Cosmic Horror Typing Considerations

Was there ever any consideration to re-type Cosmic Horror as an Eldrazi?

Not that I know of.

Future of Annihilator in Sets

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 0 Comments

Hi Mark - at some point, I assume we will see the Eldrazi in a non-supplemental set again. I would like to ask very nicely that when it happens, it isn't alongside annihilator, please. I thinks the Eldrazi are visually really cool and I like the inscrutable cosmic horror side of them but annihilator is probably the mechanic I like least in all of mtg's history. I hate playing against it and I feel guilty if I play with it myself.

I do not expect us to bring annihilator back to premier sets.

Set Design Preferences

New 21 Nov 2023 Asked by cassiesuccubus 42 Comments

Hi Mark. Can I ask for more return set like Shadows of Innistrad and Lost Cavern of Ixalan, which adds one big new element that makes the set it's own thing (a shift to cosmic horror, going underground), and less like Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow or Zendikar Rising, which are just "here's more of the 1st set"?

We do a mix because there are people that like each. So yes, we’ll do more of the thing you like, but no, we won’t stop doing the thing you don’t like.

UB Product Similarity

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by cassiesuccubus 28 Comments

Hi Mark. I was curious - would the fact that Magic already has a very similar setting or product help or hinder a UB product? For example, would the existence of Shadows of Innistrad and Eldritch Moon be a factor when evaluating a potential UB product based on a certain literary cosmic horror IP that pioneered the genre?

We’d do a Universes Beyond property even if Magic already did our take on the genre. At least, that won’t be the thing that stops us.

Horror Set Dilemmas

New 06 Aug 2023 Asked by ramisirote 90 Comments

RnD: "lets make a cosmic horror set! We have Innistrad as a horror plane so we'll just set it there" Players: "This is too different and should have been another plane" RnD: " lets do a modern horror set, but not set it on Innistrad this time, since the horror trope is different" Players: "Why isnt it set on Innistrad???"

Welcome to my world. : )

Modern Horror vs Gothic

New 06 Aug 2023 Asked by tporter222 73 Comments

Hi Mark, you said: "Modern horror can’t be done in Innistrad". Not that I mind that Duskmourn is set on its own plane (in fact I prefer it and think it sounds much more compelling), but you've strayed from the Gothic horror theme of Innistrad into cosmic horror before with the SOI block after having a plane-wide change. It seems like you could've similarly had the Phyrexian invasion or the omenpaths make a similar change to make the modern horror theme viable there for a backdrop set.

Cosmic horror has significantly more overlap with gothic horror than modern horror does. For example, you need the modern part.

Theme vs Plane Origin

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by chairborne33 53 Comments

In your podcast you mentioned Eldritch Moon WotC had an idea for a theme (cosmic horror) and chose Innistrad as a plane with horror theme to execute it in. As a lesson learned you said that may not have been a good idea to drift from Innistrad's core gothic horror theme because players had an attachment to Innistrad's flavor. We are returning to Ixalan and Eldraine this year and I was wondering if the theme was chosen first and WotC found planes to fit them or were the planes chosen first?

Wilds of Eldraine - started with return to Eldraine.Lost Caverns of Ixalan - started with underground world (original plan was new world).

Genre Expansion Appreciation

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 102 Comments

Just wanna say I appreciate Magic branching out from high fantasy into other genres and tropes. Tolkein/DND/etc is a rich and resonant space, but magic feels so much bigger now and I like it. Steampunk, cyberpunk, sci-fi, retro sci-fi, Gothic and cosmic horror ... truly a genre-breaking (and -bending!) Game.

I’m glad you enjoy it. How do others feel about us pushing into other genres?

Cosmic Horror Settings

New 27 Dec 2022 Asked by bdiasf 39 Comments

What is more likely: cosmic horror on Innistrad or a brand New cosmic horror plane? (Maybe Tolvada idk, the sky is opening there, people are getting crazy)

Shadows over Innistrad block was cosmic horror.

Cosmic Horror Themes

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by jellobrand 40 Comments

Hello Mark, I was looking through all the ravnica blocks and just wanted to comend you (especially on original ravnica) for the wonderful design work! Totally irrelevant to my question though, which is: Is cosmic horror something that would be revisited, or was Eldritch Moon a more one time visit to the genre?

Thank you for the kind words.I don’t expect Innistrad to do cosmic horror again, but I never say never. I do expect us to do other sets with horror themes that aren’t on Innistrad (it’s a deep genre), and one of those might touch upon cosmic horror.

Potential Shift to Noir Theme

New 19 Apr 2022 Asked by cairnwanderer 56 Comments

So could we shift to Noir on a return to New Capenna, like how we did Cosmic Horror when we returned to Innistrad?

It’s a possibility.

Blind Eternities as a Location

New 12 Nov 2021 Asked by windsweptheath 54 Comments

So we all know the Blind Eternities aren't a place, and we can never go there... but have you ever wondered, with the interest you've seen on blogatog or elsewhere, whether the creative team could be tempted to ret-con it into more of a *place* that you could build a set around? Emphasis on the cosmic of cosmic horror?

Magic worlds need two things that even a retconned Blind Eternities would have trouble with - supporting biomes for all five colors and resonance.

Innistrad's Return to Gothic Horror

New 07 Aug 2021 Asked by french-onion-firbolg 58 Comments

"Does magic have to be on Innistrad to explore a horror genre?"
"No. I assume it would be a different sub genre of horror than gothic horror though.I thought Innistrad was now cosmic horror, as Emrakul's influence is still around? Was that just a twist for Eldritch Moon? How much body horror stuff should I be prepared for as we head back to Innistrad?

Innistrad is back to gothic horror and away from cosmic horror.

Innistrad's Cosmic Horror

New 24 Apr 2021 Asked by theblocknessmonster 51 Comments

I started playing Magic around Shadows over Innistrad/Eldritch Moon, and I have a very deep love for the cosmic horror aspect of some of that time in Innistrad history. Can I get a maybe on some spooky remnants of Emrakul's presence there?

It’s mostly gothic horror.

Return to Innistrad

New 31 May 2020 Asked by vaguelyahuman 47 Comments

In a hypothetical return to innistrad, do you think it would continue to be portrayed as cosmic horror or could it return entirely to gothic horror? Some of my playgroup mourns the innistrad we had in the original block and I was curious if it could return or if that interpretation is gone for good. Thanks!

I assume a return to Innistrad would be a return to gothic horror.

Eldrazi Media Mention

New 08 Oct 2019 Asked by tropicalscream 60 Comments

Here's an MtG reference in Media: The YouTube channel "Top 5 Scary Videos" had a video if "Top 5 Scariest Cosmic Horror Monsters (in media) and The Eldrazi were listed at # 5 and talked on how cool/creepy they are!

Cool. Thanks for sharing.

Fable Set Possibility

New 14 Sep 2019 Asked by cairnwanderer 23 Comments

Wouldn't a "Fable" set still be set on Eldraine though, just a return-to a-la Innistrad's Cosmic Horror return?

We made choices that wouldn’t make fable work on Eldraine.

Cosmic Horror Themes

New 08 Sep 2019 Asked by bordergeist 101 Comments

Given the response to the Eldrazi in later Zendikar and Innistrad, does that mean that we are unlikely to see another cosmic horror themed set?

I think the cosmic horror of Shadow over Innistrad was generally positive and would have been even more so if we’d put some space between Battle for Zendikar and it as there was Eldrazzi fatigue.

Innistrad Returning Theme

New 29 May 2018 Asked by tevans-living-life 84 Comments

Is Innistrad a Cosmic horror plane now, or will it return to Gothic horror themes now that Emrakul is trapped in the silver moon?

Innistrad’s cosmic horror-ness faded when Emrakul was trapped in the moon.

Creative Direction Praise

New 12 Jul 2017 Asked by mrtitanic 102 Comments

I really have to say, Creative has been knocking it out of the park since original Innistrad - especially Theros and everything since Magic Origins. The origin stories (especially Jace) were brilliant, the cosmic horror of Innistrad, a few parts of Zendikar and especially Amonkhet have been phenomenal. Creative is getting better and better.

I agree.
