Stuffy Doll Callback Trivia

New 14 Mar 2022 Asked by automaticclampeachland-deactiva 60 Comments

Birthday Trivia Time! Can you give me trivia on Stuffy Doll, my favorite Time Spiral callback?

Stuffy Doll first appeared on Black Vise illustrated by Richard Thomas. The character got noticed by the audience, enough so that Richard Thomas included him in other illustrations. Then, during Time Spiral, we decided to make a card out of him. We spent a lot of time figuring out the right mechanic for him and ended up with him being very hard to kill. I have Stuffy Vise doll at my desk. I don’t remember where I got it from. Happy Birthday!

Fourth Edition Reprints

New 09 Feb 2020 Asked by szwanger 23 Comments

Follow-up question on Fourth Edition reprints: 3rd Ed had a whole bunch of cards that were deemed so strong that they needed to be restricted (as during 3rd Ed there was no Standard) such as Black Vise, Ivory Tower, etc. Why were they reprinted in Fourth Ed?

I don’t know. Before my time at Wizards.

Power 9 Game Impact

New 22 Mar 2019 Asked by ironchefravnica 61 Comments

Why would Magic with the Power 9 as normal cards imply turn 1 wins? If players are expected to have those cards, wouldn't Magic then evolve in a way that mitigates the imbalances they can create? I'd imagine corresponding hate in the form of Leyline effects, uncounterable Black Vise and Ugin's Nexus variants, a more vicious version of Manabarbs that hits artifact mana, and so on.

Yes, Magic would evolve to a game that’s not about actually playing the cards but trying to get the card that shuts down the opponent’s strategy first. That game system would appeal to a tiny fraction of Magic’s audience and the game would die off because a trading card game needs a threshold of revenue to support the work needed to create and balance it.

It’s my birthday today! May I have some trivia on my favorite colorless card “stuffy doll”? Thanks Happy Halloween!

Stuffy Doll, originally pictured on Black Vise and The Rack, appeared in the art of a bunch on of cards (five or six, I believe). It would eventually get its own card in Time Spiral. Happy Birthday!

It is my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favorite modern deck's engine; The Rack and Shrieking Affliction : )

The Rack and its companion card Black Vise are two of the earliest cards to feature the Stuffy Doll, a stuffed doll that artist Richard Thomas often included in his art. I have a stuffed Stuffy Doll at my desk.Happy Birthday!

Stuffy Doll Art

Stuffy doll has been the star of many card arts including the rack, black vise, and wall of wonder. Is there any particular reason it was featured so commonly?

Richard Thomas was an artist who liked the Stuffy Doll and put in my of his paintings.

I forgot to ask a birthday trivia for my birthday a few weeks ago...but could I get some trivia for the first rare I pulled, Stuffy Doll?

Stuffy Doll was a character that first showed up on the card Black Vise in Alpha. Artist Richard Thomas liked the little guy so he kept using him in the art of other cards. Most of the time Stuffy Doll was in the process of being harmed.During Time Spiral, we finally made Stuffy Doll his own card.Happy Belated Birthday!

Avatar Card Trivia

New 24 Oct 2014 Asked by th58pz700u 27 Comments

Mark! My birthday was last Saturday and I've been asking everyday, please give me some birthday trivia on one of my favorite cards: Avatar or Woe, The Rack and Thoughtseize.

The Rack, in Antiquities, was made as a follow up to Black Vise, an artifact from Alpha. Instead of punishing a player for having too many cards in their hands, it punished them for having too few. It got played in a lot of discard decks in the day. The creature pictured in it, referred to affectionately as “Stuffy Doll”, first appeared in the art of Black Vise and was in The Rack as a joke that The Rack was a riff off of Black Vise. Happy Birthday!

Handsize and Torture

New 27 Mar 2014 Asked by dankesteinphd 72 Comments

Can you explain to me the flavorful connection between handsize and torture devices? I'm talking about Thumbscrews, Iron Maiden, Black Vise, The Rack, ect.

Your hand is the part of your brain that is currently actively thinking. You know messes that up? Stress. You know what’s stressful? Torture.

Accel World Reference

New 05 Oct 2013 Asked by singerofw 12 Comments

While we're talking about Magic references, the anime/light novel series called Accel World has two characters called Black Lotus and Black Vise, who are the leaders of the protagonist and the antagonist characters, respectively. And the plot revolves around a game, making it even more relevant to Magic.

I hadn’t heard of that one.

Fblthp Following

New 16 Feb 2013 Asked by dontfucklewithshuckle-blog-blog 11 Comments

I am a huge fan of Fblthp, the homonculus depicted on the card Totally Lost. From reading some of the posts here and talking to people at my local game shop, it seems that fblthp has quite a following for a character used in a one-of flavor text joke. Have any other minor characters or cards gotten such a large following in the past?

Yes. Prodigal Sorcerer had quite a following early on. As did Stuffy Doll from Black Vise. There have always been fan favorites.

Unusual Victory Tale

New 17 Jun 2012 Asked by omegaplatinum 7 Comments

In one of my first ever games of Magic (I believe I was around 10 years old), I defeated an opponent using only a Bog Imp and a Raging Goblin. Do you have any funny victory stories you'd like to share?

I once played a game where my opening hand had only one land (this was pre-Paris mulligan). I played Black Vise on my first turn. I never drew another land and was never able to cast another spell. I won.

Stuffy Doll Art Change

New 16 Jun 2012 Asked by ironshade 13 Comments

Why the new art on Stuffy Doll? Everyone's favorite sack-doll mascot (Black Vise, The Rack, Cursed Rack, Leshrac's Rite, etc...) was...well, everyone's favorite sack-doll mascot. Why replace him with non-sack-doll art in a core set? Especially when the core-set art almost never changes so that new players can easily recognize the cards?

Jeremy Jarvis thought we could do a Stuffy Doll with a little more attitude. I personally really like the new art.
