by begle1 23 Comments

I know you hate commander, but could we please get some smaller, simpler, more archetypal commanders? I'd kill for a legendary Sakura-Tribe Elder, Hypnotic Specter, Mother of Runes, Neurok Commando or Young Pyromancer!

The problem is that simple, utility style creatures tend to not be legendary.

Since it's Mother's Day, do you think you could give some trivia about mother of runes or mother of goons?

Check out the graffiti on the background of Mother of Goons. It’s all Un-jokes. My favorite - “It’s Coming!”

Mother of Goons Insights

Today is my mom's birthday! Can we get any info on Mother of Runes, or her counter part Mother of Goons?

There are a lot of jokes in the art of Mother of Goons. Most of the graffiti are references to other Un-cards. My favorite: “It’s coming.” Happy birthday to your mom!

I know it's not technically a vegetable, but please tell me there was a Mother of Prunes in the Unglued 2 file.

Unglued 2 predated Mother of Runes.

Mother of Runes Reprint

New 14 May 2013 Asked by herpdatderp 6 Comments

do you think mother of runes could be reprinted in a standard environment?

That’s more of a developer question but I believe it’s considered a little too strong. (Take my answer with a grain of salt though as this isn;t my area of expertise.)

Creative Card Choices

Cartel Aristocrat could've been such a nice throwback to Mother of Runes. Kinda sad it wasn't. :(

Not everything has to be a throwback.

Humans in White

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by lkanman 9 Comments

With only regards to Magic and not under any other context, can't Humans could be the main tribal for white? From Mother of Runes to Stoneforge Mystic to the new Innistrad humans, the tribal seems to make the most splash with white even if there are lot of humans in other sections of the pie. I also think it would put some plainness (intended) for other color's more fantastic tribes to bounce off of.

In many ways the humans are white’s characteristic race. The only quirky part is that it’s the only characteristic race that shows up in almost every set in every color.
