Fourth Edition Reprints

New 09 Feb 2020 Asked by szwanger 23 Comments

Follow-up question on Fourth Edition reprints: 3rd Ed had a whole bunch of cards that were deemed so strong that they needed to be restricted (as during 3rd Ed there was no Standard) such as Black Vise, Ivory Tower, etc. Why were they reprinted in Fourth Ed?

I don’t know. Before my time at Wizards.

Dual Lands in Fourth

New 08 Feb 2020 Asked by theuninvitedghost 29 Comments

I’ve been a longtime reader and asker, and I can’t believe It hasn’t occurred to me before to ask you why dual lands weren’t reprinted in fourth edition. I think that was before your time working at Wizards, but if anybody has or can get the answer for that, it’s bound to be you!

They realized they were too strong, so like other cards that were above the appropriate power level, they took them out of the core set.

Mystery Booster Frames

Re: "Were there any cards in Mystery Booster that were reprinted with frames from Fourth Edition or earlier?" The oldest cards in the Mystery Booster were Sapphire Charm and Kaervek's Torch, both from Mirage.

Modern Horizons Hype

New 01 May 2019 Asked by djscrub 35 Comments

You have said before that full Time Spiral Block is your all-time favorite draft environment. I have been playing since Fourth Edition, and I also rate it among the very best. Is Modern Horizons going to be what I've been waiting for?

There’s a very good chance. : )

Chronicles Counting

New 15 Apr 2019 Asked by perfectlydarien 49 Comments

I would suggest that counting Chronicles separately from Fourth Edition makes no more sense than does counting Alpha and Beta as separate sets. It was packaged in different packs, but was considered to be an extension of Fourth Edition, and was legal everywhere (and everywhen) Fourth Edition was; it didn't occupy an "expansion" slot in Type 2, and it rotated along with Fourth Edition when Fifth Edition came out. It should probably not count.

I agree that counting Chronicles seems odd. Thoughts?

Balance Card Mystery

New 27 Dec 2016 Asked by superfantasticpiratecollection 40 Comments

Hey Mark. It was my birthday on the 26th and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favourite card of all time, Balance.

One of the great Magic mysteries was how Balance got into Fourth Edition. (Note this was before I got into R&D.) R&D knew the card was a problem, it was restricted! My guess is it was a pet favorite of one of the designers and he talked the others into including it. It’s how Necropotence ended up in Fifth Edition. Happy Belated Birthday!

Unlimited Print Risks

What would the consequences be of printing Modern Masters 3 at an unlimited quantity?

I suggest reading some articles about what happened with Chronicles and Fourth Edition.

Reserve List Creation

New 01 May 2016 Asked by daysundoing 19 Comments

For those of us who weren't around then, what was done to upset players and thus create the reserve list?

Chronicles and Fourth Edition reprinted numerous older cards that were hard to acquire in large quantities.

Not that I know of.

Wards Enchantment Query

New 05 Dec 2014 Asked by fried-and-died-inside 13 Comments

Why do the wards from Alpha-Fourth Edition specifically say that the Blue/Black/etc protection doesn't make the WHITE enchantments fall off?

The text keeps them from falling off if you change their color to the color that the ward grants protection from.

Family Gaming Tradition

New 12 May 2014 Asked by conflictedpsyches 26 Comments

My dad and my Uncle played during Fourth Edition. He stopped playing when I was born, but a couple of summers, I pulled them out of the closet and taught myself and my cousin how to play, and was instantly hooked. Now, the four of us play all the time, and I even taught my nephews and their friends how to play. The cycle continues~ :3

Rare Sheet Mystery

New 21 Aug 2013 Asked by lotier 3 Comments

What's that uncut sheet sitting in the "Danger Room"? ("Danger Room" awesome name by the way, is there a soundtrack attached to play when someone enters the room?)

I believe it is the rare sheet from Fourth Edition

Reserve List Background

New 23 Mar 2013 Asked by quantumecho-deactivated20130825 11 Comments

I'm sure you get tons of questions about the Reserve List, but I had some queries about its history that you hopefully haven't seen a million times. Can you tell us under what circumstances the Reserve List was created, and maybe give us some background into the decision? Why are some cards that are fairly balanced by today's standards and aren't particularly valuable (things like Thunder Spirit and Aeoliphile) on the List? Thanks!

The Reserved List came about in reaction to the release of Chronicles and Fourth Edition edition back in 1995. Both sets included cards that previously were very hard to obtain. Many players complained and Wizards in response made the Reserved List as a promise that they wouldn’t do this again. The Reserved List was all the rare cards from the sets at the time (and also the uncommons of the core set but those later got removed) that had not yet been reprinted. Wizards at the time then promised that each year they would tag a certain percentage of the rare cards (80% is my memory) and those cards would be added to the list. The 20% that wasn’t added were cards that were allowed to be reprinted. Right before Mercadian Masques came out, Wizards said they were stopping the adding of cards to the Reserved List. Note that the 20% were cards Wizards at the time believed were reprint able, but other than that the cards on the Reserved List weren’t about power level but rarity.

Elemental Reprints Query

New 29 Sep 2012 Asked by hotfurrystuds-deactivated201812 12 Comments

How come Fire Elemental, Air Elemental and Earth Elemental have all been reprinted recently but Water Elemental hasn't since Fourth Edition?

Hmm, so we’ve done earth, wind and fire. I wonder if 70’s music has anything to do with it. : )
