Planeswalker Dog Reference

New 05 Oct 2022 Asked by ricketyeng 41 Comments

Mark, have you ever heard of The Littlest Hobo? It's a (now old) Canadian TV show about a dog who would roam from town to town and manage to help solve problems or save lives. A planeswalker dog reminds me of him and his iconic theme song.

You should watch the latest episode of Tap Tap Concede by Loading Ready Run. : )

Will do. I’ll be there in a couple weeks.

Rosewater's Family Game Nights

New 07 Feb 2022 Asked by drummerjon131 37 Comments

For birthday trivia (mine got lost) i wanted to ask a more down to earth question: Mark, as a gamer that frequently has family game nights, was there a game your family liked to play when you were growing up?

We played a lot of different family games. In fact, we got the very first Trivial Pursuit when you had to import it from Canada. The history questions were all about Canadian history.

Boxing Day's Modern Interpretation

New 27 Dec 2021 Asked by coboney 28 Comments

Canadian, but we also celebrate Boxing Day here. In the modern day, Boxing Day is essentially a shopping holiday, not completely unlike Black Friday. There's nothing else in the modern incarnation really - though historically I understand it was where the wealthy would give to the poor or the hired help

Canadian take on Strixhaven Theme

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by underimpressive 34 Comments

From Canada (which is arguably the nearest to the US, culturally), with a university degree, and there's very little connection between Strixhaven and my experience. It works if I think of it as a fantastical thing, but it's a full miss if I try to relate it to real-world. In my opinion anyway, there may be differing universities. I've only attended one.

I would love for you all to collect examples for me to better understand. I get there are inherent cultural differences, so I would love to get concrete elements of mechanics or flavor that doesn’t reflect your reality with education.

Structure of a University Campus

New 30 Mar 2021 Asked by ziiko-aomori-blog-blog 56 Comments

Hi mark! I'm a little confused. Maybe it's just my view from Canada, but why are college's all on the same campus?

I went to Boston University, but my college at the university was the College of Communications, but there were many other colleges like College of Liberal Arts or the College of Education.

Remembering Victoria Visit

New 21 Jun 2019 Asked by achates-the-brave 19 Comments

Hey, Mark, in your last couple of Drive to Works, you've talked a lot about travelling! However, you didn't mention your visit to Victoria, BC, Canada for the Unstable Pre-Prerelease in December of 2017 in your list of places you've gone for WOTC, nor was it mentioned as your other "trip" for 2017? Is it because it's not a WOTC-hosted event, or did it just not make much of an impression on you? Is it an indication that you're not interested in doing this again?

I’ve just done a lot of traveling and forgot. I had a great time on my trip to Victoria.

Canada Visit

When you were wondering if you'd been to another place in Canada, you were right - you've been to Victoria for the Loading Ready Run Pre-Pre-Release of Unstable. Victoria is also the Canadian city that's physically closest to Seattle.

Good point. I forgot Victoria.

GRN Mythic Edition Thanks

New 22 Sep 2018 Asked by christian-steu 31 Comments

High Fives for the solution of getting the GRN Mythic Edition in the hands of players outside of America/Canada! I really appreciate it (already have ordered one set to pick it up later this year :-) ) and it sounds like a good solution to this problem.

We really do listen to what you all say and try to fix problems where we can.

Token Suggestions

New 02 Sep 2018 Asked by crushcastles23 84 Comments

I have a really weird request. Region specific tokens. I believe tokens are the only way to do region specific cards well. I'm talking like for example, doing bear tokens and the bears are based on regional bears. US: Black Bear, Canada and Russia: Polar Bear, Australia: Koala Bear, China and South East Asia: Panda Bear, South America: Spectacled Bear, Middle East and India: Sloth Bear. You could do it with birds, or dinos, or insects all from the regions you want to have tokens for.

I’ll pass the suggestion along.

Magic sighting in the news: Walt Hickey, formerly of 538, writes a daily numbers-in-the-news email column called Numlock News. One of his inclusions today is on the effect of tariffs on M:tG prices in Canada, from an article in Variety. He even worked in a reference to the card Hidden Stockpile.

Thanks.

Internship Visa Issues

New 11 Sep 2017 Asked by taoengine 34 Comments

"The previous Great Designer Searches had three requirements: 1) You are 18 or older.
2) You are legally able to work in the United States.
3) You are willing to relocate to Seattle." In regards to the second requirement, would WOTC provide a work visa to a Canadian resident?

Sadly no as the prize for winning is an internship and it is very difficult to get a visa for a temporary job.

Highlander's Seeding Challenge

New 12 Jun 2016 Asked by happy-detective-collector 18 Comments

Hi mark! I was curious about how you seed H2H, I am a huge fan of Highlander, but it seems almost unfair that it is pitted against standard immediately, I feel like its definitely higher than some of the other formats shown, but it is being pitted against the most popular constructed format, which Highlander is definitely not near.

Canadian Highlander just barely made the list. That’s why it’s the sixteenth seed and goes up first against the number one seed.
