Chicken

Creature Type Classification

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by aalgot 3 Comments

Why can’t we just have a whole taxonomy of creature types, so chicken, penguin, and hawk are all unique types included in the “Bird” batch, and then we have which is itself included in the “reptile” batch together with dinosaur, Chameleon, and snake.

I don’t think we want that much batching.

Mystery in Menu Choices

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by werewolfcommanderplayer 9 Comments

I order some scrambled eggs knowing that the eggs came from a chicken. Sometimes a quail or a duck, but at least its a bird. I get concerned when the menu tells me they will be serving iguana eggs. I know it's an egg. I know how they'll cook it. I'm gonna be sitting nervously at my table regardless. When it gets served to me and it turns out to be nothing like what I know scrambled eggs to be like, I'm not going to be thrilled to see the seasonal menu next week list shark eggs.

There is a lot of consistency in Magic: the rules, the color pie, templating, etc. Creative is the place where we take, and have taken, the most liberty in pushing new boundaries.

Possibility of More Chickens

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by wingedhotdog 3 Comments

I'm always happy to see more Bird cards (Bloomburrow has me excited)Is there also a chance we will see more chickens without silver borders in the future?

It’s always a possibility. They would be creature type Bird.

Flightless Birds Design

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by 22bebo 23 Comments

Do you think introducing a well-known flightless bird, like chickens or perhaps penguins, would break through the "all birds must fly" idea and allow for more out there flightless birds, like the moa?

I don’t think we’re making flightless birds out of Birds that aren’t iconically known for not flying.

GenCon Event Tale

New 28 Oct 2023 Asked by salamandersofftheclock 225 Comments

Good evening, Mark. I would like to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia! I've heard of the pro-tour in which Unglued, the first un-set, was being played, and a player attacked with Hurloon Wrangler, which has denimwalk (This creature can’t be blocked as long as defending player is wearing denim.). In response, the opponent declared "I take off my pants." However, it's hard to find firsthand accounts of this. Can you tell us how it happened?

It wasn’t at a Pro Tour. It was at 1998’s GenCon. Unglued’s only prerelease events were held at GenCon. That was the event that I head judged dressed as a chicken. We had just started the first round of the first flight and I was walking through the playing area. I then hear the following exchange.“I attack with Hurloon Wrangler.” “In response to you choosing your attackers, I remove my pants.”I literally said, “What have I done?”Happy Birthday!

Costume at Prereleases

New 05 Mar 2023 Asked by godkingjinping 58 Comments

What was the tournament you judged in a banana suit?

There was no tournament I judged in a banana suit. I head judged the Unglued prerelease tournaments in a chicken suit, and the Unhinged prerelease tournaments in a donkey suit.

Un-Set Chicken Suit

May I request an un-card representing a chicken suit (or maybe a game designer wearing a chicken suit) in an upcoming un-set?

Chicken Suit History

New 30 Oct 2022 Asked by lizardwizard100 41 Comments

Mark! Was the chicken suit you wore at the Unfinity panel the same one that gave you bronchitis ?!?

No, two completely different suits. The I wore today (see below) was not at all dusty like the first one.

Limited Formats in Design

New 06 Jun 2022 Asked by jacewindu 34 Comments

Hi Mark. I’m seeing a disconnect in some questions and answers. You’ve recently answered a few questions by saying that limited exists to make use of cards that have to exist anyway (and I do understand that those cards need to exist anyway). But you’ve also answered numerous times that thing X can’t be done (or is difficult to do) because it would impact limited. I think that’s where some people lose you - it would seem that if limited was ONLY a way to make use of cards that had to exist anyway, it shouldn’t create limitations on the designs for sets or cards. Could you perhaps expand on this to help people understand how the format can exist to make use of cards that have to be there anyway while simultaneously it impacts the design of said cards? Feels like a chicken/egg situation.

I think people are conflating two different things. Limited definitely impacts how a set is designed. We change how individual cards are designed, especially at lower rarities, to maximize their impact on limited formats (which also tends to adjust cards for super casual play - aka cards I own). What limited formats do not do is set the average power level of a set. Luckily, the cards that matter most for adjusting limited formats tend to not be the cards that are going to impact the constructed formats. Why a particular powerful reprint is not in the set is a result of power level concerns and not limited play.

Chicken and Egg in MTG

New 16 Mar 2022 Asked by salamangreat-fennec 78 Comments

I have only one complaint about the :Which Came First" article from yesterday: You didn't take the perfect opportunity to ask "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

Egg. Arabian Nights had Rukh Egg, but the first Chicken wasn’t until Unglued. : )

Possibility of Farm-World Plane

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by owenkirby 46 Comments

Hi Mark, do you think a "farm-world" type plane is something that could happen? As in, everything is farm-themed somehow (cows, plows, chickens, crops, pitchforks etc)

Anything’s possible.

Centaur Origin Question

New 15 Dec 2021 Asked by deyuil 55 Comments

How was there a first centaur if you need two centaurs to make a centaur? Or has there just always been two centaurs, from the beginning? It's like a chicken or the egg question.

The philosophers continue to argue. My issue is that to become a creature which is a combination of two different creatures, you can’t just sew two parts together.

Favorite 'Weird Al' Song

New 28 Nov 2021 Asked by lookingupanddown 80 Comments

What's you favorite Weird Al song of the day?

“Chicken Pot Pie” (parody of “Live and Let Die”) which I heard him do live. He’s never recorded it because Paul McCartney didn’t okay it (because he’s a vegetarian).

Pants Removal Story Validity

New 27 Oct 2021 Asked by frogmite 191 Comments

Is the story of "In response, I remove my pants" with Hurloon Wrangler a based on fact or just a myth?

It happened at the prerelease I was head judging in a chicken suit at Gen Con. I believe I have exclusive rights to that sentence.

Cyborg Support in Unstable

New 21 Oct 2021 Asked by thestoreman 31 Comments

Do you think Ustable could have used Cyborg support? Just like Chicken (now Bird) or Donkey before it, Squirrels, Brainiacs and Riggers got at least one tribal card. Or did the Watermark support for the Order of the Widget provide a tribal identity for this group anyway?

Yeah, we used watermark support for each of the five factions in Unstable.

Mark's Taste in Food

New 03 Oct 2021 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 45 Comments

I made a chicken and sausage Cajun gumbo (no tomatoes) today and realized it might be something you would eat since vegetables and fruit don't feature prominently in the dish. Have you ever had a Cajun gumbo?

I also don’t like spicy food. Again, please eat better than me. I’m far too picky.

Animal Theme in Unfinity

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by sniccups63 65 Comments

Unglued had chickens. Unhinged had donkeys. Unstable had squirrels. Does Unfinity have an animal theme?

All I can say for now is the set has a fun tribal theme, but I can’t comment on whether or not it’s an animal yet.

Secret Lair Idea Input

New 04 Mar 2021 Asked by winterwarp 59 Comments

I would like to suggest a Secret Lair idea (that I know at least one person would want...). There are a lot of currently inaccessible cards like Shichifukujin Dragon, the Richard Garfield celebration cards, MicroProse cards, other digital exclusive cards, Heroes of the Realm cards, those "Drake Stone" pseudo-cards, Robot Chicken, and others. These could be printed in gold border to avoid adding them to any formats. What are your thoughts on this idea?

The vast majority of those cards were not designed to be actually played.
