System Return Query

New 19 Jul 2020 Asked by suigenyukiouji 31 Comments

Would R&D ever consider returning the system where normal cards had the reminder text, but foils did not? Tenth edition Time Stop comes to mind first, and I'd love to see that feature return, especially for cards like Throes of Chaos or Glorious End that have short rules text but very long reminder text.

It requires the layout people to double their work. It didn’t turn out to be worth the huge work increase.

Core Set Legends Correction

New 29 Jun 2020 Asked by elvish-mysticcc 37 Comments

Not to nitpick, but you say in today's article that no core set from Alpha through Magic 2014 had any legendary creatures, but Tenth Edition had 10 reprinted ones and Magic 2013 had a whole cycle (that notably introduced fan-favorite characters Odric and Krenko). Very informative article on the whole though!

Oops. My mistake.

Foil Card Complexity

New 16 May 2018 Asked by pouncingkavu 41 Comments

Hi Mark! I was just reminded how in Tenth Edition, foils had no reminder text and sometimes had secret flavor text. I thought this was an awesome compromise for veteran players who could have access to more elegant versions of their favorite cards. Why wasn't this practice continued? I would expect it to be a popular decision.

It turned out to be a huge amount of work for our production team and it was deemed not worth it for the effort required.

Storm Crow's Limited Play

New 04 Mar 2018 Asked by zuranorbiter 45 Comments

For the record Storm Crow was pretty reasonable in limited in tenth edition because of the low power level and lack of flying. That second toughness was good against pingers too. Not a top pick but playable.

I’ll go out on a limb and say Masters 25 has a higher power level in limited than Tenth Edition. : )

Cycle Card Trivia

New 12 Jan 2018 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 24 Comments

Cards that were in multiple distinct cycles: Leyline of the Void (Guildpact and M11), Renewed Faith (Onslaught and Amonkhet), and many of the legends in tenth edition were originally part of cycles.

Tenth Edition Gimmick

New 26 Feb 2015 Asked by bigtallhouse-deactivated2018070 26 Comments

The gimmick for Tenth Edition was "Back in Black," the return of black bordered core set cards. (Former retailer, here.)

That is correct. Part of fitting a whole year in a single podcast is I miss things.

Content in Premium

New 28 Sep 2014 Asked by legendofdrag-blog-blog 12 Comments

"The only set where there is original content in the premium version is Unhinged" I definitely remember some tenth edition foils having flavor text that the regular versions did not have, since they didn't need to make room for rules text.

I was talking unique content in the foil itself not just on premium cards.

Foil Card Text

New 03 May 2014 Asked by wotkay-deactivated20151219 9 Comments

Can we please have no reminder text on foil cards? It was a welcome change in Tenth Edition and I was surprised and disappointed that it didn't continue in Lorwyn.

The problem is it’s a huge amount of work for our production people (basically twice the work) so it was decided that the benefit didn’t outweigh the cost.

Core Set Naming Shift

New 21 Feb 2014 Asked by elandt14-deactivated20220313 36 Comments

Why did they switch from calling core sets "X Edition" to "Magic 20XY?"

We found “Tenth Edition” to be intimidating to new players as it emphasized how much of the game they’ve already missed.

Early Core Sets

New 06 Oct 2013 Asked by arkvinin 5 Comments

Retroactively, would you consider Alpha thru Tenth Edition to be core sets?

We referred to them as core sets before Magic 2010 came out.

Legendary Core Sets

New 13 Jul 2013 Asked by theboonslayer 3 Comments

You said that a legendary 5-color Sliver would be only the 6th Legendary card in Core Set History, but I have to call you on that. There were 11 in Tenth Edition, and on top of the 5 creatures in M13, there was also Akroma's Memorial. That makes 17 legendary cards before the legendary Sliver.

Yeah, I forgot about the legendary creatures in Tenth Edition.

Lifelink Definition Debate

New 07 May 2013 Asked by ingenkhoobor 15 Comments

"Lifelink has never done that." No, It DID do that; it doesn't do that NOW. It was errata'd. Why is it okay to errata lifelink to be a rider on damage when it was originally a triggered ability, but not okay to say it is functional errata? Tenth Edition Loxodon Warhammer demonstrates the "old" version.

No, Spirit Link did that. Lifelink did not and never has.

Removing Reminder Text

New 27 Nov 2012 Asked by singerofw 3 Comments

Speaking of removing reminder text from rare cards, you did remove it from foils rares in Tenth Edition. Any chance of you doing this again?

It was something we tried as an experiment. It turned out it was a lot of work internally and was only slightly popular so we’ve decided it’s not something we plan to repeat in the near future.

Planeswalking Rules

New 03 Jul 2012 Asked by lordofthefountain 4 Comments

I have only been playing Magic since about Tenth edition, so I wasn't around during Yawgmoth. I just saw a question about him, so I decided to look him up. During my reading, I noticed that the Planeswalker Dyfed "took" him from Dominaria to Phyrexia. Yet in one of the books about Jace, it is mentioned that it is impossible to take another person with you while Planeswalking. So is it, or is it not possible to take someone with you while Planeswalking?

The nature of planeswalking changed massively during the Time Spiral storyline, so what once could happen and what can happen now are not the same thing.

Innistrad and Time Spiral

New 05 May 2012 Asked by lozipop 4 Comments

i just came back into the game after leaving in tenth edition, and i must say, that innistrad is one of the best blocks i have played, and was actually the reason i got interested in the game. that said, i still really love time spiral. what are the chances that we will see some of those characters or even mechanics in the future?

Innistrad has done very well so many of the facets of the block could very well be revisited in the future.

Foil Text Decision

New 11 Mar 2012 Asked by nomoremonkis-blog-blog 0 Comments

The lack of reminder text on Tenth Edition foils was a very nice touch (and makes Time Stop look VERY impressive). What was the reasoning behind the decision, and why wasn't it reused?

It was something we tried because we thought players would like it. And they did. The reason we didn’t repeat it was that it ended up being a lot more work than we realized for our production department. Every set has different costs we have to balance (time as well as money) and in the end it wasn’t worth the cost to repeat it. That doesn’t mean that we’ll never do it again but we didn’t want to establish it as a regular thing.
