Yet Another Aether Vortex

Enchant Library Mechanics

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by drecon84 18 Comments

A previous question made me think: If I have Yet Another Aether Vortex out and Animate Library out, if there's an aura with enchant creature on top, does it count as enchanting my library creature or is it destroyed as a state-based action?

It’s destroyed. Having an enchantment on top is not the same thing as being enchanted.

Un-Rules Card Interactions

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by hyralc 28 Comments

An un-rules ruling(s) that came up in a game I really played recently. I have Another Aether Vortex. My opponent's library's top card is an Augment creature. There's a host on their battlefield. A. Can the augment attack since it kind of has stats? B. What if anything happens with the augment's abilities? C. Can it augment the host?

Augment cards function similar to auras. If they are somehow on the battlefield, but not attached to another permanent, they are destroyed by state based effects and go to the graveyard. If you have Yet Another Aether Vortex, you’ll get your turn over the top card of your library and if it’s a permanent, it will also be on the battlefield. And no, it will be too late to augment it to a host.

Library Bounce Conundrum

New 17 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 32 Comments

If I bounce my library (enchanted withm animate library) to the top ofg my library while yet another aether vortex is out (so it does not technically leave the battlefield) does my library have infinite cards in it now?

You can’t bounce your library to the top of your library. It’s already there essentially.

Acorn Rules Inquiry

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by acornquestions 61 Comments

Hey Mark, Acorn question: If I become a card due to my Form of the Approach of the Second Sun, do I have any rules? Can I cast myself with Future Sight (even if I stop being a card once I enter the stack, because I left my library)? Is there anything that I can do with myself being on the battlefield due to Yet Another Æther Vortex?

You don’t have rules text or a mana cost, but I have ruled you are a planeswalker. If you get onto the battlefield with Yet Another Aether Vortex, you’ll need something like Rules Lawyer to keep from being destroyed by having 0 loyalty.

Un-Rules Query

New 09 May 2023 Asked by debugamp-blog 35 Comments

Un-Rules question! If I cast Form of Approach of the Second Son and reveal myself with Yet Another Aether Vortex while Oath of Gideon is on the field, the copy myself with a Clone... is the Clone a player? Does it get a turn? Can you mindslaver the Clone? For that matter, if instead of cloning myself I were to cause myself to phase out, would I ever phase in again?

You can’t clone playerness.

Yes.

Self-Stick Strategy

If Form of the Approach of the Second Sun is making me a card, and I'm on the battlefield thanks to Yet Another Aether Vortex, can I sticker myself?

Assuming you have a means to survive with no loyalty, yes.

Player's Card Type

With form of the approach of the second sun and yet another aether vortex, what is the player's card type? Are we still supposed to be planeswalkers?

You are a planeswalker card when you become a card.

Loyalty and Physical Items

RE: Yet another Aether Vortex + Form of Approach of the Second Sun:
If I wear a shirt with a loyalty symbol of 10, does that count as having 10 loyalty? What about a tattoo since that's printed on me?

Sorry, neither grant you loyalty. You can play Rules Layer which will present the state-based effect that would remove you for having no loyalty.

Planeswalker Loyalty Mechanics

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by minoke5618 22 Comments

So, with Form of Second Sun, we're a planeswalker card. If I'm on top of my library, with Yet Another Aether Vortex around... wouldn't that make me a planeswalker with zero loyalty on the field and then I have to leave the field as a state-based action? Or do I not need loyalty to myself?

No, you will leave the battlefield, and thus the library, and thus stop being a card.

Players as Planeswalkers

New 07 Oct 2022 Asked by simicmimic 39 Comments

If players in libraries are planeswalker cards, does that mean players on the battlefield (perhaps from Yet Another Aether Vortex) can be the target of spells and abilities that target planeswalkers?

You can on the battlefield. Note if destroyed, that means you the card are destroyed, not you the player are destroyed.

Planeswalker Card Nuance

New 28 Sep 2022 Asked by radiocativek-tty-blog 34 Comments

If you somehow become a planeswalker card on the battlefield through yet another aether vortex + form of approach of the second sun, and a player casts a hero's downfall on you, do you lose the game since they're also "destroying a player"?

No. You stop being a card, but you don’t lose the game.

Form of the Second Sun

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by erfunk 111 Comments

If players are Planeswalkers by lore, and Form of the Approach of the Second Sun makes someone into a card, can we be interacted with by cards like Garth or Call the Gatewatch? Or if it's just flavor, then what do we taste like once we're a card?

The players are planeswalkers, so if you get made into a card by Form of the Approach of the Second Sun, you are a planeswalker card and can be interacted with as such. Note that if you leave the library or the library get shuffled, you stop being a card.Yes, many shenanigans can happen with Yet Another Aether Vortex (provided you find a way to not die to 0 loyalty).

Rules Compatibility of YAAV

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by silpheed-tandy 41 Comments

has the Rules Manager ever -- just as a thought experiment -- investigated if and how Yet Another Aether Vortex could work in black-border (assuming, of course, changes to the Comprehensive Rules), including weird edge cases and edge conflicts? or do they only put in that work if the change actually has to be done?

As the Un-Rules Manager that’s had to answer lots of YAAV questions over the years, it’s nowhere close to working in the normal rules. I’ve had former Rules Managers refuse to play with the card because it makes their head hurt.

Arena-Only Cards Border Color

New 30 Jul 2021 Asked by ceil420 27 Comments

Traditionally, cards that wouldn't work in paper's black border mechanics appeared with a silver border. Was any thought given to making the Arena-only cards silver bordered, to be used only in Jumpstart Historic Horizons or Direct Challenge? A lot of digital-only players were enjoying watching Historic grow into a format more like Pioneer or Modern, and unique cards irrevocably breaks us off that path. Just seems like a fine opportunity to introduce silver border to Arena was sadly squandered.

What constitutes silver border is a complex topic, but I think you’re talking about the cards that don’t work within the rules (like Yet Another Aether Vortex). The Arena-only mechanics can work in the black border rules. Arena couldn’t do them if they didn’t. The issue with them is practical logistics, not functionality.

Why is Yet Another Aether Vortex called that, anyways? What other Aether Vortexes was it making fun of?

Magic has tons of art of aether vortexes.

Melding Gisela and Bruna

New 24 Jul 2021 Asked by jeffsachs 31 Comments

Un-rules question. If I have Gisela on the battlefield with a Yet Another Aether Vortex active, and I draw for turn revealing Bruna. I assume they meld, but where does the melded creature go? On the battlefield? On the deck? Do I choose?

Gisela leaves the battlefield, so it gets melded with Bruna and you reveal the top card of your library, which if a permanent is now on the battlefield.

Psychic Network and Aeather Vortex

New 06 Jul 2021 Asked by gurrgleing 42 Comments

What happens when psychic network and yet another aether vortex are in play at the same time?

It gets weird. You can have permanents on the battlefield, but not be aware what they are. It’s kind of like how Illusionary Mask and Camouflage originally worked except it’s flipped in that everyone *but* you knows what it is.
