Decimate

Understanding Decimate's Color Alignment

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by sniccups63 44 Comments

What's the deal with the card Decimate? It destroys every permanent type other than planeswalkers, meaning it's extremely close to "destroy target permanent", but it's red/green. Neither red nor green can destroy creatures normally, right?

While red doesn’t “destroy” them, it does have direct damage as a means to get rid of them. It’s a a bend, but wasn’t a giant one at the time. We are much less likely to make a red spell with “destroy target creature” today.

Decimate's Break or Bend

New 20 Jun 2021 Asked by greywanderer13 27 Comments

Is the "destroy target creature" part of Decimate a bend or break, since red or green doesn't get to destroy a creature? Or is that something R/G can do?

It’s a bend. Between red and green, it can “destroy” most creatures. High toughness non-artifacts, non-fliers should give red/green some trouble.

Decimator Web Trivia

Could I get a bit of trivia about Decimator Web?

Okay. This is actually a cool story. Erik Lauer never liked the card Decimate from Odyssey because it didn’t match the meaning of the word (to eliminate one tenth of something) so on the first set he led the development for he made a card with Decimate in its name that actually did what the word meant and he found three different ways to do it.

Red's Power Limits

You seem to have said "red, while not normally destroying, can effectively destroy creatures." (regarding Yule ooze) So this means that cards like Decimate are within the color pie. I heard before that red did not destroy creatures. I'm confused.

Red does not destroy creatures. That’s why I said Yule Ooze was color bending. It was not color breaking because creatures are not traditionally a major weakness for red.

Decimate Precedent

New 16 Jul 2014 Asked by nobthehobbit 10 Comments

So is Decimate bad precedent? Is its violation of the colour pie (neither red nor green can--or, at least, is supposed to--outright destroy any creature) mitigated by the fact that it can't even be cast without also having the other targets, some of which are rather less likely to be around, particularly under your opponent's control?

Yes, it is a bad precedent.

RW RG Vindicate

Why can RW and RG not get Vindicate? Is Decimate bad precedent?

Red does not get “destroy target creature”.

Decimate and Raze Misconception

New 02 May 2014 Asked by crosbygeek 11 Comments

As far as milling keywords go, how about "Decimate" or "Raze?"

I think words that simple mean destroy will be thought of a things that kill the appropriate card type. Decimate sounds like “destroy creature” and raze sounds like “destroy land”.

Decimate Color Pie

New 09 Nov 2012 Asked by zemyla 3 Comments

Does Decimate break the color pie too much, to have RG destroying creatures?

Red normally doesn’t get “destroy target creature” effects instead using direct damage to kill them so it is a bit of a stretch.
