Card Games Foster Growth

New 27 May 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 7 Comments

Hi Mark! I wanted to give my own thanks to you and the card game I love so dearly. When I was 16, friendless and hopelessly autistic without realising it, a friend of my sister saw me walking down the street and gave me a tupperware box of Magic cards that he was about to throw away (mostly goblins from 10th Edition).

I went to my LGS to learn how to play the game and found not only a love for the game, but a creative outlet, a great group of friends, and the confidence I needed to grow as a person.

I was hired to run their Magic events and eventually worked my way up to manager/"The Card Guy" and some of my happiest life moments, including finding an equal passion for reading DC comics, were made during my decade of working there.

I can only imagine where I would be if I hadn't gone to my LGS to learn Magic that day, but I know I can't imagine my life without it, so thank you to everyone who helped make, and continues to make, such a wonderful game.

P.S. the first booster I ever opened was Avaycn Restored and after being blown away by Vorstclaw I've been a Timmy ever since!

Thanks for sharing.

Song of All Credits

New 17 May 2023 Asked by sarroth 26 Comments

Did you have any work crafting any of the cards with Song of All in their text box, like the Urza block cards Congregate, Planar Birth, Serra’s Embrace, or the Voice of [ideal] mega cycle? Easily my favorite flavor texts as they were one of the first things I read when I was learning Magic that alluded to the broader lore, and it hooked me.

I had a hand in most of those card’s designs, but didn’t have anything to do with the Song of All flavor text.

Teaching New Players

New 27 Apr 2023 Asked by sparkvalk 31 Comments

Do we have any chance to see remainder texts of evergreen mechanics or even remainders of basic rules and card types? It could make easier to teach someone new to play magic by letting cards to introduce and explain themselves.

Products aimed at beginners will do that.

Learning Draft Skills

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by monobak 20 Comments

My playgroup has been debating how many hours it would take to teach someone who has never played magic to become an average drafter (including deck building and playing). To focus the question, we constrained the premise M21. Our answers range from several hours, to 40 hours, to more. Care to weigh in?

I’m not sure what “average drafter” means.

More Angels Request

New 15 May 2022 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 50 Comments

In response to the ask about the number of angels, I want to request *more* angels and angel token creators. They are some of my favorite cards in magic and seeing each set’s new Angels is the highlight of spoiler season for me.

If you learn nothing else from this blog, I hope you learn Magic players are individuals that want different things. There is literally no action we’ve ever taken that someone didn’t love and another didn’t hate.

Learning Magic Card Creation

New 12 Dec 2021 Asked by nik-murphy 29 Comments

Hi Mark! In your opinion, what’s the best way to learn how to create magic cards, from color Id to abilities to mana value?

You will learn the most by just designing cards and iterating them.

Request for Non-World Specific Cards

New 23 Oct 2021 Asked by clevibert 32 Comments

I know that vanilla commons are important for gameplay, but can I request that you make vanilla cards non-world specific? They're pretty generic creatures already and I feel like it would help with the gronkability of gameplay as players become more enfranchised.

I’m confused. Why does it matter that you can’t identify what world a Vanilla creature is from.? I don’t understand why that makes learning Magic easier.

Cross-Fandom Engagement

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by ibhalfheart 45 Comments

Dear Mark, we often hear now that the purpose of UB is to bring people from other fandoms into Magic. So a Warhammer themed MTG-set would bring in Warhammer fans. But how does that work, when Warhammer fans don't play the game and don't see the cards? All you seem to be doing, is instead introducing Warhammer to MTG fans, not the other way around.

I’m hearing a lot of “my friend who plays D&D has never wanted to learn Magic, but now they do.”

I’m not going anywhere. It wouldn’t be a weekend if I’m not having a back and forth with the players. : )

Teaching New Young Players

New 02 May 2020 Asked by ark-no-spoons 41 Comments

I am running a program for middle school and high school players. What is something you wish younger/newer players understood about the game that you would include when teaching someone new?

I like spending more time on flavor (colors, planeswalkers and worlds) early to show all the possibilities of the game.

Open House Appreciation

New 23 Sep 2018 Asked by mystringoffate 32 Comments

I just went to the MTG Open House this weekend and I really enjoyed myself. I brought along a few friends who were new to the game and I loved to see all the effort you all are putting into involving new players. I hope events like this continue in the future. Thank you and best of luck with everything you do!

You’re welcome. We’re committed to making good ways for beginners to learn Magic,

Teaching New Players

New 15 Jul 2017 Asked by slimeyredmobilesuit 42 Comments

This next week my coworkers and I will have some time off together and two of us play Magic and three of them are interested (two with decks already) but I haven't really played seriously in awhile. Because of that, I'm nervous. The one thing I plan on doing is explaining the anatomy of the cards. Are there any other tips in teaching someone to play you could give me?

Magic Duels Tutorial Praise

Maro, today at my school there was someone who wanted to learn magic. I tried to help them learn, but they were still kinda confused. So after their first game I recommended Duels. High five the team who made the tutorial, cause I'm sure that will help my friend more than I can.

Magic Duels is a great tool for helping people learn how to play Magic.

Introducing New Players

New 28 Apr 2015 Asked by jz0212 148 Comments

What is the best way to introduce a new player to the game? My girlfriend said she was curious about the game (tentatively) and im afraid in my excitement I may go too fast or take for granted the things that come naturally after years of playing

Rule #1 of teaching someone Magic: It is more important that the person have fun than anything else including learning all the rules.

Teaching Magic Basics

New 26 Apr 2014 Asked by jon64 19 Comments

What is the very first thing you would teach someone who knew nothing at all about Magic, but wanted to learn how to play? I'm thinking the color pie, but maybe I should start somewhere else?

The color pie philosophies are a good in for someone that knows nothing about Magic. Just remember to keep it brief. Make them want to ask unlimited questions about it.
