Banishing Light

Mechanic Template Change

New 26 Aug 2023 Asked by polluxr 40 Comments

Maro, would you remind me again why WoTC moved away from Oblivion Ring effects (separate ETB/LTB triggers) in favor of Banishing Light style ones (a single trigger)? I was looking at the WOE card gallery and it struck me that Werefox Bodyguard would have been a neater trick if it had the old templating and since Skyclave Apparition was allowed to have it, I was wondering if the tool was still available or if the Skyclave (?)experiment(?) was badly received.

I assume it’s to avoid interactions where the item never returns.

Color Pie Discussions

New 15 Jun 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 44 Comments

Since the subject of white counters is happening, can I request an Ashiok's Erasure color shifted into white? If red is allowed Chaos Warp on the stack white should be allowed Banishing Light on the stack.

Ashiok’s Erasure is playing in some gray space when it comes to white’s color pie. My gut is we wouldn’t make it, but it’s the kind of thing the Council of Colors would discuss.Chaos Warp, by the way, is a color pie break that red shouldn’t have.

Scaling Cards for Multiplayer

New 24 Feb 2021 Asked by gbknight 54 Comments

Is there a growing trend to make cards that scale to multiplayer in the "normal" expansions instead of just in supplements? (IE Grasp of Fate vs Banishing Light)

A growing trend that started seven to eight years ago. : )

Expressing White Set in Blue

New 15 Dec 2020 Asked by jjustin1379 49 Comments

Nikos power set seems mechanically white as it temporarily traps something like o ring or banishing light. How do you express that in blue? Tapping and freezing?

Dehydration and Freeze-style effects capture the flavor fine in blue.

Lock Away Rarity

New 15 Mar 2018 Asked by sharpdressedman87 26 Comments

In your rarities article today, one of the effects that started at uncommon that surprised me most was cards that "lock away" permanents. I can understand how Banishing Light might be more efficient than you want removal to be at common in most sets, but what about the effect would make, say, Isolation Zone more suited to uncommon than common? Asking for cube-building purposes.

It’s just an ability we do at uncommon (or higher).

Exile Mechanic

New 12 Dec 2017 Asked by aesir-blade 21 Comments

I asked about GO TO JAIL-ing a creature my opponent received due to a side quest---you gave an answer as if it were a Pacifism effect, but the card isn't an Aura, it's a Banishing Light-style effect. Having read the FAQ, it looks like the creature goes into exile, but does the "at the beginning of the upkeep of the exiled card's owner" trigger happen in the other game? I'm guessing not?

Oops. It’s not an aura. At the beginning of its owner’s turn, they get it back. It doesn’t matter if it’s in exile.

Oblivion Ring Mechanics

New 15 Jul 2017 Asked by markusleben 21 Comments

I know for Oblivion Ring style abilities you've switched to wordings like Banishing Light's because you could glitch out the way the card worked by sacrificing the O Ring with the enters the battlefield ability on the stack. For a supplementary set designed specifically for more enfranchised players, would you ever consider having cards worded the old way?

I don’t see much value in having the same effect worded differently in two on-sale products.

Polymorph Mechanic Complexity

New 04 Jun 2017 Asked by koga305 22 Comments

Could polymorphing use a variant on the Banishing Light mechanic? In D&D, when polymorphed creatures are killed they revert to their original form. Maybe some of Magic's polymorphed creatures could be tokens that exile the original form and have it return when the token leaves the battlefield.

Solving a problem with a more complex version is not a great long term fix for a problem.

White's Planeswalker Exile

New 10 Feb 2017 Asked by kmalsom 30 Comments

Black can outright destroy Planeswalkers -- Green can occasionally destroy non-creature permanents. Red can do direct damage that can be redirected to Planeswalkers. White and Blue can’t directly destroy them. -- I thought white had ways to directly deal with them: Oblivion Ring, Banishing Light, etc.

I forgot Oblivion Ring-like effects that exile it while on the battlefield. White can do that.

White Counterspell Possibility

New 07 Nov 2014 Asked by patronics-blog 31 Comments

Is White allowed to have a Banishing Light-style effect for a spell on the stack (as a kind of answerable counterspell)? Or is that too hard to grok in the first place?

In theory although it would be complicated.

White's Answer Mechanics

New 04 Jun 2014 Asked by tarrandus 15 Comments

The only color besides white that can take a banishing light permanently off the board is green. Does it bother you that "white's answers have answers" doesn't apply to 3/5 of the pie?

Not all of white’s answers are enchantments.

Red's Weakness

New 17 May 2014 Asked by anxiousavicado 26 Comments

It seems to me that Red is the only color that absolutely can't deal with its weaknesses at all. White's got Banishing Light, Blue's got bounce, Black's got targeted discard, and Green's got fight. Chaos warp seems like a fair way for Red to keep up with the other colors.

I get that people want a way for red to deal with enchantments but “I can just destroy them and 10% of the time maybe I get hosed” is not it.

Targeted Permanent Mechanics

New 25 Apr 2014 Asked by lrmo 11 Comments

Will we see cards like Banishing Light that can target your own permanents? I understand that in my last question you mentioned you lost the targeted draw argument. But there are a few targeted draw cards that come out. So perhaps most cards follow the new template with only targeting opponent's permanents, but every so often one that can target your permanents too.

It will vary on a case by case basis. Note that Banishing Light’s restrictions is probably more about problems that come from being able to targeting your own permanents (especially shenanigans with multiples) than Magic Online misclick issues.

Targeted Card Draw Logic

New 18 Apr 2014 Asked by lrmo 14 Comments

Just over 2 years ago you argued that cards like Divination should be targeted card draw. Can't the same logic be applied for cards like Banisher Priest, Chained to the Rock, and now Banishing Light? Or to put another way. Will we see cards in the new template that allow us to target our own permanents?

If you remember, I didn’t win the Divination fight.

Banishing Light Mechanics

New 17 Apr 2014 Asked by melleslob 25 Comments

Guys. Banishing Light was opponent's permanent to prevent infinite Constellation triggers that would be possible with Oblivion Ring. Mark's comment about making it easier for Magic Online is probably also true, but I feel like this is the proper answer. FYI.

Both are true.

Lenticular Design Considerations

New 17 Apr 2014 Asked by osisucks2000 29 Comments

Regarding two of the newly revealed cards: I can understand the rephrasing of both Brain Maggots and Banishing Light was necessary to avoid some fringe plays and rules oddities, but why isn't Banishing Light allowed to target your own permanents? Wouldn't that be a perfect example of lenticular design done right?

Development has been much more proactive about making cards such that you don’t accidentally hose yourself by misclicking on Magic Online
