Knight of the White Orchid

Land Search and Play Mechanic

New 26 Jun 2021 Asked by hugsandambitions 42 Comments

Hey Mark! There's quite a few cards like Wood Elves that search for a Forest and puts it into play, and Knight of the White Orchid that searches for Plains and puts it into play. Could Islands, Mountains, or Swamps be individually named and put into play? I know there are cards that get any land, I'm asking if those three subtypes could be specifically named and put into play on a single ability. If so, what color would that ability be?

There are cards with landcycling that do that in each of those colors.

Land Fetching Preference

Would The Birth of Meletis get you any Plains and not just a basic, had it been printed in a Standard without shocklands? (like Knight of the White Orchid did)

We’re pushing more towards fetching getting basics.

Land Tax Comparison

How is Land Tax a break when Knight of the White Orchid isn't?

White can, on rare occasion, search for plains. It can’t search for any basic land.

White Card Draw Limits

If Balance is white, than why wouldn't Antibalance be as well? Is White mass destruction not solely justified through the pursuit of equality? Perhaps Knight of the White Orchid style card advantage would be a good solution for White card advantage.

White is supposed to be bad at card draw.

Tithe Effects Status

Are tithe-like effects (land tax, Knight of the white orchid, etc.) still in White's color pie or are they bends?

They’re bends. We let every color have a little access to its own basic land type.

Mana In Colors

New 16 Apr 2013 Asked by sarroth 6 Comments

If searching for basic lands of the type that produces mana in your color is something any color can do, a la Knight of the White Orchid and Kor Cartographer in white and Corpse Harvester and Liliana's Shade in black, might we see cards in blue and red that do this (other than the land cycling cards from Alara block)?

It’s not something blue and red get to do much of. The example of when we do let them use it is for cycles like landcycling.
