March of the Machine: The Aftermath

Aftermath Planning Insights

re: MKM Aftermath. Was the decision to not execute on it made before or after MAT failed so spectacularly?

We wanted to do an Aftermath for the next Magic year, and started by asking what set should have it. We then came to the conclusion that it should be the last set in the “Magic year”. All of that happened before March of the Machine: Aftermath came out.

Planeswalker Feedback

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by thatdude2 117 Comments

It's been (almost) one year since Mom. One year since the desparking and the omenpaths. And i have to say.... i'm just as unhappy about it as i was back then. Omenpaths so far have been used or for Kellan's travel (in which he dosen't act different from a planeswalker) and for the villian mash-up of thunder junction. Desparking meant throwing away the core cast of characters you built for the last 10+ years. What has come to replace them? Nothing. Kellan settling down after less than a year of introducing him removes any chances of him being the start of something new. All in all i feel like you broke something that was special about the IP (planeswalkers) and all the work you did in getting players attached to them. For slightly different planeswalkers and a set that feels like an online game battlepass.I'm not one for undoing the consequences of events, because they take away from the stakes of the future ones. But if this is what we get in exchange for the characters we spent time with for all these years.... i'd be happy to have an event set be a "second sundering" to MAT "spellplague".

How do others feel about this?

Game Draw Mechanic

New 16 Feb 2024 Asked by aalgot 32 Comments

If/when ”if the game would be a draw, you mat draw a card instead.”

If. We don’t want to incentivize trying to make draws happen. Also, drawing a card mostly doesn’t undo the factors making the game a draw.

Rating Aftermath Set

Do we not get to rate March of the Machine: The Aftermath?

I’ve seen the data. It was hated.

Set Expectations

New 02 Aug 2023 Asked by thetitan555 40 Comments

Some feedback on Aftermath, "a set without commons". The experience I wanted from Aftermath was "a set without duds", where every card is pushed and the power of each card justifies the lack of a limited environment. What I wanted from MAT was a 'standard horizons', and what we got was basically another set's worth of uncommons, rares, and mythics, duds and all. Expectations vs reality, I suppose.

Pushing every card in a set is how you get power creep.

Convoke and Madness

New 09 May 2023 Asked by pedrofeliperocha 41 Comments

That card with convoke and madness from MAT reminded me of Modern Horizons design... but inside of a premier set! What exactly made something like that possible? Ps: madness is love.. please, please, please give us more!

We allowed March of the Machine: The Aftermath to have a bit more splashing of nonevergreen mechanics. We’re still figuring out what the rules for a product like it should be.

Thematic Consistency Query

New 09 May 2023 Asked by wehavenotbeenchosen 30 Comments

Hi Mark,
Just read through MoM Vision design handoff 1/2, thanks for keeping us in the loop with behind the scenes as always.
Was it thought that it would be thematically dissonant to have a set called March of the Machine where the Machine are already outnumbered cards-wise? This makes me think that between DMU, ONE, MOM and MAT, the full invasion itself should have started earlier, rather than being resolved all within one set.

The Phyrexians weren’t outnumbered in the actual fight. Only a third of the cards were Phyrexian in March of the Machine because we just had a whole Phyrexian set (Phyrexia: All Will Be One) and there was more on the denizens of the planes side that was interesting to show on cards.

Article Delay Query

No Making Magic today?Side note, could there be some kind of notice on Daily MTG when your article is delayed?

This week’s article is a March of the Machine: The Aftermath preview article, and it goes up tomorrow morning. I’m not sure where to put a note about it being delayed.

Mechanical Changes Tease

New 10 Apr 2023 Asked by stellae-in-caelis 61 Comments

Now that MOM has been completely revealed, what did you and/or wotc have in mind when teasing the "big mechanical changes" in store?

Let’s talk after my preview article on March of the Machine: The Aftermath. It’s after my three-part series on battles.

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by frankinho008 57 Comments

Hi Mark, just saw the Wizards Presents showcase and I am officially hyped for the next year. Just one question, the picture showed 3 premier sets for 23 with Lost Caverns being released in 24 - assuming March of the Machine: the Aftermath is Marathon Epilogue?

The four normal premier sets in 2023:- All Will Be One- March of the Machine- Wilds of Eldraine- Lost Caverns of IxalanMarch of the Machine Aftermath is a new kind of thing (and yes, was previously referred to as epilogue).

Happy Birthday, Mark! I met you at Hascon, where we got a picture and you signed my Grimlok mat. I also remember you taking time out of your day (multiple times) to answer fan questions in the rest lounge. Thanks for your dedication and drive for the game and the community!

You may. Just send a self-addressed envelope big enough and with enough postage for me to get it back to you.
