Demonic Tutor

Limited Format Satisfaction

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by justletmereadmyoldblog 28 Comments

Hey Mark, as a limited main I wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of the kinds of cards that we've been getting lately that let us play with all time high power-level effects brought down to a fair level for limited. MKM had a fair Control Magic. OTJ has several, including references to Demonic Tutor, Ray of Command, and Snapcaster, all at uncommon. It's exciting to get to play with classic effects in a way that doesn't disrupt the balance. I'm the most eager to draft I've been since MOM!

It’s an area we’ve been enjoying exploring recently.

Tutor Cards Color

Why are any-card tutors black? Seems like they would be blue.

It’s a carry over from Demonic Tutor being in Alpha.

Simple Effects in FIRE

New 19 May 2023 Asked by attracte 49 Comments

Hey Mark, mono-green has never had a simple demonic tutor but for creatures. Are simple (boring) effects like that not as likely under FIRE design?

It’s the kind of effect we’ll make one day. There are a surprisingly number of simple effects we haven’t done yet. There are just lots and lots of potential card designs.None of this has anything to do with FIRE design.

Against Tribal Errata

New 19 Apr 2023 Asked by mysticleviathan 40 Comments

I wish you’d bring back tribal and errata older cards. Make the criteria simple: If the name kf the card has a creature type’s name in it, eg Goblin Grenade, Dragon Arch, Demonic Tutor, or if the card mechanically cares about the creature type, eg The Hive should be Insect tribal, Whirlermaker should be Servo tribal, Raise the Alarm should be soldier tribal. You guys did a giant creature type update in the past so mass erata isn’t foreign territory.

It adds a lot of words on cards for minimal mechanical relevance.

Suggesting Color Pie Article

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by derplingvonderp 29 Comments

Suggestion for article/dtw: The inertia in the color pie or design in general caused by e.g. demonic tutor and times it was broken e.g. psionic blast

I’ll add it to the short list. : )

Misconceptions about Green's Abilities

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by natew000 39 Comments

Considering that Regrowth is mechanically able to get card types that green usually doesn’t care about, it seems to me that without the flavor of the card Regrowth, the effect might be only allowed in multicolor that same way that Vindicate is a multicolor effect. I could imagine a world where both Regrowth and Demonic Tutor were only allowed in multicolor in modern Magic.

There seems to be this misunderstanding that green doesn’t get interact with various card types. Every color interacts with all the card types in their own way. One of those ways for green is through the graveyard. Green is the scavenging color.

Historicity of Regrowth Effects

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by cicakemlelo 29 Comments

I had been wondering about the Demonic Tutor thing! And a related one: would regrowth effects have been green if it hadn't been for Regrowth itself?

Still green. Regrowth, as a concept, is very green.

Black and Universal Tutoring

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by mysticleviathan 62 Comments

If I recall correctly, you've said that the only reason black is the color for tutoring of any card is the original Demonic Tutor and the inertia it caused. If universal tutoring weren't in black, what color do you think it would be in?

Blue.

Hypothetical Demonic Tutor Drawbacks

New 10 Jan 2021 Asked by lanz37 47 Comments

What kind of drawbacks would be necessary to print a demonic tutor in today's magic (assuming the cmc stays 2, and it tutors for any card to the hand)? Is paying life enough of a cost? Maybe exiling cards from your hand?

It’s hard to balance it with life as you start with the life. It would probably have to be a resource you have to build up over time. For example, I could imagine exiling a certain number of cards from your graveyard.

Logic Behind Monoblack Tutoring

New 19 May 2020 Asked by breawycker 49 Comments

Why is monoblack the color for tutoring then?

Richard wanted a card called demonic tutor and that felt black. It tutored for a card because that‘s what demonic tutor would do. In retrospect, it be nice if it had a small life payment.

Tutors vs Companions

New 12 May 2020 Asked by alphedge 46 Comments

If you don't like printing tutors because create repetitive gameplay, why did you print companions which essentially demonic tutor themselves into your hand every game creating even more repetitive gameplay.

I agree that they share repetition of gameplay concerns. They don’t have the tool box issue (they can get the specific thing you need when you need it) or the duplication issue (let’s you essentially play more than four copies). The thought at the time was the deck restrictions would be enough to limit how many decks could play them.

Black's Tutoring Origin

New 04 Dec 2019 Asked by jackpotpie 46 Comments

Why is black the color of tutoring?

It got grandfathered in from Alpha. I believe it was a top down design for Demonic Tutor.

Panglacial Wurm Rules

New 31 Jul 2019 Asked by gabecampos89 48 Comments

Why can't the rules handle Panglacial wurm? It seems so intuitive and easy to grok for me. Crack a fetch? You can play the wurm. Demonic tutor? Land Tax? Battalion foot soldier? Cast wurm.

There is a difference between what players can understand and what the rules can handle. Silver border is full of cards that fall in this category.

Tutoring's Color Pie

If tutoring for anything hadn't been grandfathered into black by Demonic Tutor, would it have ended up in blue's color pie?

Probably.

Card Balance Views

New 30 Sep 2018 Asked by starlightofpenguins 27 Comments

How do you feel about Demonic Consultation and Jeweled Amulet? I feel like the Ice Age team actually did a really good job there in making balanced yet strong Demonic Tutor and Mox variants.

I think the designs were cool, but suffered from not enough development. Demonic Consultation was too strong and Jeweled Amulet needed a clearer template as it confused too many players.

Equipment Tutoring

New 05 Sep 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 36 Comments

Equipment matters, including equipment tutoring, is generally a red and/or white thing rather than blue. But now blue is allowed to do it because equipment tutoring is a subset of artifact tutoring, which blue can do. So if blue can tutor equipment now, does that mean that things like black tutoring specific card types (a subset of Demonic Tutor effects) and green recurring specific card types other than creatures/lands (a subset of Regrowth effects) are potential options in the right set?

Yes. More so green than black as black’s tutoring is being used less.

Color Pie Principles

New 17 Aug 2017 Asked by deeathblade-blog 50 Comments

I feel your points on mr-obliterator's ask are valid, but doesn't having overcosted/bad downside enable colors to still have their weaknesses and bended color pie cards? I'd posit that Desert Twister is fine but Song of the Dryads isn't since DT is prohibitively expensive, or Gamble not breaking red since it's downside doesn't make it Demonic tutor but in red.

Dessert Twister is out of color pie. If you want a weak way to do something in a monocolor deck, go to artifacts. That’s part of why they exist.

Black Mana Card Drawing

New 02 Mar 2017 Asked by iamhighwayman 21 Comments

"Black is only supposed to get cards when an additional payment is paid, most often life." ... this has always been my understanding too, and (by extension) the reason I've never been particularly fond of Diabolic/Demonic Tutor being a black spell, but totally okay with Grim/Cruel/Vampiric Tutor.

By “get cards” I meant “draw cards”. Black can tutor as long it isn’t going up in cards.

Planar Chaos Premise

New 23 Apr 2016 Asked by codenamejd 30 Comments

So if we were to see another Planar Chaos situation, we might get cards like a black Control Magic and a blue Demonic Tutor (ok, probably Demonic)?

I have some bad news about your premise…

Color Pie Philosophy

New 16 Mar 2016 Asked by ricardolongo 17 Comments

"If you can deal with the larger group, you could [deal with] a subset." But should you? Should black, the color of Demonic Tutor, be able to get Idyllic Tutor? I don't think so, especially because dealing with a subset often comes with other advantages, such as cost reduction, and helps you guys craft better-defined for each color.

I was talking about color bend versus color break. Just because you do a larger subset, doesn’t mean you get to do any subset normally.
