Beseech the Queen

Speaking Mana Costs

New 16 May 2020 Asked by tmbocheeko 26 Comments

How does R&D say hybrid costs when speaking mana costs? Especially the weirder ones like the Mutate ability on the Apexes from Ikoria and things like Thopter Foundry from Alara? What about twobrid like Beseech the Queen and Reaper King?

Let’s say a cost is 2(b/r), we’d say “two hybrid - black/red”. If a card was 2(2/w), we’d say “two hybrid - two/white”’

Vorthos Rule Discussion

That Vorthos rule also prevent Phyrexian Metamorph and Beseech the Queen being shoved into every commander deck, so i like it even from a Mel point of view

I don’t undersrand this argument. In every other format, you can play these cards in this situation. The reason most decks don’t is it’s a huge disadvantage not to be able to have the option to naturally cast the card. Why is casting a colorless spell for 4 okay but casting a spell that can be cast for 4, but also has a second cost, not okay?

Hybrid Commander Complexity

Hi Mark! About this discussion of hybrid (again) in Commander, I just want to point out to people that in one of the last Command Zone podcast, several cases were made that would increase confusion: Hybrid cards but with non-hybrid color activation (Deathrite Shaman) would make "hybrid is allowed but not this"; and Twobrid cards would also mean "can be in any deck" even though cards like "Beseech the Queen" are clearly colored mechanically.

“The current rule is confusing up front, but the change would create these infrequent corner-case confusions” is not the strongest of arguments. : )

Do you have a slang term in R&D for "Beseech the Queen" mana ? Hybrid ?

Two-brid.

Color-Pie Assessment

New 10 Nov 2014 Asked by gonzoron 23 Comments

Was the Beseech the Queen cycle a color-pie fail? (letting white draw 2 cards, or red tutor for anything, or green make small flyers, or black get big pump and trample, or blue do direct damage)

No. We allow colors to get access to many effects through colorless mana (most often on artifacts) just not efficiently. The two-brid spells were only efficient if you had the correct color.

Color Pie Challenges

Concerning colors doing what they shouldn't, how do you feel about Beseech the Queen and its ilk?

I like the cycle quite a bit. I tried to do more cards like it in New Phyrexia but we ended up going to with Phyrexian mana instead.
