Innistrad: Midnight Hunt

Davriel Cane Request

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 10 Comments

Hi Mark! May I please request Davriel Cane in a premier set? He was originally planned for Strixhaven and Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, but has his chances of returning dwindled since then? (Yes, I know he doesn't want to be bothere, but so did Bilbo Baggins).

I can pass the request along.

Staying on Planes

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by strixheaven 29 Comments

Hi Mark. One of the concerns I have had for future sets is that there aren't any sets that take place on the same plane i.e. a plane that takes place over multiple sets. This makes it feel like the planes don't get enough time to be fleshed out and that it feels too much like we're jumping back and forth between planes too quickly. Is this a common concern or do most people prefer the variety of moving between a lot of different settings?

The message that we got loud and clear during the block era was that players generally don’t like staying on the same plane. We do on occasion though stay on the same plane for two or more sets (Guilds of Ravnica/Ravnica Allegiance/War of the Spark, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt/Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Dominaria United/The Brother’s War).

Story Pacing Concerns

New 15 Jan 2023 Asked by livefromtheloam 67 Comments

Hi Mark,To throw my voice into the cacophony, I want to first say that all the authors have done an amazing job of the story lately. Getting Seanan McGuire to head the All Will Be One main shorts was a brilliant call. However, I agree that things have been feeling very rushed, especially in Dominaria United and Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Jumping from action scene to action scene with little setting, character, or plot development in between reduces the emotional stakes of the story. For standalone sets like Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, the five and five main story / side story model works great. For something as profound and important as the largest Phyrexian invasion in Magic's history, an event almost thirty years in the making, it's a little disappointing that the story is being treated as business as usual. I understand that the story team has budget constraints, and historically novels (and ebooks) don't sell well, so I don't know what the solution is. Maybe it's to save a few slots for extra stories when a huge event is in the works. I hope something a bit grander is announced for March of the Machine. Thanks, as always, for listening to the fans.

Thank you for the input. I’ll pass along the concerns.

Standard Set Release Confusion

New 20 Dec 2021 Asked by ilgwa 54 Comments

Hi Mark, I am still confused about the number of Standard sets. You said the summer (June) moved to make way for Crimson Vow, but isn't the June set New Capenna? Any way I look at it I count 5 standard sets in 2021 (Kaldheim, Strixhaven, Forgotten Realms, Midnight Hunt, Crimson Vow) and 4 standard sets in 2022 (Neon Dynasty, New Capenna, Domimaria United, Brothers War).

Sets are grouped by Magic years not calendar years.Magic ‘20/‘21 added four sets to Standard- Zendikar Rising- Kaldheim- Strixhaven- Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten RealmsMagic ‘21/‘22 adds four sets to Standard: - Innistrad: Midnight Hunt- Innistrad: Crimson Vow- Kawigama: Neon Dynesty- Streets of New CapennaMagic ‘22/‘23 will add four sets to Standard- Dominaria United- Brothers War- “Lacrosse”- “Marathon”

Trading Mechanic Query

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by metallicity 34 Comments

"when Innistrad: Midnight Hunt took the decayed Zombie creature tokens from Innistrad: Crimson Vow, they traded them the Spirit mechanic." Did Spirit have a tribal mechanic besides Disturb at some point (or on cards we haven't seen yet)? This idea of trading mechanics seems odd if both sets were using Disturb, just in different ways.

The original version of the Spirit mechanic for Midnight Hunt was double-faced creature cards that died into auras that granted a similar ability, sort of a re-done haunt using double-faced card technology. Set design ended up turning that into disturb (meaning there was a cost to pay to “cast” the backside) and then realized they could do two versions and it made sense to do the creature/creature version first.

Confusion between Set Symbols

New 27 Oct 2021 Asked by johnjanuarius 88 Comments

Hi Mark, just wanted to say that in all the time I've been playing Magic, I have never gotten two set symbols confused for each other as often as I have Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. Love the game and all that you do though!

I’ll pass along the comment. Thanks for the kind words.

Innistrad Set Drafting Compatibility

Are Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow designed to be drafted together?

There are synergies between them purposefully built in.

Identifying Magic Year's Start

New 01 Oct 2021 Asked by justherefortheschadenfreude 38 Comments

Hi Mark. Do you consider AFR or MID as the start of the new Magic year? Also, will Dominaria United be the start of the next Magic year?

The start of the Magic “year” is when rotation happens so Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Dominaria United are both the starting set.

Request for Thalia Card

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by petruscaex 67 Comments

My only sadness with Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is that I didn't see Thalia. My happiness is seeing Thalia. My wish is a new Thalia card. I'm happy when Thalia is happy. I believe in Thalia supremacy.

I can say Thalia is still on Innsitrad. : )

Concerns Over World Consistency

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by radjanspiritmonger 184 Comments

My frustration with Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is that it rubber-banded back to its roots after a significant world-changing event occurred. This happened with Zendikar as well, and it feels like retconning.

Zendikar - Adventure Trap world, but Eldrazi released
BFZ - Eldrazi destroy a significant portion of the world
ZNR - World is back to normal and nothing shown of the devastation

Innistrad - Cool gothic horror world
SOI - Eldrazi come to Innistrad but unclear how much devastation occurs, Emrakul decides to sleep in the moon
MID - Back to spooky world and no mention of what recently happened

Somewhere down the line when we return to Ravnica for another set, I would hope that we get to see the people rebuilding the damage from the war of the spark at least in the art if not in the cards themselves.

Those events happen and do impact the world. That’s just not what we’re focusing on. For example, there are giant swaths of wastelands in Zendikar. Us not showing them doesn’t make them go away. I do get the larger note that you would like some acknowledgment on cards that those things did have an impact.

Schedule for Previews

New 23 Aug 2021 Asked by blaze-1013 32 Comments

"Join me later in the week next week as Innistrad: Midnight Hunt previews begin" Does this mean you're article isn't coming out next Monday? Can you say what day it will be out?

The previews start mid-week, so my article is being pushed back to line up with previews, so no, no Monday article next week, but yes, an article next week.

Concerning Innistrad Midnight Hunt Teasers

New 16 Aug 2021 Asked by lootthekey 29 Comments

Just to be sure, that little comment that next week you will begin previewing Innistrad: Midnight Hunt isn’t a quirk of this article being released on a different date than intended or vice versa for the Innistrad article right?

Previews start in two weeks. Next week I show off the design handoff document for original Innistrad. I’m getting the teaser changed.

Managing Multiple Set Releases

New 08 May 2021 Asked by armeizh 82 Comments

Hi Mark, the comment on Offroading coming in 2.5 years, and all the asks about STX, MH2, AFR, and phyrexians at the same time made me wonder: does it get overwhelming to handle both what you're working on, and what's coming out, at all times?

It is. For example, here are sets that I have to care about (at various levels) right now: Modern Horizons 2, Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Hockey, Ice Skating, Judo, Kayaking, Lacrosse, Marathon, Netball and Offroading. In addition, we’re doing preliminary work on the next couple years. It’s lot to process. On the plus side, I’ve lived this life for a long time, so I’m used to it.
