Can I have birthday trivia on my favorite card Goblin Test Pilot? Also if or when on a reprint

I previewed Goblin Test Pilot in my “Tales from the Pit” comic. The only time, I believe, I’ve ever done that.Happy Birthday!

Goblin Test Pilot Query

Why wasn't Goblin Test Pilot given the Pilot subtype when Kaladesh came out?

Because he can’t crew anything. : )

Comedy in Sets

New 02 Dec 2014 Asked by philbratcher 51 Comments

How do you feel about comedic cards in non-comedic sets? By that I mean cards that are generally wacky (like Goblin Test Pilot).

I feel all sets can have some comedy. It just has to fit the world and tone of the set.

"But then I fall asleep in meetings and you get Goblin Test Pilot. : )" You say that like Goblin Test Pilots are a bad thing.

I meant it as a positive thing.

Importance of Sleep

New 15 Nov 2014 Asked by aazadan 40 Comments

As someone who likes entwine and greatly enjoys the work you come up with while sleeping I wonder, how can I lobby for you to get more time to sleep? Not enough sleep means fewer mechanics like entwine.

But then I fall asleep in meetings and you get Goblin Test Pilot. : )

Sleep-Inspired Design

You need to double down on this. Between Goblin test Pilot and entwine you're not far from making sleeping one of your official duties and thereby solving your perpetual sleep shortage.

I’ve run out of time during the day to do Magic design, so I’ve had to turn to sleep. : )

Goblin Test Pilot Origins

Do you know who was responsible for Goblin Test Pilot? It's such a beautiful card [can even accidentally kill himself!] and I want to know who to thank.

That would be me. I literally dreamt it up. : )

Variance Card Role

New 30 Jul 2014 Asked by aetylus 18 Comments

I tried asking you this question earlier, but maybe it required too much to write so going to try again but phrased more simply since I'm honestly really curious. As a designer, do you think cards that have random, chance-based mechanics, such as Goblin Test Pilot, should have a role in card sets or are they mainly just gimmicky fun things? Would a strong, competitively-viable, chance-based card negatively effect Magic?

We tend to make the super high variance cards of a lower power level as to not be key players in high-level tournament Magic. We learned this by having cards in the past that were high variance and tournament viable. (Frenetic Efreet, I’m looking at you.)

Silliness Comparison

New 17 Jul 2014 Asked by mackeytwins 21 Comments

Is Questing Phelddagrif sillier than Goblin Test Pilot, Hot Soup, or Goblin Kaboonist?

Goblins have a humorous element built into their design. The game does get to have humor. A flying purple hippo was crafted to be silly for the sake of being silly in contrast. Hot Soup, by the way, was an exception made because it was one of the outside designer cards.

Goblin Test Pilot Origin

It was my birthday on march 31st, I was wondering if I can have some late birthday trivia on goblin test pilot?

I fell asleep in a meeting and woke up with this card idea. Hmm, maybe I need to sleep in more meetings. Or less. Happy birthday!

Goblin Test Pilot Logic

Why Goblin Test Pilot has "or player" ? Choosing random players and creatures at the same time is very difficult to execute.

Just assign a different land for each player and have the opponent pick a card.

NWO and Random Events

New 12 Feb 2014 Asked by chiefleper 22 Comments

Weird random chance events (like goblin test pilot) where you can't flip a coin or roll a die to choose; shouldn't these be against the NWO?

New World Order is about complexity at common so Goblin Test Pilot, an uncommon, has nothing to do with NWO.

Varchild's War-Riders Designer

New 07 Jul 2013 Asked by emersonesq 6 Comments

Who designed Varchild's War-Riders? It is my favorite card, my many orders of magnitude, and I'd love to get my playset signed by the designer. As a side-note Goblin Test Pilot is my second favorite, would you be willing to sign my collection of ~160?

It was made by a member of the design team so either Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty or Chris Page.

Fan Deduction Praise

Did you hear about the guy on r/magicTCG who deduced the ability of Goblin Test Pilot from the picture?

I did. That’s the sign of some good creative and a smart fan.

Surprising Cards

New 29 Apr 2013 Asked by rageofstoneclan 11 Comments

Are there any cards that have been printed that you are surprised made it thru development?

There are lots and lots of cards that surprised me they made it through development. In Dragon’s Maze, I was honestly pleasantly surprised that Goblin Test Pilot made it all the way through.

Goblin Test Pilot

New 26 Apr 2013 Asked by dingodreams-deactivated20160306 6 Comments

Many people are in love with Goblin Test Pilot (I am among them) but it's been agreed upon that he'd be even more fun with haste. Being summoned and then possibly blowing up immediately. Was he hasty at any point in development? If so, why was it removed? If not, why not? Answers, Maro, answers.

Only so many cards get haste and it didn’t need it. Remember that pretty much every creature is better with haste.

Game Diversity Recognition

New 19 Apr 2013 Asked by fonz85 11 Comments

MaRo, I just wanted to thank you for being an awesome WotC public face, for listening to us and for being open and understanding. That said, I now see what you mean when you mention Magic is a different game for different people. Someone mentioned on a previous post the Goblin Test Pilot. When I first saw it I thought "Awesome! This will be hilarious on the kitchen table!" While a lot of people thought "Ugh! This clearly won't win a GP!" Different cards for different people. Simple as that.

I know the old timers get sick of me saying again and again that Magic is many different games under the same umbrella but it’s important that everyone understands that the health of the game is based a lot on the fact that there are so many different ways to play.

Goblin Test Pilot's Target

New 14 Apr 2013 Asked by totheendofsin-blog 3 Comments

What happens if Goblin Test Pilot's ability lands on a creature with shroud?

It cannot as it can’t be “seen” by Goblin Test Pilot and thus never chosen.

Goblin Test Pilot Feedback

New 14 Apr 2013 Asked by zok72 10 Comments

I know you've gotten a lot of negative feedback on goblin test pilot but I would like to add my voice to the mix. I appreciate a random effect, I appreciate a weird card, and I want to like goblin test pilot, but I just think that it's way too week. The card has the same flavor, randomness, and Johnny appeal if it only targets opposing targets, and that effect is hardly strong or overpriced (compare to izzit staticaster which was okay but not great in limited). Why not the better, more fun card?

The reason it’s not stronger is that most Spikes hate having this type of card matter in high level tournament play. “If I win the flip, I win the tournament” is not something they want to ever say.

Izzet's Creature Focus

New 14 Apr 2013 Asked by rivercrab 5 Comments

I don't intend to speak for everybody, but what personally disappointed me about Goblin Test Pilot is that I had been waiting to see how the worst creature colors (that is, Izzet) found its representation in a more creature-centric design environment, and the designs have been underwhelming on the competitive front. I was hoping we would see more of the creatures that make UR decks work - and while GTP is flavorful and, well, fun, I don't think it's representative of the potential of the colors.

Izzet’s schtick is that it’s the least creature-centered of the ten guilds.
