Cryptic Spires Timeline

Was Crypitic Spires made before or after the decision for Unifinity to go acorn?

I don’t know the timeline of Cryptic Spires. My guess is before.

Signing Autograph Books

What writing utensil do you recommend for signing Autograph Book or circling Cryptic Spires to prevent indentations creating a marked card?

Thin Sharpies are good.

Attractions Strategy

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by raytyger 19 Comments

Are the different lights in the same attractions sort of a deckbuilding choice, like with Cryptic Spires, but pre-backed into the card and less wordy?

It is a decision you get to make. You can bunch up your triggers or spread them out.

Cards as Bookmarks

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by titania776 85 Comments

You once said that a true waste of a card isn’t the one that people complain about its the ones that people just forget about. That really stuck with me because there are so many fun cards that i have played with but don’t really have any use for. So whenever i fall in love with a card i now sleeve it and use them as book marks. Some of my favorites are cryptic spires, the prismatic piper, lost auramacers and keeper of the lens. In a weird way it has provided an extra layer of joy to my reading because now when i open my book i am reminded of my favorite game with a card that fell throw the cracks in one way or another.

Thanks for sharing.

Booster Tutor Rules

New 15 Aug 2022 Asked by osmiumtrioxide 43 Comments

I know we're all on unfinity now, but I have an Unhinged/Unsanctioned question: If I Booster Tutor a pack of Double Masters 2022, add the Cryptic Spires to my hand, then play it, what mana can I add? Is there any point at which I can circle mana symbols on the Cryptic Spires?

You circle the mana when it enters the game.

Stickers and Cryptic Spires

New 30 Jul 2022 Asked by lantern-armory 33 Comments

Since Cryptic Spires and stickers were close together in the timeline, was it ever considered to use stickers on Cryptic Spires' color indicators?

Stickers require a big investment in the booster pack as you have to have a sticker sheet.

Out-of-Game Actions Comparison

New 24 Jul 2022 Asked by followingthemagic 39 Comments

I’m excited for Unfinity, but I feel stickers in eternal formats do “out of game” actions we’ve never seen before, similar to cryptic spires but more intense. Is this a direction we’re heading in, or are these two “out of game” examples just happen to be seen very close to each other?

How are these different than a counter?

Cryptic Spires Card in a Casual Game

New 11 Jul 2022 Asked by pontemosca 38 Comments

Hi Maro, about the Cryptic Spires anecdote. If this was a casual draft (in a store or a friends house) you can change the colors chosen with it. If you alredy marked it, you could use a piece of paper or a stronger and clear mark.

Yes, in casual play, players should feel free to change the colors on it between games.

Cryptic Spires in Draft

New 11 Jul 2022 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 33 Comments

You mentioned in an answer that there weren't really any roadblocks for getting Cryptic Spires printed. However, in another answer, you said the team that designed it intended for it to be used in most draft environments, but you all decided against that. If there weren't any roadblocks, what was the reasoning for not using Cryptic Spires more frequently?

It was decided to be the wrong thing to do as a general fix for drafts. When Double Masters 2022 was looking for a mana fix, they looked to that idea. There were no roadblocks to using it in Double Masters 2022.

The Birth of Cryptic Spires

New 11 Jul 2022 Asked by finneyflame-deactivated20221118 40 Comments

Cryptic Spires is such a fun and innovative design, but one that breaks from Magic tradition. It seems like its a product of the recent breaks from the formula for mechanics. At what point did something like Cryptic Spires becomes reasonable for black-border Magic? (I'm glad it did BTW)

Interestingly, it was first created by a team that was looking for ways to improve drafts. The idea was this would be a tool offered in small number to every draft. We ended up deciding against it, but the idea was there when Double Masters 2022 was looking to solve their mana issues.

It didn’t face any real roadblock.

Experience with Cryptic Spires

New 10 Jul 2022 Asked by theothin 44 Comments

Hi Mark! I played a 2X2 draft today, I mostly enjoyed it but found Cryptic Spires frustrating. I used my Spires to splash red but ended up cutting the red splash after the first round, but by then I could no longer use them for my remaining colors. Wanted to pass on this story to express my hope that future sets trying to support multicolor draft will find different methods and avoid having players modify their cards.

I find that when I play a format and I learn a lot in my first time playing that I can apply to later times playing that it’s an exciting thing. It means I have much to learn about the format. Cryptic Spires’s design allows you to do things differently next time, so you don’t have a repeat of this mistake. I think that’s good design, not bad.

Drafting Experience After Lockdown

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by mrmoustachemm 21 Comments

Last night I went to my first in-store draft since March 2020. I've really missed doing that, and I'm really happy it was a 2X2 draft. People had all sorts of cool decks doing really fun things! The higher power level was great, Cryptic Spires worked perfectly, and everyone had a great time! I even got 1st place with a GBU graveyard deck that played differently each time, but always got value when I needed it to. High fives all around for this set!

High fives will be deployed. Thanks for sharing the story.

Cryptic Spires and Perpetual Draft

New 20 Jun 2022 Asked by tybonel13 28 Comments

Hey Mark! Since Cryptic Spires sets precedent for writing on cards in draft, could perpetually work as a draft mechanic with writing?

I think people need to think of Cryptic Spheres much as they think of checklist cards. It’s a tool to enable gameplay.

Cryptic Spires and Deck Building

New 18 Jun 2022 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 45 Comments

Cryptic Spires seems to open the magic rules to a theseus’s ship kind of discussion for “what is deck building”. If I swap out one card, does that count as building a deck? I assume the rules will clearly define what it means in this context, I just find it funny

In a tournament, it’s when you turn your deck list in.

In limited yes, assuming you drafted them. In constructed, no. You are limited to the cap of the format.

Cryptic Spires Comparison

New 18 Jun 2022 Asked by caitsith4 37 Comments

Re: Cryptic Spires. It feels a little disingenuous to start comparing a common tapland (less powerful than a guildgate) with similar rarity to a basic land to Chaos Confetti, etc. Can we limit handwringing about the subject to maybe cool feedback that takes the facts into account, maybe just this once? It feels like people are just trying to troll you sometimes.

Some players are trying to troll me every day. : )

Cryptic Spires Template

New 17 Jun 2022 Asked by annorax 52 Comments

Why was Cryptic Spires templated as "mark on the card (and possibly render it marked with a ballpoint pen" and not "before starting the game, note two colors"? Conspiracy 2 had several cards that had players note things before the game started & they weren't problematic in any way.

Because you might have multiple in your deck with different choices.
