Army of the Damned

Trivia: Grimgrin Corpse-Born

New 06 Jul 2020 Asked by baron-of-gold 72 Comments

It's my birthday! I'd like to invoke the rite of trivia about my first ever mythic rare I opened, Grimgrin Corpse-Born. Or Innistrad zombies in general.

The original plan was the “leader” of the zombies would just be Army of the Damned (the card that could make twenty-six zombie). The idea was that the zombies didn’t have a leader; they were just a lot of zombies. But set design felt there needed to be a legendary zombie, so they made one.Happy Birthday!

Innistrad Tribes Feedback

I can't really say I 'hate' a plane but my overall least liked plane is actually Innistrad. I love the lore and the look but mechanically I've only enjoyed the Vampire and Werewolf cards from both visits to the world. The other tribes have overall felt dull to me outside of a few cards for Commander.

You made the Zombies cry. Endless Rsnks of the Dead, Army of the Damned - you must just not like Zombies.

Zombie Tokens Appreciation

New 24 Dec 2017 Asked by hickorysbane 59 Comments

A friend of mine cast Army of the Damned and we had 13 different zombie tokens on hand for him to play. Very much a flavor win and something we've been waiting to be able to do. Can you give high fives to whoever was responsible for making so many zombie tokens on different planes?

Will do.

Black Color Trivia

It's my 21st birthday today, so any chance I can get some trivia about anything in my favorite color in Magic, Black?

Innistrad’s Army of the Damned used to male twenty Zombies and then you could flash it back to make twenty more. That was too good it playtesting so we lowered it to thirteen, a running theme of the set.Happy Birthday!

Grimgrin Trivia

Can I get some birthday trivia on my favorite card, Grimgrin, Corpse Born?

In design, we wanted a “big bad” for each of the monster types. The design team’s card to fill this void was Army of the Damned assuming the worst zombies is a giant horde of them. Development decided zombies should have a singular named “big bad” and made Grim Grim. Happy Birthday!

Its my birthday today! Can I have some trivia about Grimgrin, Corpse-Born?

In design, Army of the Damned was our design as the mythic zombie. The thought was the meanest, roughest zombie was a giant horde of zombies. Development decided they wanted a ;legendary zombie so Grimgrin was made during development.Happy Birthday!

Significance of 13

New 01 Feb 2014 Asked by neilius-blog 20 Comments

How do you decide seemingly arbitrary values in instances like Tragic Slip's -13/-13 effect or Army of the Damned's 13 Zombies or Into the Maw of Hell's 13 damage? Is 13 commonly used to represent a big number because it's perceived as an unlucky number, or does this come out of playtesting as an ideal choice in these cases?

13 was a theme of Innistrad because it’s a symbol of bad luck.

Token Generation Spell

New 23 Jan 2014 Asked by 3hip5me 18 Comments

Why do you think development vetoed a spell that makes 20 2/2 tokens when Army of the Damned can make 26?

I was talking about Army of the Damned. It was the spell which made 20 2/2’s and in design it also had flashback so it was actually capable of making 40 2/2s.

Gratitude for Card Design

New 29 Sep 2012 Asked by sakabatou314 11 Comments

Not a question, more of a "thanks for everything you do" with a story, since I know most of these cards are your designs. In a Magic Online standard game, thanks to Parallel Lives, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Army of the Damned, and Craterhoof Behomoth, I attacked my opponent for 5727 damage, and it was beautiful. My only regret was the other 52 of my 108/108 trampling zombies still having summoning sickness.

I enjoy stories like these.  Thanks.

Fluff aside, isn't Army of the Damned a green card?

Um, it makes a horde of zombies.

Zombie Deck Choices

New 13 Feb 2012 Asked by ketermuls 2 Comments

I have a choice between Zombie apocolypse and Army of the damned in my zombie deck. Which one should I choose?

It depends on what your deck does. Army of the Damned is a stronger card powerwise but Zombie Apocalypse is, well called Zombie Apocalypse so it wins on the flavor front. I found room for both in my zombie deck.

Rule of 5 Exception

New 01 Feb 2012 Asked by dukkhasatva 5 Comments

You have talked about your "Rule of 5" for cycles, how if one card deviates, at least 1 other card should deviate. Isn't Army of the Damned, by being a non-creature, violating that rule?

I don’t think of a card that creates 52 power worth of creatures as not counting as a creature.

Grimgrin's Creation Time

New 25 Jan 2012 Asked by dukkhasatva 0 Comments

At what point in Innistrad's design was Grimgrin made? Everybody seems to have forgotten Army of the Damned was actually "the Zombie mythic" because Grimgrin looks more in line with Olivia, Geist and Mikaeus. Do they have nothing to do with each other?

I believe Grimgrim was actually designed during development. The file turned in from design had Army of the Damned as the “zombie mythic”.

Flavor vs Playability

New 05 Sep 2011 Asked by badtoazt 2 Comments

I think you're doing a great job. So ignore the haters and keep doing what you're doing! To ask an actual question, do you try to make certain cards(such as planeswalkers, for example) tournament playable, or do you more orient them towards the flavor of the character/world/etc?

Design isn’t very concerned with power level. I’m trying to make cards that are flavorful and play well. For example, I pushed hard for the zombie tokens made by Army of the Damned to come into play tapped because I really wanted the flavor that this zombie horde is giant and oppressive but they’re still very slow. Development chose the cost and flashback cost for the spell that they thought was right.
