Planar Chaos Effect Distribution

New 11 Jul 2023 Asked by blind42-blog 30 Comments

"Planar Chaos was redividing the effects" were things like Black getting new access to a counterspell through Dash Hopes a part of this? If so, how does that create more room for purple?

Imagine there are a sixty effects divided between the five colors. (Note I’m guessing at the number.) Planar Chaos just redistributed the sixty effects among six colors, so ten per color rather than twelve.

Absence of New Black Counterspells

There seem to be a decent number of old black counterspells. They weren’t necessarily good, but they were there. However, there don’t seem to be any newer black counterspells, the most recent one being Dash Hopes from Planar Chaos. Why’s that? What changed?

There are only two. Withering Boon is from the very early years of Magic (Mirage). Dash Hopes is a punisher card from the set messing with the color pie. I don’t believe counterspells were ever part of black’s color pie since we started monitoring it.

Possibility of Black Counterspell

Can black ever get another counterspell like it got Dash hopes / withering bloon in the past or is that something the design team has no interest in making anymore.

If a second color is going to get a counterspell, I believe it would be white before black.

Dash Hopes Trivia

For my birthday trivia can I have some about Dash Hopes?

Planar Chaos was a set where we created an alternate version of the color pie and in that version black had punisher spells instead of red.Happy Birthday!

Green Counterspell Possibility

New 18 Nov 2018 Asked by dubzywubzy 37 Comments

do you think it's possible for green to have counterspells if it is conditional? (i.e. Avoid fate, Dash hopes)

Green can grant hexproof to creatures at instant speed.

Black Counterspells

Doesn't Black have a counterspell? it's called dash hopes.

Dash Hopes was both from Planar Chaos (the set that messed with the color pie) and a “punisher” spell meaning the opponent had a choice between which effect the spell generated. Black did have a counterspell called Withering Boon in Mirage.

White's Counter Spells

New 01 Oct 2013 Asked by aazadan 13 Comments

You mention white gets a little bit of countering but there are only three unconditional non blue counterspells. Dash Hopes, Lapse of Certainty, and Mana Tithe. Black and White each have an additional two conditional counters. Excluding Mana Tithe since the set it was in was all about changing the color pie it looks like white and black are equal in their counters. Neither has very many though and most of them are over a decade old.

I never said white got nonconditional counterspells.

Punisher Mechanic in Black

New 25 Mar 2012 Asked by pseudolias 2 Comments

You said that Red has the "punisher mechanic", that is "let me have thing X or I punch you in the face.", ala Browbeat. Is the mechanic being red, combined with Planar Chaos's Colourshifting why Black got cards like Dash Hopes, Temporal Extortion, and probably other cards (Brain Gorgers and Phantasmagorian come to mind, but they don't give an alternative other than damage/life loss.) too, but never again afterwards?

Yes, we splashed the punisher mechanic in black in Planar Chaos.
