If mana flare only lasted one turn would it be in-pie for red?

Possibly.

Mana Flare Mechanics

Hi Mark,Is mana flare considered a bend or break in red? I’m curious as red gets unique forms of ramp in terms of rituals and treasures, but I don’t think I’ve seen any other monored cards that buff land mana production.

Mana Flare is somewhere from severe bend to break. It’s not something we do anymore in red.

Color Shifted Cards Inquiry

New 06 Dec 2021 Asked by mysterio797 47 Comments

Hello Mark, in original Kamigawa there were some “color shifted” cards like Ghostly Prison (originally Propaganda) and Heartbeat of Spring (originally Mana Flare)….will we see any “color shifted” cards in Neon Dynasty?

That’s not something we consider a Kamigawa thing. Any set can do that if they give the right card design.

Card name homophones

How likely are card name homophones? Are there any already?

Unhinged had Mana Flair, which is a homophone of the Alpha card Mana Flare.

Mana Flare Color Shift

Hello Mark, was Mana Flare a break for red to produce mana?

Early Magic was a little more all over the board colorpiewise. The ability is now in green.

You said Mana Flare was no longer in red's color. But doesn't red still get rituals. Could red get a High Tide effect?

Red can get one shot mana boosts, just not permanent ones. That’s green.

Mana Flare Reprint Possibility

Can I request a Mana flare reprint?

You can. It’s no longer in red’s color pie, so it won’t be in a Standard-legal set.

Homophones in Card Names

New 09 Aug 2016 Asked by machine-elf-paladin 29 Comments

So capitalization and (probably) punctuation are out for differentiating card names. What about homophones? Could you make a card named Encyst, or does the existence of Insist prevent that?

Unhinged had Mana Flair (in contrast with Mana Flare) so homonyms are allowable, although probably frowned upon in black border.

Birthday and Mana Flare

New 17 Feb 2016 Asked by dgbrown42 28 Comments

Mark - yesterday was my birthday, and it made me think back on my Magic-themed birthday party in 7th grade -- way back in 1995. Got any trivia on that year, or my favorite card at the time, Mana Flare? Thanks!

Mana Flare has a homonym card twin, one that has a name the sounds the same - Mana Flair from Unhinged. Happy Birthday!

Mirari's Wake Origin

New 30 Jul 2015 Asked by dpach 25 Comments

hi mark is my bday and could you tell me about my fav card mirari's wake ?

In the early days, one of my favorite cards was Gauntlets of Might. While working on Judgment design, I realized that the two abilities (Mana Flare and Crusade - to use other old cards as reference - getting extra mana and pumping your creatures) were in green and white which were the two focused colors of the set. That was my inspiration for making Mirari’s Wake.Happy Birthday!

Mana Burn Utility

New 21 Dec 2014 Asked by collex1 19 Comments

If baked-in mana burn hardly ever mattered, how could a card with it be in any way useful?

You have to combine it with effects that make it matter. There’s a good chance if we made a mana burn enchantment that the second effect on it would be something like a Mana Flare which would make it relevant without needing a second card.

Mana Burn Relevance

New 01 Jun 2013 Asked by thoughtreflection 15 Comments

"The issue in removing a rule isn’t about 'does it ever matter' but rather how often. Mana burn, as example, mattered but only in one in several hundred games." How has this been determined? In multiplayer Magic, ramping through Coffers/Urborg or Mana Flare effects or other such big mana sources is extremely common, especially in EDH. I can't remember the last time I've played a game where mana burn wouldn't have been hugely relevant if it were still around.

When we were first thinking of getting rid of mana burn, I told the entire design team to start playing all their games without mana burn. A month later, we gathered and asked them how the games had gone? In an entire month, not a single person had mana burn come up once.
