Blood Artist

Berets in Secret Lair

Two other beret possibilities are the Secret Lair Blood Artist and Elvish Bard.

Blood Artist as Bard

Since we have the Bard type now, and one of them was actually a painter, any chance Blood Artist will be errataed to be a Bard?

You can be a painter and a Bard, but being a painter doesn’t make you a Bard. Bards’ focus is music.

Effects of Life-gain in White

New 02 May 2020 Asked by capricocorn 20 Comments

Just curious, can white have effects that actively hurt the opponent whenever you gain life? Stuff like Sanguine Bond and Blood Artist.

You could maybe create tokens that could potentially later cause damage, but nothing direct.

Designer Signatures

New 14 Aug 2015 Asked by gwydien 12 Comments

I'd like to get some cards signed by you, but I want it to be something you designed. Did you make Bloodline Keeper or Blood Artist? If you didn't/you can't remember what's your favorite vampire card you designed?

I designed a lot of the double-faced cards (like Delver of Secrets, Civilized Scholar and Screeching Bat) but neither of those.

Carnival of Souls

I saw you say Carnival of Souls was a failure of design. If it makes you feel better it's a card in my 5c casual deck alongside Young Pyromancer, Lingering Souls, Skullclamp, Cabal Therapy, Blood Artist, Thoughtseize, Dismember, Gush, Fastbond, and others like Ponder and Brainstorm.

A lot of people spoke up professing their fondness for Carnival of Souls. Mudhole, not so much.

Sacrifice Wording Update

New 05 Jun 2014 Asked by joltt 21 Comments

Bloodthrone Vampire and Viscera Seer have the wording "Sacrifice a creature", newer creatures with the sacrifice ability have "Sacrifice another creature." Going forward, will the latter wording be the standard for creatures with that ability? I need all the Blood Artist triggers I can get...

We now don’t let creatures sacrifice themselves if they need to be around to get the bonus of the sacrifice.

Combat Creatures Role

New 13 Apr 2014 Asked by nolongernow 12 Comments

I believe Magic could benefit from more non-combat creature classes, i.e. More creatures like Blood Artist ... not so much the bear-wrestling Traveling Philosopher.

In a game about combat, creatures have to have some justification being called into combat.

Effects in Gameplay

"Beneficial effects that may surprise you by becoming a problem (eg. Flametongue Kavu on an empty battlefield) are just as important for Magic as harmful effects that may surprise you by becoming useful (eg Killing Wave + Blood Artist)". Agree or disagree?

Disagree. I think there is room for the former but more room for the latter. Why? Because the latter make players feel smart and the former make players feel dumb (aka they more often enjoy the first and not enjoy the second). Note that this is a matter of degrees. The game should have both but I don’t feel in equal numbers.

Mass Removal vs Creatures

New 05 Apr 2013 Asked by chaoticslinky 5 Comments

I know this is more development's deal but wrath effects should not be getting worse! With the creature-base getting stronger we need more answers to players overreaching with lots of strong creatures. Besides, creatures like Thragtusk and Blood Artist make wraths even weaker.

Creature answers *have* been getting stronger. It’s mass removal that’s gotten weaker.

Game's Age Suitability

How is magic "family friendly" when cards can depict some pretty horrific things, like the artwork for blood artist?

I said this blog tries to be “family friendly”. Magic is a PG-13 game.
