Control Effects Balance

New 16 May 2024 Asked by j-waffles 2 Comments

Is there a reason most donate and exchange control effects, especially in recent years, only do creatures? Similarly, is there a reason that almost every exchange control effect requires that the permanents share a card type?

It’s a safety valve for play balance.

Charitable Honor

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your father, Mark. Is there a cause he cared about that interested Question Marks could donate to in his honor?

He suffered from Alzheimer’s which is truly a horrible condition. My dad would have been appreciative of anyone donating to a group connected to Alzheimer’s, especially one working on finding medical solutions to it.

Donate Ability Colors

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by vaingloryhunter 34 Comments

Hi Mark - If/When more spells or creatures that donate other permanents (like Harmless Offering) in Red and Black? It's obviously a pretty niche thing, but my poor guy Blim is having to carry so much weight at the moment with only about three other cards that help.

The Donate ability is blue and red, so I don’t expect black to do a lot in that area. We don’t do a lot of it overall because it makes it harder to create creatures with drawbacks.

Defining Donate

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by hanavesinauttija 15 Comments

Re: “Donating” means giving control of a card/permanent you own to another player. When a player other than Elusen's owner gives control of Elusen to the next player, does the donate ability then not trigger?

I guess we could define “donate” as giving control of a card you control to another player.

Sticker Mechanics Rules

New 12 Aug 2022 Asked by gevth 65 Comments

Ok, so hear me out:

1) My opponent controls a Wicker Picker.

2) I use Mindslaver to control their next turn.

3) In this turn, I play a creature from their hand, and I use Wicker Picker’s sticker kicker.

Since I am in control of my opponent’s turn, can I put a sticker on the Sticker-kicked creature?

Does the answer change if I used “Donate” to give them my Wicker Picker in the first place?

(Also, one thing I’ve realized from past answers is that if my opponent doesn’t want a sticker glued on their card, we can use a counter. I can’t force them to use stickers with real glue).

You cannot. Same with Donate. There are no cards currently in the game of Magic that change ownership of cards (well, except ante cards, but those haven’t been a thing in a long, long time and they are banned in every format).EDIT: Some further clarification. Built into the sticker rules is you have to voluntarily choose to put a sticker on a card. Nothing in the game can force you to sticker something if you don’t want to sticker it.EDIT #2: Checking into this, I gave a slightly incorrect answer. If you Mindslaver your opponent, you can force them to sticker cards they own, but you can’t literally force them to put a sticker on it. The player may choose instead to represent it with paper and pencil.

Donate and Exchange-control Effects

New 06 Feb 2022 Asked by j-waffles 60 Comments

Donate and exchange-control effects seem like they make the most sense in white (being nice) and black (uneven trades for power). But the vast majority of them are in blue and red. Would you mind explaining this?

Blue and red are the two tricky colors and it’s flavored as being tricky.

Ceiling of Control Donation

Follow up to my Donate question, I hadn't heard of Harmless Offering before; what colors can give away their own permanents?

Blue and red, the main colors of stealing, can also give away control.

Reasons for Donating Permanents

New 29 Apr 2021 Asked by titania776 23 Comments

Under what circumstances does a design team put cards in a set that donate your own permanents to your opponents? Donating never seems to be a main theme in a set. So that leads the one off cards like Donate and Bazaar Trader seems weird in there respective sets.

It’s not an effect we want in volume, so it doesn’t lend itself well to a theme.

Appreciation to Wizards

New 25 Oct 2020 Asked by mangofisher74 47 Comments

Not a question but a thank you to you and Wizards. While the movie studios commit suicide by not releasing product and running their distributors out of business, what did Wizards do - donate 200 dollar booster boxes of an awesome set to help keep the LGSs afloat. A very very sincere thank you from an appreciative customer of both Wizards and LGSs.

You’re welcome.

Bronze Statue Donation Possibility

New 07 Jun 2020 Asked by curdbros-blog 38 Comments

If the players were willing to donate to making a bronze statue of you to place outside of the WOTC headquarters would that be something you are interested in? I think this idea is a must.

There are actually hundreds of people that make Magic happen. I’m not sure there’s enough space for that many statues. : )

It’s not something we do often because it’s a thing best served in small doses.

Heya Mark. There is a raffle going on by #MTG4BOS, to raise money to help out in Boston. While the raffle is giving away magic prizes, I am wondering if you can let others know about this? I think it would be good as I am sure that others on your blog would be willing to help donate some money to help out in raising money for boston?

Can someone reply in the notes with a link?
