Prowess in White's Pie

New 20 May 2024 Asked by typical-johnnyspikevorthos-blog 21 Comments

As an aside from that one question about whether prowess is still tertiary in white: Monastery Mentor being reprinted into standard as recently as MOM is a really good indicator that prowess is still in white's color pie, isn't it? I am assuming that reprints into standard still follow the same mechanical color pie that brand new cards have to.

Prowess is still tertiary in white, and yes reprints into Standard care about color pie appropriateness.

Premier Set Reprints

Hi Mark, I noticed how premier set have been getting high profile reprints at rare/mythic level such as Monastery Mentor, phyrexian Obliterator, Diabolical Intent, Liliana of the Veil etc., in addition to some interesting common/uncommon reprints. I would like to express that this form of reprinting cards is the most satisfying form I experience as it blends the elements of worldbuilding, nostalgia and card accessibility really well! Neither core sets nor master sets really did the trick for me. I hope this trend will continue?

Where it makes sense.

Commander Format Issues

On blue transform I think that people's opinions on it might skew with their preferred format. In standard, modern and legacy a vanilla 2/2 or 3/3 can block or trade with many aggro creatures or threaten cards like pyromancer or monastery mentor. There is a cost to using as removal. In commander a vanilla 3/3 is nothing, making Pongify and Hybridization colour shifted Swords and Path. It fits flavour but you've repeatedly said blue removal should be counters or only tempo plays.

I finally get it. It’s not a color pie issue. It’s a Commander format issue. We don’t control Commander, so you want to talk to the team that oversees it and talk to them about the need to possibly ban some of the more egregiously (for the format) pushed transformation cards.

Creature Token Complexity

New 16 Jan 2015 Asked by damullet 15 Comments

Most creature tokens nowadays have Square stats (1/1s, 3/3s) and either no keywords or just something like Flying or Haste. How much more complexity do cards like Monastery Mentor or Mardu Strike Leader eat up by making tokens with other keywords and nonsquare stats?

Some. Complexity goes up significantly the more you make within the same set.
