Changed Defense Flashback Cost

Hi, Mark. We used to have spells whose flashback cost was lower than the CMC, like the famous Acorn Harvest and Deep Analysis. This helped to encourage some super fun graveyard shenanigans, like Roar of the Wurm in UG Madnes… but this isn’t something we see nowadays. What happened? The philosofy changed?


They tend to cause play design issues.

FYI, there are several modern bordered FNM Promos with the Tombstone icon: Cabal Therapy, Chainers Edict, Deep Analysis, Roar of the Wurm, and Wonder.


Years later, technology changed and we were able to do it.

I'm going to make a Maro theme deck for casual, and I thought it would be cool to try keep it to cards you designed. Any card draw or other spells you could suggest? Abby colour is fine. :-)

Old Archetypes Nostalgia

i was reading jon finkel on twitter, and he complains about the lack of old archetypes in modern, and, in a deep analysis, a lack of component that made old magic so fun, especially in modern format. what do uou think where a lot of pros complain about a format?


If you are part of something long enough that constantly evolves and changes, you will have nostalgic feelings on where the thing once was. The current game has drawn in more players and has a more consistent set of results at the top level of play, so I’m happy with where Magic is at both as a game that’s fun and one that’s skill testing.

Flashback Design Choice

Why weren't there alternate flashback effects in INN and DKA like the older flashback cards? I was just thinking how nice it would be to have Deep Analysis, or Lava Dart.


The simple answer is the set didn’t need them. Flashback is a mechanic I know we’ll use again and again so no need to eat up design space we didn’t have to.
