Red's Punisher Effect

New 03 Apr 2023 Asked by schienamento 50 Comments

From your Mechanical Color Pie 2021, Red is still primary in Punisher effects, so can Red have the Slith Strider ability? "Whenever [this] becomes blocked, draw a card". It's basically a Browbeat on legs...

No. A punisher effect is one where there are two effects (usually on a spell) and the opponent chooses which effect happens. If you don’t block, you take damage, so it’s not a clean choice.

Browbeat Effects on Storm Scale

Where are the "Browbeat" effects (Do x or suffer Y) on the storm scale?

I’ll call them a 6.

Punisher Cards Rarity

New 29 Jan 2019 Asked by strangerside-blog 51 Comments

Why are "Bully" cards (Browbeat, Enchanter's Bane, Risk Factor) so rare? I very rarely play red, but it's my favorite red mechanic.

R&D calls them punisher cards. They’re tricky to balance and the design space is limited. They also cause some color pie confusion when we push the alternate ability. We do plan to do more though.

Punisher Mechanic Nuance

How do you feel about browbeat and the other similar cards where Red gets an off-color effect based on an opponents choice on whether or not to get domed?

Punisher effects where one effect is off color is acceptable (within reason) as long as the other effect is very red and the opponent gets to choose the effect.

Punisher Spells

Are Browbeat like effects (Opponents chooses to hurt themselves or help you) still in Reds color pie?

Yes. We call them punisher spells.

Browbeat Design Category

Is Browbeat a bend, a break or neither? Can Red do things it's not normally allowed to if there's a punisher option?

Yes, but there’s some limits.

Red's Punisher Mechanics

Can red still do effects like Browbeat where the opponent can choose to be dealt damage instead of getting a normally out-of-colour effect?

Yes, Red can still do punisher effects.

Black vs Red Punisher

New 19 Sep 2014 Asked by hargismb 25 Comments

I think a Browbeat "punisher" style card works in black if the flavor is "I'm going to hurt you until I get what I want", meaning the damage happens over time.

I get why the flavor could work in black but I don’t understand why it doesn’t work in red.

Browbeat Effect Origin

New 19 Sep 2014 Asked by extremeconsiderationthemovie 32 Comments

I think Browbeat style effects should be a black thing. It feels natural for black to say "gimme the card advantage and no one gets hurt" and naturally if you chose not to let black have it.. Black will hurt you

Why does it make make more sense than In red?

Red Color Pie

New 09 Jun 2013 Asked by theworlddoesnotspeak 11 Comments

Color pie question! Is Browbeat still safely within Red's slice of the pie? If so, could we see more cards in Red that offer such tough choices?

Punisher cards, what we call cards like Browbeat (“Do Thing X or a punch you in the face.”), is still in red’s part of the color pie.

Addressing Sexism Concerns

New 12 Nov 2012 Asked by sansafro187-blog 25 Comments

Not to browbeat you about it, but your reasoning about appealing to primary demographics is the same sort of excuse sexist geeks use to explain away all kinds of exclusionary aspects of geek culture. "There's nothing wrong with having chicks in chainmail bikinis whose only real purpose are as objects for horny teens to ogle, because only horny geeks buy [whatever media]!" It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Should television shows that tailor to kids not use kids as protagonists? Is that ageist?
Using our primary audience as a lead for the majority of characters isn’t sexist. Not having female characters or only a token character is sexist. Having 1/3 of our characters be female when it is way over the percentage of our player base is us working hard to make sure there are substantial female role models. That is the opposite of sexist.

Punisher Mechanic in Black

New 25 Mar 2012 Asked by pseudolias 2 Comments

You said that Red has the "punisher mechanic", that is "let me have thing X or I punch you in the face.", ala Browbeat. Is the mechanic being red, combined with Planar Chaos's Colourshifting why Black got cards like Dash Hopes, Temporal Extortion, and probably other cards (Brain Gorgers and Phantasmagorian come to mind, but they don't give an alternative other than damage/life loss.) too, but never again afterwards?

Yes, we splashed the punisher mechanic in black in Planar Chaos.

Browbeat Color Bleed

New 24 Mar 2012 Asked by forcemeat-ghost 6 Comments

Is Browbeat a color bleed for Red? Is it a sort of card that wouldn't be printed nowadays?

Browbeat is what is known as a “punisher” card where red basically says let me do thing X or I’m going to punch you in the face. The trick is, these cards can never let red to do what it wants unless the opponent allows it so the punisher mechanic allows us to bleed abilities into red that normally red doesn’t get. In other words, red can try to intimidate the opponent into doing something it normally can’t but the power lies into the opponent’s hands whether or not to actually let red do that thing.
