Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

Gruul Precon Query

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by awes0meguy22 28 Comments

My roommate is obssessed (for some reason) with the idea that you personally made a Raccoon the commander of the Gruul Bloomburrow Precon. Did you actually work on these decks?

I worked on the set (Doug Beyer lead vision design and Ian Duke led set design), but not the Commander decks.

Bloomburrow Trivia

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by elderaktis 44 Comments

The moon is high, the altar is lit, and I invoke the ancient and unholy rite of birthday trivia.I'd like to know some trivia (no matter how small or vague) that we don't already know about Bloomburrow. If that's too far out, then please do Outlaws of Thunder Junction instead.

The lead vision designer for Bloomburrow is Doug Beyer (from the creative team). The lead set design is Ian Duke. I really think everyone hit it out of the ballpark. It’s my personal favorite set of the year. Happy Birthday!

Planeswalking Vs. Teleporting Differences

New 07 Mar 2022 Asked by sniccups63 69 Comments

Re: planeswalking vs. teleporting. I believe it *is* possible to planeswalk to another part of the same plane, just very, very difficult. In fact, the Wanderer does it in the NEO story! Also, years ago when Doug Beyer still used his blog, he said that Nicol Bolas could probably do it, and that he liked it as an ability for villains.

As always, I was explaining the default. It is possible for an individual planeswalker to have abilities that let them do something most planeswalkers can’t.

Will do.

Role of Non-Planeswalkers

New 05 Jun 2021 Asked by sententiamaxim 39 Comments

In your podcast with Doug Beyer on "War of the Spark," it focused on planeswalkers, but I'm wondering how non-planeswalkers like Niv-Mizzet factored into the design or story? How important was Niv in development, especially considering his popularity? Did his 5-color avatar version emerge as a side note or afterthought? Or did it develop in tandem with the larger storyline?

The legendary creatures were more handled card by card in set design.

Trivia about Gatherer

New 09 Apr 2021 Asked by charitycharicola 38 Comments

Mark, I am now older than I've ever been before. Do you have any trivia Gatherer?

Gatherer was first programmed as a side project by Doug Beyer. Before he worked on the creative team, he worked in online media. Happy Birthday!

Birthday Trivia Request

New 19 Dec 2020 Asked by davethegame 51 Comments

Hey Mark, it’s my birthday and I’d like to ask for some trivia about anything this year that you’re proud of.

I think Jumpstart is the coolest product we made in 2020. Doug Beyer came up with the idea and it was part of the first Hackathon (the same thing where Modern Horizons came from). It took a while to make it because of printing challenges. Happy Birthday!

Xenakis Character Confirmation

New 10 Dec 2020 Asked by merelyfantastic 43 Comments

Referring to a previous question from someone else, we've already had a Legendary Creature with an ignited spark in Xenagos, God of Revels (unless the lore has changed, but it was confirmed at the time buy Doug Beyer and others that he was still a planeswalker after ascending).

That is correct. Xenakis was a special case because we had to convey him becoming a God and there was a preset way to show that.

Appreciation for the Jumpstart

New 21 Jun 2020 Asked by interrogatemarcus 54 Comments

Just wanted to give you my thumbs up for Jumpstart. The base concept seems quite accessible for newer players, while the card pool is desirable for enfranchised ones. Well done!

The thanks should go to Doug Beyer and the vision design and Set design teams.

Lore Contact Point

New 11 Jan 2020 Asked by sourmilktables-deactivated20220 33 Comments

who is someone we can ask about these sorts of things? I remember a year or two ago there was a staffer on Tumblr who was involved with the lore but they seem to have stopped updating.

That was Doug Beyer, and he doesn’t post anymore.

Doug Beyer has a Tumblr, but he has regularly answered it in a long time.

Phyrexian Language Details

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by leaffolkshaman 51 Comments

In November 2010, an article by Doug Beyer called continuum said “There's more on the Phyrexian language, but I'm not cleared to share all the details yet. Let's let Mirrodin get Besieged a little more, first. But there's this whole binder, guys. I've seen the thing. It has a list of handy phrases. Amazing.” Do you know where I can find that?

We’ve never made it public.

Official Lore Tumblr

New 13 May 2019 Asked by jspencer93 54 Comments

Not an official one. Technically, Doug Beyer has a Tumblr, but he updates infrequently.

Praise for Bolas Arc

New 18 Apr 2019 Asked by gatvin 51 Comments

If you could, high-five Doug Beyer if you get the chance. There were rough spots, but overall, the Bolas Arc has really stuck the landing. I'm generally critical when a work is in progress, but seeing the final product, I'm quite happy.

I’ll let him know.

War Story Origin

New 08 Apr 2019 Asked by st-orzhovius 54 Comments

Out of curiosity who was in charge of initial storybuilding for War? And who pitched the telling the story of the events through spoilers idea?

Doug Beyer was the architect of the Bolas Arc. He was also the one that pitched the chronological preview.

Segovia Scale Issues

New 23 Feb 2019 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 35 Comments

RE: segovia - according to an article written by doug beyer in 2009 people who travel to the plane are automatically shrunk down to segovian scale (1:100). the existence of the card segovian leviathan would then make one assume that creatures which are summoned from segovia don't scale up? all of this is somewhat confusing and completely ruins a key plot point in my segovia based romantic fanfiction.

Okay, I’d trust Doug.
