Card Compatibility with Force of Will

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by elmdormesdoram 7 Comments

One with Nothing is the strongest card in the game, but it has a huge problem: it can't be pitched to Force of Will! Can we have a version of that effect that costs U/B (hybrid)?

I don’t believe every card needs to be pitched to Force of Will. : )

Lose-Format Naming

A friend and I are working on the banlist for a format where the goal is to lose; what should we call the format?

One with Nothing. : )

Designing One with Nothing

New 23 Feb 2024 Asked by godkingjinping 57 Comments

What was the thought process in designing one with nothing

I believe Brian Tinsman was trying to make a card so bad it would force people to ask questions about it on blogs. : )

Upcoming Weird Cards

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by tel-stories-blog 31 Comments

Not that yall design for it but any "weird" card effects with similar vibes to One With Nothing in the pipeline for next year?

There are weird cards coming, but not quite in the One With Nothing category.

Weird Card Purpose

New 27 Nov 2023 Asked by puresmoulder 34 Comments

Will we ever get more one-off weird cards that don't have a clear purpose like in the 90s and early 2000s?
One With Nothing and stuff like that.

Every card we make has a purpose, even One with Nothing. That said, we make significantly more “odd cards that do weird things” now than we made in the 90’s.

One With Nothing Joke

New 12 Jun 2023 Asked by mrmoustachemm 109 Comments

I thought One With Nothing was a fixed Black Lotus. Lion's Eye Diamond was too strong, even with discarding your hand, so you removed the "generates 3 mana" part and made it cost 1 mana. One With Nothing is much fairer! : )

I hadn’t thought of it like that. : )

No Upgrade for One With Nothing

New 08 Feb 2022 Asked by project-two-five-zero-one 104 Comments

Why do we get a strictly better version of Mirror Gallery, but not an updated version of One With Nothing?

We can’t improve upon One With Nothing. : )

Reprinting Black Border Joke Cards

New 14 Sep 2021 Asked by meepingmerps 33 Comments

Could you reprint black border “joke” cards (storm crow, one with nothing, etc) in un-sets?

Steamflogger Boss was in Unstable, although it had to be on the land sheet.

Cost Suggestion for One with Nothing

What about if One With Nothing cost 0 and also added B?

Now you’re just getting greedy, A 0 cost spell that adds B is problematic.

One With Nothing Costing Zero

Do you think One With Nothing would be broken if it cost 0 mana?

Broken? Unlikely.

On Cards That Don't Work Alone

New 05 Sep 2020 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 37 Comments

"Players assume cards can work on their own" - historically, though, you've printed a number of cards that *don't* work on their own. Not every set, but every once in a while. Force of Savagery, for instance, dies immediately when cast if you don't have the appropriate support. One with Nothing is another example of a card that on paper, is strictly downside.

And we do those kinds of cards very infrequently.

Kamigawa Set Complexity

New 26 May 2020 Asked by ghostlygideon 56 Comments

Reading your complexity article, as a relatively new player during Kamigawa you're right, I thought I must be misunderstanding One With Nothing. I can think of various uses for it now, but none from Kamigawa itself. How did it end up in the set? Seems it would've been more at home in Dissension to fuel Hellbent.

It was a Brian Tinsman specisl that he kept in the set through pure force of will.

Runaways Magic Reference

New 11 Jan 2020 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 51 Comments

Magic Pop Culture in the wild: Season 3, Episode 8 of Marvel's Runaways on Hulu, Alex Wilder says "It's not like I played a 'One With Nothing' card and got myself mind-flayered," and then tries to explain it as a Magic reference when nobody gets it.

Cool.

Philosophical Flavor

New 25 Jan 2019 Asked by werepirelord 30 Comments

Could you consider "One with Nothing" a flavor fail, given that Buddhist philosophy of the loss of the concept of self revolves around literal "selflessness" - becoming attuned with nature and reality as a whole, which seems diametrically opposed to the self-serving black?

One could do many things. I do not consider it a flavor fail.

Reprint One with Nothing

New 27 Sep 2018 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 94 Comments

Ravnica seems like a good place for a reprint of One with Nothing. It works well with graveyard strategies from Golgari, empty hand strategies from Rakdos, possibly other strategies too.

Were you just sitting around thinking, “How could I help ensure Maro gets a lot of angry mail”? : ) Okay, more than normal.

One With Nothing Usage

"every card will get played by someone", Token follow up question: even One With Nothing?

That was played at a Pro Tour (in a sideboard).

Weird Cards Frequency

New 04 Nov 2017 Asked by phyrexiathings 42 Comments

I like "weird" cards like the 8/0 and one with nothing. What is the storm scale for those types of cards?

We still do them but at a low frequency. If you like weird cards, check out Unstable this December.

One With Nothing Rarity

New 04 Apr 2015 Asked by qowry 35 Comments

If you would reprint One With Nothing, do you think it would still be at rare?

You want to make it mythic rare? It has no function in limited so it wouldn’t be common or uncommon.

One with Nothing Utility

New 03 Jan 2015 Asked by akroandisciple-blog-deactivated 43 Comments

Have you, the king of Johnnys, figured out One with Nothing? Or is it as useless as everyone I talk to says?

It got sideboarded at a Pro Tour so possibly not the worst card in all of Magic. : )

Mudhole Reception

New 21 Jul 2014 Asked by aazadan 11 Comments

Was Mudhole initially received worse than One With Nothing?

No, but I didn’t make One With Nothing. That was a Brian Tinsman creation.
