Winter Orb

Winter Moon Card Mechanic

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 6 Comments

Was it ever considered for winter moon to have the “as long as this is untapped” clause that winter orb has? I know that having it would make moon way stronger, but it feels like it would’ve added a chefs kiss to the call back. It’s not there wasn’t enough space on the card.

R&D, in general, is not a fan of artifacts that shut off when tapped, so it’s not something we tend to add to cards.

Orb Artifacts Theme

New 03 May 2024 Asked by phobias-pet-frog 44 Comments

If possible can I ask why there are several orb artifacts i.e. Winter, Torpor, Static, Mindlock, Dreams which have punishing/game stalling effects? What is it about orbs that makes them related to slower game states? Is it because they are following on the theme of Alpha's Winter Orb?

Magic has a history of something early doing something and then many cards following that flavor over the years.

Appreciation for Winter Moon

Hi Mark, Could you please send out many hi-fives to whomever was involved in Winter Moon? It made this old Winter Orb player very happy.

Will do.

Artifact Design Space

New 14 Jan 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 32 Comments

When/if: an artifact that "turns off" when it's tapped, like howling mine or winter orb? I know it's a holdover from old rules about continuous artifacts, but I wonder if there's any potential design space with it.

If. It’s not particularly fruitful design space.

Enchantment Niches

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by snescontroller 53 Comments

Glass Casket has me concerned. It feels like, ever since colored artifacts became an every-set thing, there just aren't that many mechanical niches for enchantments anymore. Artifacts get to also be creatures, cost generic mana, have tap abilities... the list goes on. The only thing enchantments can do that artifacts can't is attach to objects other than creatures you control.

Artifacts have had global effects since the game began back in Alpha (Ankh of Mishra, Black Lotus, Copper Tablet, Dingus Egg, Gauntlet of Might, Howling Mine, Kormus Bell, Meekstone, Sunglasses of Urza, and Winter Orb). The change is we’re allowing artifacts to have colored mana costs (and even this we’ve done for over ten years - just not at the current levels). This means the overlap between artifacts and enchantments, which has always been there, is a little more noticeable. The color pie is determined by the mana cost of the card, so if white can do something as an enchantment, it means it can do it as an artifact, The result of this is we have to lean a little more on the flavor to help make them feel different from one another.

Do you know who designed Winter Orb?

I assume Richard Garfield. It was in Alpha.

Birthday Card Trivia

New 08 Dec 2018 Asked by baron-von-lucas 22 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday and I was hoping for some birthday triva on the card dueling grounds, winter orb or Estrid, thank you!

Winter Orb is one of few cards in existence that got functional errata that stayed because we printed it on far more cards than the un-errataed version. The reason the Alpha version didn’t need “If this is untapped” is because back then all artifacts turned off when tapped.
Happy Birthday!

Ankh Errata Explanation

New 05 Dec 2018 Asked by averywittyname 35 Comments

Why doesn't ankh of mishra have the same "as long as ~ is untapped" oracle wording like howling mine and winter orb?

When Sixth Edition rules got rid of the “tapped artifacts don’t work rule”, we errataed a few artifacts used a lot in tournament play to have the “if untapped” text. When those cards got reprinted they used the new text.
Eventually, R&D adopted a rule where we stopped doing functional errata when possible, so we removed the “if untapped” text where we could. Unfortunately some cards had been reprinted with the new text and far more of those existed in print, so on those few cards we kept the “if untapped” text.

Trivia on Unstable Cards

New 08 Dec 2017 Asked by baron-von-lucas 36 Comments

It's my birthday! Any triva on winter orb or animate library?

Animate Library was the last card added to Unstable. I’d designed it long ago and during a development playtest, I remembered it and right then and there added it to the file. Happy Birthday!

Rising Waters Origins

New 10 Apr 2017 Asked by elmikkino 16 Comments

Hey Mark, yesterday was my birthday but I forgot to ask until now! Any trivia on Rising Waters or Shah of Naar Isle?

Rising Waters came about because we decided Winter Orb wasn’t an effect all the colors were supposed to get. We felt it was supposed to be a blue enchantment, so we made it one.Happy Birthday!

Spectral Searchlight Clarification

New 09 Apr 2017 Asked by thedoublemint 32 Comments

Would you like to see Spectral Searchlight get errata to restore its mana burn functionality? Winter Orb recently got errata to restore its continuous artifact functionality.

Spectral Searchlight never had mana burn functionality. The game at the time it came out had mana burn functionality.

Card Trivia Birthday

It's my birthday today! Any triva you can share on the cards winter orb, dueling grounds, bottle gnomes or hedron crab?

The original flavor text of Bottle Gnomes from Tempest is one of my favorite. The writers were each assigned characters and I wrote Ertai and Karn. I decided I wanted Karn to be a fan of parables. Happy Birthday!

Hydras Iconic Color Shift

It's my birthday today! Any triva you can share on winter orb, dueling grounds, or hydra's?

It took us a while to consider Hydras as Green’s iconic because Richard had originally put the first one (Rock Hydra) in Red and inertia is strong. We finally tried it because everything else we tried had failed.Hydras luckily worked.Happy Birthday!

Winter Orb Errata

New 05 Nov 2016 Asked by blue-hijinx-deactivated20181204 29 Comments

What makes the functional errata of Winter Orb okay compared to making the nephilim legendary? Many people were kinda disappointed they weren't made legendary this year, seeing as it was the perfect time to do so.

When Winter Orb was published, and for the vast majority of its life, it did turn off when tapped. We made the change to avoid changing the functionality it’s been played with for almost the run of its existence.

Winter Orb Errata

New 28 May 2016 Asked by neraciro 27 Comments

MaRo, you've made it clear that you avoid functional errata whenever possible. So why is it that Winter Orb received errata in Eternal Masters? It doesn't include the "only when untapped" condition either in the Gatherer or on the original card.

It did have it on the original card because it was baked into the rules.

Nephilim and Functional Errata

New 27 May 2016 Asked by thegraylemon 48 Comments

Now that Winter Orb has shown us that Wizards can in fact do functional errata, can we have legendary nephilim? (And the "original functionality" excuse for Winter Orb doesn't fly unless all the old continuous artifacts are changed)

Because when we break a rule once, it doesn’t mean the rule has no meaning and we’re willing to break it repeatedly. Also, there might be something for lovers of four-color commanders later in the year.

Profile of Griefers

New 03 Sep 2014 Asked by commandersredzone 33 Comments

There is a portion of the MtG community that get the most enjoyment out of the game if they are causing others to be miserable: ie Sinkhole, Counterspell, Winter Orb, etc...what profile do they fit?

Most griefers are Timmy but there are Johnny and Spike griefers.

Waiting on Specific Mechanics

New 17 Jul 2014 Asked by aazadan 50 Comments

With the pendulum of the game focus always swinging I am impatiently biding my time waiting for the winter orb/fateseal/manaless alternate casting cost block to come around. How many more years do you think I'll have to wait?

You have a while. I’m not planning on retiring any time soon.

Winter Orb Errata

New 13 May 2014 Asked by alsadius-blog-blog 10 Comments

Why was "if untapped" considered functional errata on Winter Orb? That was text specifically designed to keep its original functionality.

But that rule wasn’t card functionality but game functionality. Are things with protection from Alpha supposed to work how protection worked during the time of Alpha?

Winter Orb Text Reversion

New 13 May 2014 Asked by transsalamander 9 Comments

In your article today you mentioned that both Howling Mine and Winter Orb got errata to read "if this is untapped." Howling Mine definitely was, but Winter Orb doesn't say that on Gatherer. What gives?

Once we decided to stop doing functional errata, we went back and undid any functional errata change we had done. The one exception was on cards where we had printed the new rules text on cards. Thus, Howling Mine, which had been reprinted, kept the new wording while Winter Orb, which had not, was reverted to its original text.
